National Diabetes Awareness Month And World Diabetes Day

National Diabetes Awareness Month And World Diabetes Day

This November, we invite the Type 1 Diabetes community to join us in recognition of National Diabetes Awareness Month (NDAM), a program focused on raising widespread awareness and action on behalf of millions of Americans living with the disease. Every year, NDAM unites supporters across the country through a variety of events and campaigns, with the mission of focusing attention on crucial issues associated with diabetes. This national event is an essential chance for individuals to make their voices heard; it provides a multitude of opportunities to promote public understanding of diabetes and progress toward the vital necessity of a cure. Locally, to help generate greater awareness, Dos Coyotes restaurants throughout northern and central California will be adding NDAM information on their order number table placards. Each card will include the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, as well as contact information for the local JDRF office. We offer our thanks to owner Bobby Coyote and executive chef Mark Casale for making this opportunity available. On November 14, we will celebrate World Diabetes Day (WDD), a large-scale campaign with the mission of “taking coordinated and concerted actions to confront diabetes as a critical global health issue”. Since 1991, WDD has served as a force of information and activism for an international audience, unifying billions of diabetic individuals through a variety of health-related projects and events. The Yuba-Sutter Diabetes Support & Resource Center will hold a Luminary Event on the 14th, in support of World Diabetes Day. The event will begin at 5:00 PM at Town Square Fountain, on 461 Plumas Blvd. Participants will honor loved ones with T1D by lighting luminary bags at dusk, and bracelets will be available for $3. There are literally hundreds of ways you can express yourself. However, you will want to make sure that your ID is not so decorative that it is unrecognizable as a medical identification. After all, the primary purpose of a medical ID is to alert emergency and medical personnel, and even the public, to the fact that you have a medical condition (in this case, diabetes). It won’t do you any good if you don’t wear it Wearing your Medical ID all of the time, even when you sleep, is important. If you get into trouble with a low or high blood sugar, and you can’t help yourself, emergency medical personnel will see that you have diabetes, and will know what to do to help you right away. If you don’t have your medical ID on you, then they aren’t going to know that you are diabetic. It happens every day that people with diabetes are pulled over by law enforcement for having a low blood sugar while driving. They may be swerving, or running off the road. If the law enforcement officer sees that the person has a medical ID on their wrist or other easily visible area, they can quickly determine that the person may be having a low blood sugar due to diabetes, and act accordingly. This could save you a whole lot of hassle, and keeps you safe. The officer will know what to do. They are trained to know how to treat low blood sugar for this very reason. If the officer does not see that you have a medical ID on because you forgot to wear it, he or she could think you are intoxicated. Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes Awareness Month

As you might know, October is Diabetes Awareness Month. We put together a short little video with a friend of ours, whose son has diabetes. Perhaps youre one of our customers who shops with us because of our selection of diabetes medical IDs . Or, perhaps like many of our customers, you know someone who has diabetes, but you dont know very much about it, what the difference is between Diabetes Type 1 and Type 2. Either way, we think youll enjoy the short video we put together to tell Daveys story. Please take a moment watch the clip below, leave a comment if youd like, and let us know what your experience with diabetes is. If youre interested in learning more about the causes of diabetes, how to prevent it or how to treat it, visit the American Diabetes Associations website. While its understandable that many with diabetes value their privacy, and are reluctant to wear a Medical ID that labels them, healthcare professionals and emergency responders like police officers and paramedics all agree that wearing Medical ID jewelry saves lives. The stigma surrounding medical alert jewelry is unfortunate and risky for those who choose not to wear their medical id. However, as more and more athletes like Lance Armstrong and celebrities like young Nick Jonas (from the Jonas Brothers Band) acknowledge their illnesses and overcome the challenges they present in the public eye, Americans with chronic illness are accepting the notion that illness doesnt imply weakness; in fact, theyre discovering that overcoming health challenges builds character and demonstrates perseverance. It takes courage and endurance to live with a chronic illness. And one step toward responsible management of diabetes is to wear Medical ID jewelry. When choosing a medical id, its important to consider emerge Continue reading >>

Tattoos

Tattoos

November is Diabetes Awareness Month and so November of 2006 seemed the appropriate time to have a diabetes awareness tattoo created. My son, Liam was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the ripe old age of two. Every day I strive to keep him as healthy as possible. Every day I work to ensure that his life is as normal as possible. Diabetes does not make that easy. That is one of the reasons that I created the online community called Diabetes Advocacy (www.diabetesadvocacy.com ). Each year Diabetes Advocacy has done its bit to increase awareness of diabetes and diabetes related issues in this country. We have sent out calendars filled with people living with diabetes and have created booklets filled with their stories. In November of 2006, we took diabetes awareness to a level. Across North America—from Newfoundland to California, people came together through Diabetes Advocacy with one common goal. They have decided to have a tattoo done to raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes. I did as well. No one in my immediate family had a clue that I was even considering this. My oldest son was shocked. My youngest told me I took after him and was tough! Despite the initial shock, the reaction has been the same—Wow! I would like to thank Bernard at Peek-a-Boo Tattoos in Stephenville for creating a true work of art and a picture of love. The tattoo you see below was created by him from a very rough concept I brought to him. He created two hearts for my two children—equal in my love. He added a touch of color that reflected their birthstones. He kept hues soft and loving. The ribbons are grey and in Liam’s case, end in the Diabetes Awareness ribbon. His heart also shows the drop of blood that he must part with every time he eats and plays so that we can ensure his blood glucose Continue reading >>

How Wristbands Support Juvenile Diabetes Awareness?

How Wristbands Support Juvenile Diabetes Awareness?

How Wristbands Support Juvenile Diabetes Awareness? By Billie Jean Bateson in Awareness , Health Best Way To UseCustom Bracelets for Education, Awareness Wristbands personalized with diabetes awareness message help us to raise awareness and educate people on this serious disease. More than 15,000 children are diagnosed with juvenile diabetes each year. Juvenile diabetes is Type 1 diabetes diagnosed in a child. Itis very different than Type 2 diabetes, and educating the public about the difference between the two is an important step in helping people understand the challenges of managing Type 1 diabetes. November is American Diabetes Month, which includes many events to raise awareness of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes (also known as juvenile-onset or insulin-dependent diabetes), accounts for 5 to 10 out of 100 people who have diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body's immune system destroys the cells that release insulin, eventually eliminating insulin production from the body. Without insulin, cells cannot absorb sugar (glucose), which they need to produce energy. Juvenile diabetes can be difficult to manage and can greatly affect a child or teens life. While advances in medicine and technology have come a long way, more research is needed to help manage Type 1 diabetes and help children with this disease live normal lives. There is no cure for juvenile diabetes. Taking insulin keeps children with diabetes alive, it is not a cure. Here are some important facts about juvenile diabetes from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation : While obesity has been identified as one of the triggers for type 2 diabetes, it has no relation to the cause of type 1 diabetes. Scientists do not yet know exactly what causes T1D, but they believe that both genetic and en Continue reading >>
