It is also more common in women of Hispanic, African-American, Native-American, Asian-American, Indigenous Australian, or a Pacific Islander descent. Factors that may increase the risk of gestational diabetes include: Obesity or being overweightThis can affect the body's ability to use insulin. Gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy Sleep-disordered breathingabnormal breathing during sleep ranging from snoring to sleep apnea Multiple pregnancycarrying 2 or more babies Also, hormones that help the baby's growth may interfere with insulin. This condition usually does not cause any symptoms. If symptoms do occur, they may include: As part of prenatal screening, you will be tested for gestational diabetes. If you don't have a history of diabetes, the test will be done at 24-28 weeks of gestation. If you have any risk factors, the test may be done earlier in pregnancy. Ever since my doctor's office called me with the test results, I've completely turned over a whole new leaf. I'm on a low carb. diet, and am now overall making much healthier decisions. I do have to check my blood sugar four times a day, and my fingers are really sore because of it, but it's worth it. I feel amazing, and I actually have a little bit more energy! My eating habits were really bad before, like, two boxes of fudge brownies, with frosting, a week and then fast food the rest of the time bad. It's no wonder I failed the glucose test miserably! Now I'm eating real well balanced meals, with healthy snacks, that don't consist of chocolate and potato chips, in between. I'm actually strongly considering continuing the low carb. thing even after the baby's born, and the GD goes away.
