This year, the show is having guests again and two of our own showed up there. First, Down the Rabbit Holes Jeff Somogyi joined the MMN crew to talk about Point Blank, The Phantom and The Village. From the episode description: Are you ready for controversy? Michael, Dave, and David are joined by very special guest Jeff Somogyi ( Nerd Lunch Presents Down the Rabbit Hole ) to talk about some divisive movies. We question Lee Marvins murder skills, M Night Shyamalans storytelling skills, and Billy Zanes pronunciation of refuse? Okay, we dont question much about Billy Zane, but there may be another element or two in The Phantom that make us wonder. Check out the great discussion and see if you can guess the secret connection between the movies before its revealed. And then Pax returned to discuss a couple of this favorite movies and one he doesnt like that much. From the episode description: Lots of cool guests on this one as Dan Taylor and Ron Ankeny (Starmageddon, N3rd World) and Paxton Holley (Nerd Lunch, Cult Film Club, Hellbent for Letterbox) join Dave, David, and Michael to talk grunge, guns, and gigawatts. The Story Of Tokaji Wine

The Story Of Tokaji Wine

Advanced , Articles , dessert wine , Favorite , Hungary , Tokaj , Wine Regions The wines of the Hungarian region of Tokaj, or as they say it toe-kay, are a window into the past. For one, the word for wine in Hungarian, Bor, isnt derived from the latin word for wine (vinum). This suggests that the area has a winemaking history that grew independently of, and perhaps before Roman expansion. There have also been discoveries unearthed of prehistoric forests in northeastern Hungary (close to Tokaj) that reveal Devonian era vines, the precursors to the modern grape vine. Regardless of these two intriguing finds, its the sweet wines of Tokaj that provide the most compelling story of Hungarys role in the modern history of wine. Tokaji was once one of the most important wines in the world. It was coveted by royal customers including Hungarian noblemen, Ferenc Rkczi II, Peter the Great, King Louis XIV, Catherine the Great and even Austrian composer Joseph Haydn (who received some payments in the form of wine). The most desirable of these elixirs (and the most expensive) was that of Tokaji Eszencia, a liquid goo that contains as much sweetness as straight syrup. Its so intense that Eszencia is typically enjoyed from a tablespoon and, because of the high sugar content, will age 200+ years. In Bordeaux, the weather along the Garonne River is dank enough to produce the same noble rot essential to the wines of Sauternes. In Germany, the Mosel River provides the same conditions that affect Riesling grapes that are now part of the classification of German Riesling. And, in Alsace, France and Friuli, Italy producers even donned the words Tokay or Tokai on their labels to capture buyers. This confusion lead to the classification of the vineyards of Tokaj in 1730, which lead to a noble de Continue reading >>

The native form of this personal name is Buzski Gyrgy. This article uses Western name order when mentioning individuals. [buki r] , born November 24, 1949, Kaposvr, Hungary) is the Biggs Professor of Neuroscience at New York University School of Medicine . [1] Dr. Buzskis primary interests is neural syntax, i.e., how segmentation of neural information is organized by the numerous brain rhythms to support cognitive functions. He identified the cellular-synaptic basis of hippocampal theta, gamma oscillations and sharp waves with associated fast oscillations, their relationship to each other and to behavior and sleep. He was the first to demonstrate the role of GABAergic interneurons in network oscillations. Buzsakis recognition of the importance hierarchical organization of brain rhythms of different frequencies and their cross-frequency coupling has opened up opportunities for the dissection of cognitive mechanisms in health and disease. His most influential work, the two-stage model of memory trace consolidation, demonstrates how the neocortex-mediated information during learning transiently modifies hippocampal networks, followed by reactivation and consolidation of these memory traces during sharp wave-ripple patterns of sleep. Buzsakis demonstration that in the absence of changing environmental signals, cortical circuits continuously generate self-organized cell assembly sequences is an important link to the neuronal assembly basis of cognitive functions. His experiments demonstrated how skewed distribution of firing rates supports robustness, sensitivity, plasticity and stability in neuronal networks. He has pioneered numerous technical innovations, including large-scale recording methods using silicon chips and the NeuroGrid, an organic, comformable electrode syste Continue reading >>

Yivo | Names And Naming

Miriam Leye Kuperman, Sore Rivke Weinreich, and Rokhl Ajzenberg, Szydowiec, Poland, 1925. Their personal names are examples of Ashkenazic forms of biblical names (Miriam, Leah, Sarah, Rebecca, and Rachel). (YIVO) The most appropriate way of considering names used by Jews in Eastern Europe is to separate the discussion of personal names from that of family names. Indeed, personal names represent an organic part of Jewish culture. Their corpus developed over the centuries in a natural way, inside the community. Their history is closely related to that of Yiddish . On the other hand, but for a very few exceptions, the family names were invented during a short period of time, around the turn of the nineteenth century. Their adoption was forced by state authorities. Until the beginning of the twentieth century, in numerous communities they were marginal for Jewish self-consciousness. Sources from the thirteenth through the sixteenth centuries show that in various parts of Eastern Europe, Jews principally bore biblical and postbiblical Hebrew names, while other appellations originated in Jewish communities of western German lands and Austria. Names of Slavic origin were not unusual in BohemiaMoravia (where all names were of Czech origin) and in the area of Lww and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (where they mainly were of Ukrainian and Belorussian origin). It was only at the end of the sixteenth century that a large homogenization, or Yiddishizing, of Jewish names took place in all of Eastern Europe. It was characterized by the following variations: Ashkenazic forms of biblical names: Moyshe for Moses, Itskhok for Isaac, Ya(n)kev for Jacob; Sore for Sara and Rokhl for Rachel (at the end of the 1600s, the phonetic shift in the Yiddish dialects spoken in Poland and Ukraine gave r Continue reading >>

Kappa Alpha Theta - Alpha Epsilon

In 1897, a local group at Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island, became Alpha Epsilon Chapter. By 1912, one hundred eight women had become Thetas at Brown. Future initiations were prohibited by the administration, leading to the chapter's demise in 1912. Seventy-two years later, two collegians believing there was a place for women's fraternities on campus launched a successful campaign for affiliation, and Alpha Epsilon returned to Brown in 1984. Kappa Alpha Theta laws prohibit any contact with college chapters, alumnae groups, or the general membership, including Fraternity officers, for commercial appeals, charitable appeals, or the advocacy of personal opinions.
