April 10, 2002 -- Diabetics may have a new weapon to help them lower their blood sugar levels . Rice bran was able to lower blood glucose by up to 30% in a small group of patients with type 1 or 2 diabetes participating in a pilot study. Researchers report that one out of four diabetics taking part in the 57-subject study were able to reduce their daily injection of insulin or medication dosages after adding stabilized rice bran to their diets for just two months. The findings were reported in the March issue of the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. "These are preliminary findings, and they need to be duplicated in a larger group of patients taking rice bran as a nutritional supplement for longer periods," says lead researcher Asaf A. Qureshi, PhD. "But in this study, rice bran proved to be very good at lowering blood glucose levels." Qureshi and colleagues at Advanced Medical Research in Madison, Wis., also found that patients with elevated cholesterol who consumed 20 grams per day of stabilized rice bran lowered their total serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels between 5% and 15%. The rice bran formulations evaluated by the researchers are manufactured by the California nutraceutical company NutraStar Inc. In company literature, rice bran is touted as "the most nutritious food on earth," and NutraStar markets its four rice bran products for a host of conditions including arthritis , constipation , and joint problems. But the diabetes research is the first human trial to offer scientific evidence of rice bran's benefit. A new study suggests that replacing normal cooking oils with a sesame oil and rice bran oil blend can offer important benefits for type 2 diabetes patients The prevalence of type 2 diabetes and the associated risks to cardiovascular health are major concerns for populations around the world. The extraction and purification process influences the quality and quantity of rice bran oil, which is rich in tocopherols, tocotrienols, -oryzanol, and unsaturated fatty acids. Indian researchers assigned 300 people newly diagnosed with the disease to one of three groups: One that consumed a blend of sesame oil (20 percent) and rice bran oil (80 percent), one that took diabetes medication, and one that both consumed the oil blend and took the medicationeach for eight weeks. Another group of 100 healthy people also consumed the oil. The sesame oil blend was used in their daily cooking, in place of their usual oils. After four weeks, improvements were seen in blood sugar control, LDL (bad) cholesterol , and triglycerides in the participants with diabetes who consumed the oil, with or without the medication, though those in the oil-plus-medication group did the best. After eight weeks, there was also an increase in HDL (good) cholesterol. No improvements were seen, however, in the healthy group overall. As the paper concluded, use of sesame oil blend as a cooking medium showed notably beneficial effects on glycemic control and lipids in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Sesame and Rice Bran Oil Treat Diabetes, Hypertension, Bad Cholesterol Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high levels of bad cholesterol are three of the most prevalent medical conditions today. Thats why drugs that treat these three conditions sell in the multiple billions every year. Yet research has confirmed a number of natural strategies that can help treat these conditions. This week, I want to mention two other oils that have received some attention lately. Lets start off with a relatively unknown oil called rice bran oil, or RBO for short. RBO isnt widely in use at this time in the United States, except commercially. However, its gaining in popularity, especially in Japan and India. RBO is derived from the bran, or outer hull, of the rice kernel. Whats so special about RBO? Well, studies in both humans and animals have shown that it can help lower LDL (or bad) cholesterol in people with moderately high cholesterol. One of these studies was reported in the January 2005 issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. In that study, which involved 14 people, RBO lowered LDL cholesterol levels significantly more than an oil blend (consisting of peanut oil, olive oil, corn oil, canola oil, palm oil, and butter) that was engineered to have a similar fatty acid composition to RBO. RBO contains a concentrated form of vitamin E called tocotrienol rich fraction (TRF). TRF has antioxidant properties, including cholesterol-lowering abilities. The results of a double-blind, cross-over study published in the March issue of the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry showed that one out of four diabetics among the 57 participants reduced their daily dosage of medication by 30 to 60 per cent after adding stabilised rice bran derivatives to their diet. "This is a significant finding in view of the short duration of the study," said Dr Asaf Qureshi, the principle researcher of the study. "While not all of the subjects were able to reduce their hyperglycaemic medications, all of the subjects were able to maintain a lower blood glucose level on these regimens as compared to their respective placebo groups." The stabilised rice bran supplements were RiSolubles and RiceMucil, marketed by the US group NutraStar under licence from their manufacturer, The RiceX Company. Testing involved 400 men and women for eight weeks, including 300 that had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, by replacing cooking oils in their diet with a blend of sesame and rice bran oil. The researchers, from Japans Fukuoka University and Indias Council of Medical Research, divided the patients into four groups. For two months, 100 healthy people and 100 Type 2 diabetes patients replaced their cooking oils with the sesame/rice bran blend, another 100 Type 2 diabetes patients were treated with five milligrams per day of the diabetes drug glibenclamide (glynase in the U.S.) and the remaining 100 Type 2 diabetes patients were treated with a combination of the same dosage of glibenclamide, along with consuming the sesame/rice bran oil blend over the two-month period. After four weeks and eight weeks, the researchers found the diabetes patients that consumed the oil blend had significant reductions in fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels. They also had lower levels of glycated hemoglobin, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and improved high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (good cholesterol).
