Diabetes Coaching From Cdes Living With Type 1 Diabetes!

Diabetes Coaching from CDEs Living with Type 1 Diabetes! If your endocrinologist or diabetes team often makes arbitrary adjustments to your basal rates and meal doses based on a print-out from your glucose meter, without taking the time to properly test those doses, then it may be time to look a little further for diabetes coaching support. If youve ever found yourself frustratedly trying to communicate with your non-diabetic Endocrinology office, youre not alone. Maybe you were told you cant run marathons because you have diabetes now, oryoure being asked base questions about carb-counting when your insulin doses actually need fine-tuning. Maybe youre tired of the glucose meter print-out where your Endo circles all the high or low numbers and asks, So, what happened here? even though it was two months ago and youre wondering if you were supposed to come in with perfect, non-diabetic-like numbers on your meter. Or maybe when you explain the high number as, Well, I really struggle with dosing for high-fat meals like pizza and Mexican food, and their only response is to lecture you on how you shouldnt eat foods like pizza. Things like that are frustrating, and theyre often result of a medical professional whodoesntlive with diabetes struggling to really understand what a day in our shoes is really like and just how many variables and obstacles we face every day that impact our blood sugars and insulin needs. Fortunately, Integrated Diabetes Services with Gary Scheiner, MS, CDE (author of Think Like a Pancreas ) and his team of other CDEs actuallylive with diabetes themselves! So the chances of being told to never eat Mexican food again is pretty sliminstead, Gary and his team will actually help you learn how to dose insulin more effectively around those kinds of situation Continue reading >>

My Month With A Diabetes Coach

My Month With A Diabetes Coach

I never thought I needed a life coach or health coach, but while writing last month's post on diabetes coaches, friend and fellow PWD Ginger Vieira kindly offered me a one-month trial to experience what it's really like working with one. Intrigued, I decided to take her up on her offer. For the past four weeks, I've been having calls with Ginger once a week and exchanging occasional text messages, to take a look at the challenges I have in managing my diabetes and to brainstorm some solutions for what I can do differently. We just completed our fourth (and for now, last) call and while I haven't lost more than a couple of pounds, I definitely have a renewed "I can do this!" attitude toward my diabetes. I shook up my diabetes management this past Spring when I switched from the pump to Lantus (yep, I'm still on a pump vacation), but I hadn't spent much time thinking about the other areas of my life that affect my diabetes. That's where Ginger came in. When Ginger and I hopped on the phone for our first session, she and I walked through various areas of my life that might need work: relationships, spirituality, exercise, nutrition, career and finance. Note that not all of these are necessarily diabetes-related. Ginger says, "It helps us both become aware of what areas of life we want to focus on. Some people come to me knowing exactly what they want. Others can't quite put into words what they're really after or haven't thought of the connection between unhealthy relationships and abusing themselves with food, for example." Here's what I laid out for Ginger on our first call: I'm already in counseling for some other mental health issues — but none of them are health/weight/food related. Even without the diabetes, I'm hardly the picture of perfect health. I rarely exerci Continue reading >>

Evaluating The Effect Of A Diabetes Health Coach In Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes.

Evaluating The Effect Of A Diabetes Health Coach In Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes.

Abstract OBJECTIVES: Diabetes health coaching has not been adequately assessed in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The objective of this review was to synthesize the evidence of health coaching for individuals with diabetes to determine the effects of coaching on diabetes control, specifically on glycated hemoglobin (A1C) levels. METHODS: The EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychINFO and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases were searched from inception to January 2015. Reference lists from important publications were also reviewed. At least 2 evaluators independently screened and extracted data from eligible studies. RESULTS: A total of 8 trials met the selection criteria, which included 724 adult participants; 353 participants were randomized to a diabetes health coaching intervention, and 371 were randomized to usual care. The pooled effect of diabetes health coaching overall was a statistically significant reduction of A1C levels by 0.32 (95% CI, -0.50 to -0.15). Longer diabetes health coaching exposure (>6 months) resulted in a 0.57% reduction in A1C levels (95% CI, -0.76 to -0.38), compared to shorter diabetes health coaching exposure (≤6 months) (-0.23%; 95% CI, -0.37 to -0.09). Across all studies, diabetes health coaching consisted of goal setting, knowledge acquisition, individualized care and frequent follow up. CONCLUSIONS: Diabetes health coaching has an emerging role in healthcare that facilitates self-care, behaviour change and offers frequent follow up and support. This review finds that health coaching for those with diabetes is an effective intervention for improving glycemic control, which may be of greater benefit when offered in addition to existing diabetes care. How Living With Type 1 Diabetes Helped Wellness Coach Lauren Bongiorno Find Her Life's Purpose

How Living With Type 1 Diabetes Helped Wellness Coach Lauren Bongiorno Find Her Life's Purpose

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) at age seven. For those of you who arent familiar with what this means exactly: T1D is a chronic autoimmune disease that occurs when the bodys immune system attacks the beta cells that produce insulin, a hormone that is a necessary to live. From the moment of diagnosis until this moment in my life, living with type 1 diabetes has brought me three things: 1.Thechallenges that come with living with a disease that (currently) has no cure,2.A slew of obsessive, perfectionistic tendencies, 3. Adoorway to my lifes purpose. I wasnt the most unhealthy child for the first eleven years of living with T1D (around the ages of seven to eighteen), but kale definitely wasnt in my vocabulary either. I played soccer competitively, and I ate a pretty standard American diet: Pizza, pasta, side salads, chicken parmesan, cups of noodles, fries, butter-y popcorn at the movies with friends, cake at parties you know the deal. At the same time that I was just trying to be a normal kid/teen, I was dealing with all the challenges that came with diabetes. It was a constant battle to keep my blood sugar in a range of 80-120, a range thatis considered healthy, and affected by everything under the sun, from stress to sickness to activity level to type of food to timing of meals to insulin dosages. I was scared from hearing stories of people going to bed and sinking into a diabetic coma and not waking up, and, with my blood sugar numbers always up and down, I felt like I got hit by a bus half the time. The story of my health journey starts when I went off to college. Away from home for the first time, playing Division 1 soccer, leaving all my friends and family behind, I became very unsure of who Lauren was as a person. When you havediabetes, you see a numbe Continue reading >>

One Mind. One Body. One Chance.

One Mind. One Body. One Chance.

I’ve worked with endocrinologists, GPs, clinical psychologists, diabetes nurses, nutritionists and naturopaths. They’ve all prescribed various courses of treatment, but offered little support and understanding of the underlying issues that have been preventing me from succeeding. I went to Lauren with an A1C of 8.5% and after my first consultation with her, I knew this programme was going to be different. She has this energy that is just magnetic, she isn’t judgmental about management in the past - she motivates, educates and inspires. Within the first few weeks of working with Lauren, I was already seeing more steady blood sugar numbers and when I was seeing numbers outside of the optimal range, I was learning more about why that was happening and deconstructing the mindset I had of associating insulin and good diabetes management with weight gain. In three months, my A1C was down to a 7.4 and i'm feeling less like a victim of diabetes, and more like the victor. Lauren Bongiorno has been a Type 1 Diabetic for 16 years and is a Diabetic Health Coach, Yoga Instructor, Nike influencer, and Wellness Speaker. After receiving her health coaching certification through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Lauren started working with type 1, type 2 and pre-diabetics to take back control of their lives through creating healthy diet and exercise habits that best fit their lifestyle. Her clients learn the tools they need to lower their A1C, get control of their blood sugar levels, increase their insulin sensitivity, lose weight, feel energized and stick to a healthy diet and workout plan to reach their goals. “Lauren’s suggestions and support have helped me lower my A1C from 9.3 to 7.3 in 12 short weeks!“ Many clients experience these benefits while working with La Continue reading >>

As a type 1 diabetic, I admit I was often afraid to go to the gym because I was afraid of going hypoglycemic. Christel really helped me learn how to manage my sugars, giving me the confidence I needed to get back to the gym on a regular basis. Christel gave me a workout and meal plan that was tailored to my specific likes and dislikes. The workouts are challenging (but not so hard I cant do them) and the meals are structured, but flexible enough that I was able to have some variety. I definitely got results! Christel was always willing to answer questions and change up meals when I asked. Id recommend online personal training with Christel to anyone! Working with Christel was amazing! My greatest take-away from 3 months of training with her was learning how to eat before and after a workout to help control my blood sugars. Before working with her, i always struggled to workout hard because my blood sugar would always be either low or high. I also never did weightlifting because i didnt know where Continue reading >>

What A Diabetic Health Coach Eats In A Day

What A Diabetic Health Coach Eats In A Day

What A Diabetic Health Coach Eats In A Day Over the past three years, my relationship with food has significantly improved. I am no longer afraid of carbs, I no longer binge eat at night, I no longer live to eat, but rather eat to live, and I no longer use food to feed my emotions. And the best part my blood sugars have never been better. I always struggled with what the right diet to manage my diabetes was until I adapted the bio individuality approach. This approach means that there is no one right diet that works for everyone and we all must move towards what makes us feel nutritionally supported, energized, and in control of our blood sugar numbers. That being said, I do believe that regardless of whether you decide to eat high fat, high carb, animal products, or not, the bulk of all of our diets should be whole, unprocessed foods. Through trial and error Ive learned what works for my body. I do not eat meat or dairy and I eat a high carb, low fat diet. Last week I tracked everything I ate for one day and wanted to share it with you today! 7:15 am: I woke up with a fasted blood sugar of 100. Perfect start to the day! Before breakfast I drank 1 warm cup of water with lemon to kick start digestion and hydrate the body. 8:00 am: Breakfast time! Today I was in the mood for some Blueberry Pancakes. I blended up 1/3 cup oats, 1/3 cup egg whites, tsp baking soda, 1 tsp vanilla extract, mashed banana. After that I folded 1/2 cup blueberries into the batter before cooking them on a heated skillet. This is a totally guilt free recipe. 10:15 am: My body works best when I eat small meals every 2-3 hours. Today my mid-morning snack was 1 pink lady apple + 4 celery stalks. 1:00 pm: After one hour of cardio and weight training I ate a post workout lunch that had a balance of heal Continue reading >>

Decide And Conquer: From Diagnosis At 7 To Diabetic Health Coach Today

I was 7 years old on November 1 when I was newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. In a matter of minutes I went from living a carefree childhood running around on the soccer field, swimming at the beach, and sleeping over friend’s houses without a worry on my mind, to laying in a hospital bed forced to grow up faster than most kids. Yet, although we can all agree that living with diabetes is no walk in the park, I wake up everyday with a grateful heart. Not only because diabetes has made me a stronger person mentally and emotionally, but also because it has given me the opportunity to help other people with diabetes conquer the relentless day-to-day challenges that this disease poses as well. Today I am a Diabetic Health Coach, Yoga Instructor, Boot camp Instructor, Institute for Integrative Nutrition graduate, and the Co-Creator of the Keep Healthy Inc. Low Glycemic snack bars — the only low glycemic bar on the market that does not contain any sugar alcohols or other artificial ingredients. My journey to where I am today, as an advocate for strengthening both mind and body to conquer your challenges — whatever they may be — largely stems from overcoming an unhealthy obsession I used to have around controlling my diabetes, food and exercise. My senior year of high school I was recruited to play Division 1 soccer at UNCW and had worked my butt off in the years prior to reach that goal. My freshman year I played in the fall season, but mid-way into spring season I made the decision to stop playing. I wasn’t getting the full “college experience” I desired, wasn’t bonding with my teammates the way I had in the past and realized the only reason I was staying on the team was because I didn’t want to let my parents, friends, and coaches down. When I decided to Continue reading >>

Live your most active life with type 1 diabetes Introducing a 16-week nutrition and fitness group coaching program that can transform your relationship with food, significantly increase your performance and recovery and give you the best blood sugar control you’ve ever had. If you are like most people with type 1 diabetes, then controlling your blood sugar can be a complete mystery. Even if you eat the same foods on a daily basis, your blood sugar responds differently, leaving you feeling frustrated and out of control. The truth is, your blood sugar responds to many environmental factors, and getting a handle on exactly what causes your blood sugar to rise and fall can be completely overwhelming... “Receiving real-time evidence-based fitness and diet coaching was invaluable because the experience allowed me to attain insights that left me feeling supported and generating better results than I had from simply working with my doctor and dietician. This coaching program is customized and offered by a coach living with type 1 diabetes, and that truly distinguishes this program from the rest.” “This program has helped a lot with my base level of anxiety. I’ve always wanted to exercise again, but was worried about hurting myself. Now, I have a plan in place that helps prevent lows and deal with them confidently if they happen. I went from being too tired to go for a walk to craving exercise—I get restless if I skip a day.” “Within three days of starting the first steps of this program, I could immediately feel a difference in my energy levels. Within 3 weeks, I had decreased my daily insulin requirement by 50% and for the first time in two years was able to complete a two hour endurance ride without being limited by a significant hypoglycemic episode.” David Continue reading >>
