In the mornings, I have to take my thyroid medicine a half hour to an hour before eating. Should I do my blood sugar before I take my thyroid medicine? Or is it ok to wait until just before breakfast? I am not sure what type of impact that medicine might have on my blood sugar. Diabetics must note the carbohydrate content of food while attempting to consume adequate protein, fat and vitamins and minerals. Slim fast is okay for diabetics as long as blood glucose levels can be maintained. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce insulin, and therefore is often insulin-dependent. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body produces too little insulin or the cells do not respond to insulin. This type may or may not be dependent on insulin. Insulin-dependent diabetes requires careful monitoring of food intake and units of insulin injected. One unit insulin is required for every 15 grams of carbohydrates consumed. The strawberry flavored Slim Fast Optima contains 245 calories, 12 grams of protein, five grams of fat, and 38 grams of carbohydrates. The nutrient content states that one can of Slim Fast accounts for 2 1/2 carbohydrates, 1 1/2 protein and 1/2 of a fat exchange. While Slim Fast is fortified with many vitamins and minerals, it does not contain the same benefits achieved from fruits and vegetables, such as satiety and minimal effects on glycemic index. If Slim Fast must be consumed consider one can to be equal to 2 1/2 Units of insulin. It will also account for 2 1/2 carbohydrate exchange. For better alternatives to Slim Fast, consider replacing with half a sandwich or beef vegetable soup and salad, which offer many nutrients with fewer carbohydrates. I just had a frightening experience. A severe hypoglycemic, I took my regular 5 units of R Humulin 30 minutes before lunch. Instead of my normal sandwich and milk at lunch, I drank a glass of Slim Fast with milk. I carefully read the label and figured out that it was almost identical to the sandwich in calories, carbs and sugars. Later that afternoon I laid down for a nap and, after a couple of hours, my wife was unable to wake me. She knew it was a low, but was unable to force anything down me, as I was virtually comatose. The paramedics arrived shortly and measured my blood sugar at 22 mg/dl. They are not allowed to give an injection, so they could not administer Glucagon, but rushed me to a nearby hospital where they started me on an IV of glucose. Even then, it was over an hour before they could wake me. I am a constant reader of Diabetes Health magazine and have never read anything that would have warned me of such an experience. My doctor thinks that Slim Fast acted very rapidly, and was gone before the insulin wore offleaving me extremely low. I write this as a warning to others who might not know to consider the rapidity of absorption of sugars. I am 69 years old and have been a type 1 for 30 years. Q: I have type 2 diabetes. Is SlimFast, the diet drink, good for diabetes? Despite claims that it helps with weight loss, a SlimFast shake is not a good choice for people with diabetes. One serving contains 25 grams of carbohydrate, 5 of which come from fiber. Although this isn't extremely high, the product is sweetened with both sugar and fructose, which are listed as third and fifth among the ingredients, respectively. SlimFast is also pretty low in protein, providing only 10 grams per can. Studies have shown that moderate to high protein intake helps reduce appetite, increases metabolic rate more than carbs or protein, and can help prevent loss of muscle mass during weight loss and the aging process. A better alternative is to make your own high-protein, low-carb shake using protein powder, a tablespoon of almond butter or peanut butter, unsweetened almond or coconut milk, and a sugar-free sweetener. Join the community Hi,I've been on slimfast for a few weeks now,and have been fine.I've been eating plenty of Vegetables and fruit etc as snacks and a good evening meal.This week though I have felt really unwell,my eyes are really bothering me ,especially in the evenings with blurred vision and I'm so tired all day.I thought it was because I'm still only managing with about 3 hours of sleep because of the pain in my feet from the Neuropathy etc.Also we have a lot going on at the moment with a house move this year and Richard hoping to retire.As I've said before our Practice Nurse doesn't believe in testing my own numbers,but because I'm feeling so ill this week I have been testing :roll: I'm usually 9.9 before breakfast and in the aftenoon and evening,after eating I've got it down to between 7.9 abd 8.8.I've been falling asleep in front of the PC and when I try to iron I just feel myself drifting off, so stop.Sitting down is hopeless I just fall asleep for at least an hour,even though I try not to :? What about that one? And so on ... From Slimfast on down, there are a lot of liquid "meal replacers" out there. All have carb counts; some have diabetic exchanges. Strictly speaking, you can factor such a product into your meal plan. Should you? Be careful. All of the ones I looked at: Slimfast, Ensure, Ensure Plus, Ensure Glucerna, CarboRite At Last, Diabetic Care Choice, and Enterex Diabetic, are "loaded" foods. Designed to provide a meal's nutrition, they are full of protein, carb, fat, and vitamins. If you have nothing else to eat, they can keep you alive. Used under close supervision, they'll do what they say they'll do -- help keep you slim, properly fed, and well nourished. But there's a problem -- and it's not with the products -- it's with us. In America, we're accustomed to reaching for food because we feel like it, and eating 'til we're full. Undisciplined snacking. It's dangerous. It's why we're the fattest nation on the planet. It's the "see-food" diet. What's wrong with treating a can of Glucerna, or a container of Diabetic Care Choice, as an impulsive snack? Lots.
