Tai Chi Chuan Exercise Decreases A1C Levels Along With Increase of Regulatory T-Cells and Decrease of Cytotoxic T-Cell Population in Type 2 Diabetic Patients "Tai Chi Can Help Control Type 2 Diabetes" LONDON: Tai Chi Chuan, the traditional Chinese martial arts exercises, could help curb symptoms of type 2 diabetes, according to a new study. The study suggested that Tai Chi might prompt a fall in blood glucose levels, or improve blood glucose metabolism, triggering a drop in the inflammatory response, reports the British Medical Journal. The findings of the study indicate that regular Tai Chi Chuan exercise improves T cell helper function of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with an increase in T-bet transcription factor and IL-12 production. T cells are a vital constituent of the body's immune system, which generate powerful chemicals, including interleukins (ILs), which alter the immune response. Diabetes. A Louisiana State University study found that people who had plantar peripheral neuropathy due to diabetes, after 24 weeks of Tai Chi classes enjoyed an increased sensitivity of the soles of the feet, greater balance, and faster walking speed. (Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi. Page 118.) Diabetes. A few studies, including one randomized trial, have reported improvements in blood sugar control following Tai Chi training. However, most of the more rigorous RCTs have not reported any apparent benefit of Tai Ch on glucose metabolism. (Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi. Page 158.) Good Move Consider Tai Chi For Better Diabetes Control

Good Move Consider Tai Chi For Better Diabetes Control

Good Move Consider Tai Chi for Better Diabetes Control Science recently uncovered a good reason to recommend meditative physical exercise to your patients with diabetes. According to a University of Florida study, a regular tai chi exercise program may help lower blood glucose levels, allowing people with diabetes to better control their disease. Looking at adults with type 2 diabetes, the study found that participants who were involved with a supervised tai chi exercise program two days per week with three days of home practice for six months lowered their fasting blood glucose levels, better managed their disease, and improved their overall quality of life compared with those who participated at a much lower level of intervention. Tai chi is an ancient Chinese form of meditation that combines breathing and relaxation techniques with slow, deliberate movements. Study author Beverly Roberts, PhD, RN, FAAN, FGSA, the Annabel Davis Jenks endowed professor for teaching and research in clinical nursing excellence at the University of Florida College of Nursing, says studies such as hers have demonstrated the practices vast health benefits. Along with Rhayun Song, PhD, RN, of Chungnam National University, Roberts studied tai chis effects on older Korean adults with type 2 diabetes. The results were featured in the June issue of The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Roberts says tai chi is a great recommendation for patients who dont like to exercise. The style and movements of tai chi are very slowcircular and fluid is a good way to think of them, she says. That makes it easier for people who have trouble moving quickly. It doesnt require sweating and the huffing and puffing that are associated with other exercises. And people really like the idea of it bei Continue reading >>

Tai Chi Improves Diabetes Control

Tai Chi Improves Diabetes Control

According to two small studies published in the British Journal ofSports Medicine in April 2008, Tai Chi exercises can improve bloodglucose levels and improve the control of type 2 diabetes and immunesystem response. Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art that combines diaphragmatic breathingand relaxation with soft, gentle movements. It is considered moderateexercise, which has previously been shown to improve immune systemresponse, in contrast to strenuous physical activity, which depressesit. Previous studies have shown that it improves respiratory andcardiovascular function, while improving flexibility and relieving stress . Type 2 diabetes is a form of diabetes that usually sets in later inlife. It is associated with chronic inflammation cause by increaseglucose levels in the blood, known as hyperglycemia. When there isexcess blood sugar, it can combine with hemogloben, the oxygentransporter in the red blood cell, it can become glycated hemogloben. This can be used to indicate the levels of excess sugars. In the immune system, helper T cells prompt stimulus of other immunesystem cells, altering the immune response. They respond to specificantigens, producing interleukins and other important signalingchemicals. As a result, they are essential for the cell mediated immuneresponse . In a first study, the investigators sought to analyze the impact of a12 week Tai Chi Chuan exercise program on helper T cellactivity in 30 patients with type 2 diabetes, and contrast this with 30healthy people of the same age. After 12 weeks in the exercise program, the levels of glycatedhemoglobin levels fell significantly, from 7.59% to 7.16% in diabeticpatients, a significant difference. Interleukin-12, which boosts theimmune response, increased in level; interleukin-4, which lessens theimmun Continue reading >>

Tai Chi For Diabetes Control

Tai Chi For Diabetes Control

The ancient martial art of Tai Chi, a series of flowing movements and poses, is finding a new following among people trying to control their diabetes. See how this graceful series of movements can help you build strength, reduce stress, lose weight, and find balance in your life. "Diet and exercise are the cornerstones of type 2 diabetes management," says Paul Lam, M.D., an expert in the benefits of Tai Chi for people with type 2 diabetes. "People with diabetes who exercise regularly have better control over their blood glucose levels and fewer complications, such as heart disease and stroke." Working with other Tai Chi masters and a team of medical experts, Lam developed a special form of Tai Chi for people with diabetes. Tai Chi is a series of flowing movements and poses. It includes elements of sun and yang, two Tai Chi styles. "The sun style helps improve inner energy and is easy and safe to learn. The yang style has slightly more physical exertion and increases the exercise level," he says. Lam conducts workshops worldwide to teach instructors his Tai Chi for Diabetes program including Keith Root, who teaches a class in Bloomington, Minnesota. "Being in a class with other people who have diabetes and may be overweight is an advantage," Keith says, who has been practicing Tai Chi since 1995. "They see other overweight people in class, including me, and think that if we can do it, they can, too." Continue reading >>
