(pdf) Accuracy And Precision Of Four Value-added Blood Glucose Meters: The Abbott Optium, The Ddi Prodigy, The Hdi True Track, And The Hypoguard Assure Pro

Purpose: This study compared the accuracy and precision of four value-added glucose meters. Methods: Finger stick glucose measurements in diabetes patients were performed using the Abbott Diabetes Care (Alameda, CA) Optium, Diagnostic Devices, Inc. ( Miami, FL) DDI Prodigy (Fort Lauderdale, FL) HDI True Track Smart System , and Arkray, USA (Minneapolis, MN) HypoGuard Pro. Finger glucose measurements were compared with laboratory reference results. Accuracy was assessed by a Clarke error grid analysis (EGA), a Parke EGA, and within 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of the analysis). Meter precision was determined by calculating absolute mean differences in glucose values between duplicate samples (Kruskal-Wallis test). Results: Finger sticks were obtained from 125 diabetes patients, of which 90.4% were Caucasian, 51.2% were female, 83.2% had type 2 diabetes, and average age of 59 years (SD 14 years). Mean venipuncture blood glucose was 151 mg=dL (SD 65 mg=dL; range, 58474mg=dL). Clinical accuracy by Clarke EGA was demonstrated in 94% of Optium, 82% of Prodigy, 61% of True Track, and 77% of the Assure Pro samples (P<0.05 for Optium and True Track compared to all others). By Parke EGA, the True Track was signicantly less accurate than the other meters. Within 5% accuracy was achieved in 34%, 24%, 29%, and 13%, respectively (P<0.05 for Optium, Prodigy, and Assure Pro compared to True Track). Within 10% accuracy was signicantly greater for the Optium, Prodigy, and Assure Pro compared to True Track. Signicantly more Optium results demonstrated within 15% and 20% accuracy compared to the other meter systems. The HDI True Track was signicantly less Conclusions: The Abbott Optium was signicantly more accurate than the other meter systems, whereas the HDI True Track was signicantly less acc Continue reading >>

Prodigy Pocket Blood Glucose Monitoring System

Purchasing a glucose meter is an important task, especially for people who suffer with type 2 diabetes. The need to monitor blood sugar levels after meals is very important in terms of learning how to manage the diet properly and to make sure any diabetes medication currently used is still helping to keep glucose levels within an acceptable range. When buying a glucose meter, factors such as the features available with a given model, the ease of use, the accuracy of results, and the price are very important to consider. A glucose meter is nothing but a medical device for determining the approximate concentration of glucose in the blood. It is a key element of home glucose monitoring ( HBGM) by people with diabetes mellitus or hypoglycemia. A small drop of blood, obtained by pricking the skin with a lancet, is placed on a disposable test strip that the meter reads and uses to calculate the blood glucose level. The meter then displays the level in mg/ dl or mmol/l. Why do you need a glucose meter or why test your blood sugar? The process of monitoring one's own blood glucose with a glucose meter is often referred to as self-monitoring of blood glucose or "SMBG" .If you have diabetes, self-testing blood sugar (blood glucose) can be an important tool in managing your treatment plan and preventing long-term complications of diabetes. Here are few reasons why you need to invest in buying one: It helps you judge how well you are reaching overall treatment goals Understand how diet and exercise affect blood sugar levels Understand how other factors, such as illness or stress, affect blood sugar levels Identify blood sugar levels that are dangerously high or low At least 25 different meters are commercially available. They differ in several ways including: Amount of blood neede Continue reading >>

Freestyle Lite Blood Glucose Meter Review

Freestyle Lite Blood Glucose Meter Review

Out of all the blood glucose meters I have used as a type 1 diabetic, Abbott’s FreeStyle Lite blood glucose meter is my favorite. Throughout the years, I have also tried other meters, including the OneTouch Ultra 2. As a part of my FreeStyle Lite blood glucose meter review, I will compare the two meters, and see how their features stack up. Get the meter shipped right to your door! Compact meter size The Freestyle Lite is the smallest blood glucose meter I have ever owned. It fits in the palm of my hand so easily. Because of its small size, I have never dropped it on the floor. On the other hand, I have dropped one of my OneTouch Ultra 2s — it happened early in the morning before I had my coffee. That’s my excuse, anyway. My FreeStyle Lite is 1.57 inches wide and almost 3 inches long. Plus, the meter is only 0.65 inches deep. For me, its small size is a big selling point. FreeStyle Lite blood glucose meter dimensions: width: 1.57 inches length: 2.9 inches depth: 0.65 inches Amount of blood needed According to the owner’s manual, the FreeStyle Lite meter only needs 0.3 µL. That odd µL symbol stands for microlitre, or 0.000001 Litres. That is a tiny amount of blood. Lancet device The first time I used the FreeStyle Lite, I set the included lancing device to the “3” setting. The “4” setting is the deepest. When I pulled back the plunger and pushed the release button, I didn’t feel any pain. Did it work? Well, to be sure, I squeezed the tip of my finger, and I was surprised to see a small drop of blood. When I touched the blood to the side of the glucose test strip, it beeped and, within a few seconds, it gave me my blood sugar result. I was pleasantly surprised when the FreeStyle Lite actually gave me a reading, especially since I had such a tiny drop o Continue reading >>

Meters: Does Your Device Measure Up?

Meters: Does Your Device Measure Up?

Download our latest printable product listings. Think of picking out a blood glucose meter the same way you would choose a car. You might consider cost first and then compare features to narrow down your options until you find the one that works best for you. You may even be able to sit with a diabetes educator and look over a number of meters to get a feel for them, says Molly McElwee-Malloy, RN, CDE, CPT, patient care manager in diabetes education at the University of Virginia Health System and a spokeswoman for the American Association of Diabetes Educators. The main thing people think about is cost, she says. But I think you should [also] think about something that is really going to do the most work for you. If youre stumped by all of the features to consider, focus on five main factors: ease of use, size and shape, reimbursement, accuracy, and download ability. Meters are typically affordable (most are in the range of $10 to $50) and are often discounted or free with coupons. The real cost with testing your blood glucose comes with the strips, says McElwee-Malloy. Test strips retail for anywhere between less than 50cents and $2 a strip, depending on the technology, and that can get expensive if you check your blood glucose multiple times a day. The cost of diabetes has never been higher, says endocrinologist Timothy Bailey, MD, FACE, CPI, director of AMCR Institute in Escondido, California, and a clinical associate professor at the University of CaliforniaSan Diego School of Medicine. A good way to save? Call your insurance company to find out which meters and strips are preferred (typically listed on the companys formulary). The cost of preferred meters and test strips will be covered at the most benefit to you. You can still get a meter that is not preferred by Continue reading >>

How Accurate Are Blood Glucose Meters?

How Accurate Are Blood Glucose Meters?

If you have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, then you know how important it is to check your blood sugar, whether that’s with a CGM (continuous glucose meter) or the manual BGM (blood glucose meter). And when you are on one end of the spectrum, or just not convinced by your CGM number, you test with a blood glucose meter, right? But what if your BGM were inaccurate as well? Just how accurate is the quintessential diabetes management tool? An independent study by the Diabetes Technology Society of 18 popular FDA-approved blood glucose monitoring systems released last month found that only six tested meters recorded BGLs as consistently and dependably as laboratory tests. The six highest-functioning monitors reported results within 15 percent of laboratory tests taken for comparison 95 percent of the time. The other 12 meters were only on the mark between 71 and 92 percent of the time. While the deviation on the meters was sometimes minor, minor mistakes can eventually lead to big complications. The study used BGMs bought in retail locations and tested 1,035 people in three different laboratory locations. It was conducted by a team of researchers led by David C. Klonoff, MD, of the Diabetes Research Institute at San Mateo, Calif.-based Mills-Peninsula Medical Center and funded by Abbott Laboratories. The study was not isolated to people with T1D. Among those who participated in testing the BGMs, 370 people had T1D, while the others had T2D, pre-diabetes, or did not have diabetes at all. The meters tested were developed by Bayer, Roche, Arkray, Agametrix, Abbott, LifeScan, Prodigy, Omnis Health, HDI/Nipro, BioSense Medical, Diabetic Supply of Suncoast and Philsys, and they represented 90 percent of the meters available on the market from 2013 to 2015. The six meters that were Continue reading >>

Types Of Blood Glucose Meters

Types Of Blood Glucose Meters

RATE★★★★★ There are a number of blood glucose meters marketed in the US. All of them must meet the minimum standards set by the US FDA, which are based on standards set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Key features that you may want to consider and which differentiate different models, include2: Audio capability. Monitors with sound systems are suited to people who have vision problems or issues that make reading a screen difficult. Performance in low or high temperatures. Temperature is one of the factors that can affect the accuracy of test results. Some monitors are designed to perform better in high heat environments and others are designed to perform better in colder temperatures. Display lighting. Getting a screen that is backlit is a good idea, as this makes it easier to see the display in low light or dark. Memory. Different units have different size memory capabilities for storage of test results. Memory sizes range from units that store 100 readings to those with large memories that store up to 5,000 readings. Required blood drop size. Monitors differ in the amount of blood they require for testing from amounts as small as 0.3 microliters to as much as 1.5 microliters (see below for examples of blood drop sizes). Size and handling. The size and handling of a monitor is an important consideration that affect how easily you can transport your unit (whether you can carry it in your pocket or purse) and how easy it is to use. Monitoring units vary widely in the total size of the unit, the size of the display, how easy it is to operate (the size of buttons or switches), and whether the unit allows the use of an attached disk or drum of test strips to eliminate the need for inserting individual strips. Cost of test strips. The c Continue reading >>
