Type 2 diabetes – Your body does not make or use insulin well. You may need to take pills or insulin to help control your diabetes. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes. Gestational (jest-TAY-shun-al) diabetes – Some women get this kind of diabetes when they are pregnant. Most of the time, it goes away after the baby is born. But even if it goes away, these women and their children have a greater chance of getting diabetes later in life. You are the most important member of your health care team. For as long as he can remember, Tom Atkins had a dessert table in his home that featured five or six rich sweets to choose from every day, some homemade and some store-bought. Not anymore. The dessert table has been folded up and put in the attic, says Atkins, a 60-year-old pastor in West Pawlet, Vermont. Atkins was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after a routine physical several months ago, and getting rid of the dessert table was just one of the changes he had to make to manage his diabetes. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body doesnt use insulin properly and cant produce enough insulin to make up for it, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Insulin is a hormone needed to regulate blood sugar. A type 2 diabetes care plan includes lifestyle changes, medication, and sometimes insulin replacement therapy. Theres a lot you can do to control the course of the disease, and changes in lifestyle can dramatically improve blood sugar control and the outcome of the illness, says William Fox, MD , an internist in Charlottesville, Virginia. Atkins says his blood sugar was 300 milligrams per deciliter of blood (mg/dL) when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. To put this into perspective: Diabetes is defined as 126 mg/dL or higher, according to the ADA. Today, Atkins blood sugar is down to 99 mg/dL and hes proud of that.
