Comprehensive Diabetes Center

Comprehensive Diabetes Center

Diabetes with its related complications ranks as the third leading cause of death due to disease in the United States. More than 16 million Americans have diabetes. Controlling diabetes by balancing the proper meal plan and exercise, along with medication, as necessary, may prevent or delay long-term complications. The Comprehensive Diabetes Center serves all patients of the Riverside Medical Clinic, from infancy through maturity, along with pertinent family members, with consideration of social and cultural beliefs. All aspects of diabetes and its treatment, as it applies to each individual, are covered. Patient information is the key to successful management of diabetes. If you have recently been diagnosed or even if you have had diabetes for many years, you may need help in learning how to make diabetes a part of your life rather than letting it take control. We will help you separate the myths from the realities of diabetes. There is no such thing as borderline diabetes. Taking insulin will cause me to go blind or lose a leg. Studies prove that good blood sugar control can significantly reduce the risk of complications. I have brittle diabetes and nobody can control my blood sugar. Blood sugar control is achievable by balancing your medications, exercise, meal plan, and regular follow-up with your health care team. What is the next step in achieving my goal? The most important element in successful management of diabetes is knowledge. Riverside Campus, The Ottawa Hospital - 2 Photos - 113 Reviews - Hospital - 1967 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1h 7w9

My husband was brought into surgery at 9 this morning. Its 230 pm and no news from anyone. Im worried sick. The clerk wont even call in the back to get info for me. What the hell is going on with him?????? My husband had some minor surgery. When surgical day care called to say he'd be ready in 45 minutes I left to go and pick him up. At 47 minutes they called my phone to ask how much longer I would be. ...At the time I was parking the car in the parking lot. When I arrived at the desk I pressed the doorbell as instructed by the sign and no one answered. This happened three times while the person sitting at the desk ignored me . Finally the person working on records at the desk turned to look at me and brought me inside where my husband was still in the bed not even close to being ready to leave. I'm not sure why the second phone call was required to find out how far along I was as he wasn't close to being ready to be picked up. Seems like they almost had a timer put on! The nurse was abrupt and short with us so I'm not sure what went on but I didn't deserve the attitude. If that had been reversed I would have been kicked out of the hospital. See More Staff was great but..... Doctor Pitt failed as he was taking out hubby's gallbladde r to check if there were any stones left or might have fallen into the bile duct (since they don't check that, how st...upid) and because of that, hubby ended up at the General hospital for days waiting to pass the stone through his intestines !! The doctor that operated said "that's the worse pain one can go through!!! " Gee thanks Doctor Pitt. Worse days of suffering ever. We had to cancel our trip because of his negligence On another note since my last review of the cafeteria at Riverside was deleted: Wondering if the little cafeteria ca Continue reading >>

Home Patients & Visitors Clinics & Programs The lifetime risk for coronary vascular disease in people with diabetes is high, about 67% in men and 57% in women at age 50 years. The rate of fatal coronary heart disease is 3.5 times higher in patients with diabetes than in those without. The Diabetes Management Clinic is a collaboration between the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism at The Ottawa Hospital. This clinic is open to all patients newly diagnosed or living with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes who have been recently discharged from the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and who are not currently under the care of an endocrinologist.
