Type 1 & 2 Diabetes: An Alternative To Starbucks For People With Diabetes

Type 1 & 2 Diabetes: An Alternative To Starbucks For People With Diabetes

A Frappuccino from Starbucks is delicious, no doubt about it, but it can have close to five hundred calories if you go for all the options, and over sixty hefty grams of carbohydrates. Not a good idea if you have diabetes, but then again, depriving yourself is no fun either. What to do, what to do…. Well, now you can drink up with the rest of the nation’s thirty million coffee imbibers, because the New York Coffee Company is bottling a pretty fair substitute for those calorie-laden coffee shop lattes. Called “Iced ‘Spresso,” they’re sweetened with Splenda and have only 90 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, and 11 grams of carbs in a 9.5 ounce bottle. That’s quite a drop from the 200 calories in Starbucks’ offerings of the same size, and they even carry the same caffeine punch as a standard cup of coffee. We’ve personally tried all four of their flavors (Mocha Mudslide,American Vanilla, Ultra Lite Espresso Latte, and Caramel Dulce DeLeche), and every one of them is downright delicious. They’re kind of pricey at $19.99 for a pack of twelve, but not bad compared to what you’d spend at the coffee shop. If you happen to live in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, or Chicago, they’re available in stores. Otherwise, go online at www.newyorkcoffeeco.com to make your order. 18 Guilt-free Starbucks Drinks For When You're Trying To Lose Weight

18 Guilt-free Starbucks Drinks For When You're Trying To Lose Weight

What's the first thing you think of when you roll out of bed in the morning? If your answer is coffee , you're not alone. While it's tempting to grab an overloaded Frappuccino on the way to the office to get you through the morning, the sweet treat is packed with fat, sugar, and calories and is best left to special occasions. When it comes to your daily brew, trying to be a smidge healthier will do your body good, and Carolyn Brown, registered dietitian for Food Trainers , as well as Keri Glassman, registered dietitian and founder of The Nutritious Life , know exactly which drinks should become your go-tos and which should get the boot. Before heading to Starbucks, remember these three golden rules: Avoid sweeteners at all costs. Syrups, both real and artificial, skyrocket your drink to meal-like proportions. And with that many chemicals in one sitting, it triggers sweets craving for the rest of the day. Stick to the 60-100 calorie range. Consider it the safe zone that won't derail your diet . If the local 'Bucks doesn't have calories listed on the menu, opt for tall and grande sizes (sorry, venti). And you're only allowed one refill max. Get back to basics. Coffee, tea, espresso, and cappuccino are all great, healthy options. If you're really watching your overall calorie and sugar intake, you can use healthy add-ons like cinnamon or nutmeg to give it some punch. Now that those tips are converted to memory, it's time for the fun stuff. While these definitely aren't the healthiest drinks to walk the face of the planet (you know, if drinks could walk), Glassman says they're healthier , and drinking one won't be the end of the universe. 1. Teavana Shaken Ice Passion Tango Tea. Ask for the unsweetened version of this fruity drink. It's already packed with zest, so there's Continue reading >>

Ask D'mine: Battling Snark + Surviving Starbucks

It's a Holiday weekend, but the surviving-diabetes-train never stops. Our Ask D'Mine weekly advice column host Wil Dubois is workin' overtime to answer your every query. This week, he's taking on online commenters who bite, and coffee drinks that hopefully don't. {Need help navigating life with diabetes? [email protected]} Chad from Illinois, type 1, writes: When I put up positive messages on some diabetic chat sites I've gotten replies to my posts stating that I must be in denial, or that my "eyes are closed." I'm starting to think that maybe there are people out there who feel it's impossible for someone to be so at peace with a disease like diabetes, and not be full of anger. I'm focused on my family, community and faith. In no way do I feel that I am better or worse than anyone else. I am just different, and I am A-OK with that. What upsets me is when people complain anonymously. I don't want to cause a ruckus with anyone. What would you do to let people know that this is just my own philosophy? [email protected] D'Mine answers: Oh boy, where to start... Well, I don't think you're in denial. I don't think your eyes are closed. And don't worry, you're not the only one at peace with having diabetes. I feel the same way. So at least there's the two of us! But yes, there're a lot of people who cannot conceive of any feeling towards diabetes other than anger. So why the anger? Well... People are tired. People are broke. People are scared about the future. And that's just garden-variety people. Add a pesky chronic illness to the mix and ya' gotta great recipe for anger. But that's only half the story. Because it gets more complicated. Because there are no diabetes facts. None of our experts can even agree on something as simple as what the hell we should eat. Hey, medicine Continue reading >>

Diabetes In A Cup: Starbucks Label Speaks Unfiltered Truth

Diabetes In A Cup: Starbucks Label Speaks Unfiltered Truth

Starbucks baristas aren’t known for their impeccable labeling skills. Sometimes I’m Brian, others I’m Brittany. Once I became Rihanna, and was serenaded with “Work” in the middle of the coffee shop. “DIABETES HERE I COME” takes it to a whole new level. By now you’ve probably seen the viral post, shared by an insulted patron who was just trying to sip his white chocolate mocha in peace. Especially offended because both of his sisters suffer from type 1 diabetes, he returned the cup to the baristas with the message: “2 of my sisters are diabetic, so … not funny.” No, it’s not the place of a Starbucks employee to inform its customers that many of the drinks on the menu are liquid diabetes. (Some people are even arguing that this entire thing is a stunt orchestrated by the customer himself.) To publicly shame someone for any health choice is completely insensitive, and it’s understandably a particularly sensitive issue for this man who has seen family members struggle with the disease. But this message definitely shouldn’t fall on deaf ears. A 16-ounce white chocolate mocha made with 2-percent milk has 470 calories (more than a standard meal) and a whopping 58 grams of sugar—that is more than double the daily recommended intake for women and 21.5 grams more than a man should be consuming in a day. Beyond that, type 2 diabetes is a real problem, a growing epidemic with 86 million adults over the age of 20 having been diagnosed as pre-diabetic, a condition characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. And it’s not a cheap problem either—in 2012, diabetes and its related complications accounted for $245 billion in total medical costs and lost work and wages. But it’s a problem that can be avoided, since lifestyle factors (like diet, exercise Continue reading >>

Starbucks Latte With Soya Milk And Sugar Free Syrups.

Diabetes Forum The Global Diabetes Community Find support, ask questions and share your experiences. Join the community Starbucks Latte with Soya Milk and sugar free syrups. Hi all. Just been out and about when No1 child dragged me into Starbucks! Initially I assumed nothing here for me as I like a Latte. So asked the barista do you have lactose free milk.He said no sorry, but his girlfriend is type 1 and brings in her own, which is a good idea.Anyway he suggested soya milk which they have and also three sugar free syrups! Can't remember all the flavours but hazelnut was one of em.This is worth a try methinks.I don't like soya milk in tea, but in this case as if by magic it was better than my usual latte fix, really good.Didn't opt for syrup, as it was expensive enough anyway So a real find. I reckon 200 ml of soya milk as it was a medium, so say 68 calories and say 1g carbs. As a newbie I stand to be corrected on those numbers as I am assuming it was unsweetened soya milk, just realised that eek. Will double check next time.I never buy cake or cookies there so didn't ask re low carb options. More and more I am coming to the conclusion that people are ingenious and will find ways to get as close as they can to a pre diabetic experience without the carbs, as demonstrated by the recipes on this forum.Just gonna make oopsie bread now, BLT for breakfast!!! Awwww nuts!!! Mebbe it's time to lobby a big outfit like Starbucks to change that then. With all the milk they get through every day in each outlet, surely a few cartons of unsweetened soya milk isn't a big ask???? They are doing sugar free syrups after all. However if it was sweetened soya milk it looks like a few more calories and maybe 6g carbs, I can live with that once in a while. Tested 6.7 before I went out and it's a Continue reading >>

Fit 5 On Friday: Lattes And Blood Sugar

Fit 5 On Friday: Lattes And Blood Sugar

Whether you are into the holiday spirit or not, one thing is for sure; who can resist all those delicious flavored and seasonal latte’s at your favorite coffee stop? For those of us who have had diabetes and who have been taking insulin for longer than we can remember, it goes without saying that we need to consider the carbohydrate content of EVERY SINGLE thing we put in our mouths. However, there is the occasion, where it is very easy to simply forget about liquid carbs. When you’re in a rush and trying to find your wallet in your purse it’s easy to forget to pull out your pump or insulin pen and guesstimate the carbs in that seemingly innocent flavored latte you just ordered. I met up with some old friends from camp the other day at Panera. We all ordered the same thing; a non-fat vanilla latte. I told them that I had found out that the vanilla syrup at Panera is always sugar-free. So we sat down and sipped our hot drinks. I know enough that sugar-free or not, caffeine is just one of those things that does give my blood sugar a little spike, and that there are still minimal carbs even in sugar-free syrup. So I guessed, and took about 2 units on my pump. Two hours later, I was 412. WTF!!!!!!! I swear, when things like this happen, I want to go back to the restaurant or shop and grab the ditzy teeny bopper behind the latte counter and scream “Because you didn’t pay attention to my order I feel like shit!” But, I take a deep breath, and wonder. Is the syrup really sugar-free, it couldn’t have been, or the girl grabbed the wrong syrup. No lie, I go to Starbucks the next day and order a SKINNY peppermint mocha, which I am assured once again has SUGAR FREE syrup in it. Bam, 2 hours later. 325!!! Really?! After going online and doing some research, I found out Continue reading >>

What Can I Drink If I Have Diabetes?

What Can I Drink If I Have Diabetes?

Having diabetes means that you have to be aware of everything you eat or drink. Knowing the amount of carbohydrates you ingest and how they may affect your blood sugar is crucial. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends zero-calorie or low-calorie drinks. The main reason is to prevent a spike in blood sugar. Choosing the right drinks can help you avoid unpleasant side effects, manage your symptoms, and maintain a healthy weight. Water Unsweetened tea Unsweetened coffee Sugar-free fruit juice Low-fat milk Zero- or low-calorie drinks are typically your best bet when choosing a drink. Squeeze some fresh lemon or lime juice into your drink for a refreshing, low-calorie kick. Whether you’re at home or at a restaurant, here are the most diabetes-friendly beverage options. 1. Water When it comes to hydration, water is the best option for people with diabetes. That’s because it won’t raise your blood sugar levels. High blood sugar levels can cause dehydration. Drinking enough water can help your body eliminate excess glucose through urine. Women should drink approximately 8 glasses of water each day, while men should drink about 10 glasses. If plain water doesn’t appeal to you, create some variety by: adding slices of lemon, lime, or orange adding sprigs of flavourful herbs, such as mint, basil, or lemon balm crushing a couple of fresh or frozen raspberries into your drink 2. Tea Research has shown that green tea has a positive effect on your general health. It can also help reduce your blood pressure and lower your LDL cholesterol levels. Some research suggests that drinking up to six cups a day may lower your risk of type 2 diabetes. However, more research is needed. Whether you choose green, black, or herbal tea, you should avoid sweeteners. For a refreshi Continue reading >>

Prediabetes? The Coffee-health Connection

Prediabetes? The Coffee-health Connection

New research has shown—yet again—that drinking coffee can reduce your type 2 diabetes risk. The study, in nearly 1,500 Greek adults followed for a decade, found that people who downed the equivalent of 2.5 to 3 cups of brewed coffee daily had half the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. And people who drank about 1.5 cups of joe a day cut their risk by about 30%. “Apparently healthy individuals with no history of cardiovascular disease may benefit from daily consumption of this amount of coffee,” one of the study’s authors, Efi Koloverou, MmedSci, a clinical dietitian and doctoral candidate at Harokopio University in Athens, told DiabeticLifestyle in an e-mail interview. The findings were published July 1, 2015 in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. There were too few decaf drinkers in the new study to draw conclusions about whether caffeine-free brew would have the same benefits. But there’s strong evidence from other research that decaf has similar protective effects, according to Mary Ann Johnson, PhD, the Flatt Professor in Foods and Nutrition at the University of Georgia in Athens and a national spokesperson for the American Society for Nutrition. Researchers suspect that a substance in the coffee bean itself is what helps to lower inflammation in the body. This in turn can reduce overall risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Johnson points to a 2014 meta-analysis (a study in which the results of several smaller studies are pooled and analyzed together) which included 28 studies and 1.1 million people and found both coffee and decaf coffee drinkers had a reduced likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. And the more a person drank, the lower their risk. Java drinkers got more good news earlier this year, when the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Continue reading >>
