Posted on October 1, 2012 by Alan L. Rubin, MD There is much controversy over the role of vitamin D in many diseases and conditions besides its effect on calcium intake and bone metabolism. This is a brief introduction to vitamin D. You can find much more concerning all aspects of vitamin D in my book Vitamin D for Dummies. First of all, vitamin D is not actually a vitamin, but rather a hormone. A vitamin is, by definition, a food substance that cannot be made in the body and must be taken in from an external source. In fact, the human body exposed to sunlight can make all the vitamin D it needs. Unfortunately, the fear of skin cancer has resulted in avoidance of sun exposure, so that many people must take a supplement to achieve the necessary vitamin D level. In the winter and above certain latitudes you get very little ultraviolet B light, the kind that makes vitamin D, so you have to take a supplement then as well. It is difficult to get enough vitamin D from food. Secondly, many conditions have been shown to be reduced in people who have adequate lifelong blood levels of vitamin D. They include the following: Infectious diseases: Tuberculosis, influenza, upper respiratory viruses Autoimmune diseases: Multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosis Heart disease: Coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, heart failure Metabolic disease: Types1 and 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome Other possible diseases prevented by adequate vitamin D: Asthma, psoriasis, autism, Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease, depression, seasonal affective disorder While the evidence for the role of vitamin D is stronger for some of these diseases than others, all of them are currently being studied to see if vitamin D can prevent their on Continue reading >>

The books have been translated into 16 languages and there are special editions for the UK, Canada and Australia. In May, 2017, I was awarded the Solomon A. Berson Alumni Achievement Award in Health Science, Medicine and the Arts for the medical For Dummies books I have written, by my medical school, New York University School of Medicine. Emerson has done a mostly fine job of following a regime that has kept his prediabetes under control and may, at some point, get his A1c back to that of a totally healthy person. However, theres one thing he wont tell you about, because he isnt doing it, and thats strength training. Im sorry about that, because my husbands prediabetes has totally changed my attitude about lifting weights. The truth is, I love it. Probably just about anything youve read about treating prediabetes mentions the need to do some sort of strength training. Not only does it increase insulin sensitivity, but it helps to burn more calories for weight loss. The reasons people dont do it are also myriad. They dont want to look bulky. You sweat a lot. It hurts. Its boring. And, you probably should go to a gym, with all that entails, from cost to having to deal with younger and fitter people. And, thats just for starters. I wasnt thinking at all about prediabetes when I started lifting almost 10 years ago. However, as I hit and then passed 50, I got tired of reading that people lose 1% of their muscle mass annually after that birthday. And, with a mother crippled by osteoporosis, I knew the best way to build and maintain bone density is weight-bearing exercise. Still, I kept putting it off for a lot of the reasons listed above. Then, I stumbled upon a program put out by Tufts University and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) entitled Growing Stronger: Strength Training for Older Adults. At the time, I liked the idea that it was designed for we older people, so I ordered a copy, bought myself a set of 5 lbs. weights, ankle weights, a yoga mat and a step, and started working out two mornings a week behind the closed door of my office.
