Rediff.com Getahead 5 steps to control your blood sugar Last updated on: November 06, 201413:22 IST India has the highest number of diabetics and pre-diabetics, than any other country in the world. This is not a coincidence. Indians and south Asians are genetically more prone to diabetes. Further, general lifestyles are becoming more sedentary, and our diets contain more sugar and processed foods like Maida, than before. This form of diabetes that is acquired from lifestyle is known as Type 2 diabetes. The good news is that Type 2 diabetes can be managed, if you take the correct precautions, and even cured in many cases of pre-diabetes. If you do not have diabetes, then you can significantly reduce your risk of acquiring diabetes in your life, by following the correct lifestyle of diet and exercise. Here are 5 simple and important steps to control your blood sugar, and live healthier: The obvious sugar in your diet includes desserts, sweets, chocolates, most packaged juices and the sugar you add to your tea. Finding that kind of sugar is easy. The challenge is to overcome your will power to consume sugary food. Excess sugar can wreak havoc in your body -- weight gain, diabetes, imbalance of hormones and much more. So, to control your intake of excess sugar, our tip is that you think about the kind of damage it can do to your body. One tip to replace sugar cravings -- is to drink a glass of water, and to keep almonds close by. The texture of almonds, combined with their nutrition can help in overcoming sugar cravings. After sugar, the next food to avoid is Maida. Maida is processed wheat that contains negligible nutrition & has a high glycemic index, which is almost the same as sugar. So, while Maida does not taste sweet, it raises your blood sugar levels as sugar does. Continue reading >>

Quick Tips Portion Decrease sizes - Take lesser amount of the foods that you had been taking earlier Add Guargum powder to atta mixture; Add fibre like Isabghula to the atta mixture for making dough Add methi ( Fenugreek seeds to your preparations). Methi seeds have been used to treat Diabetes since this diseases is known, it was used by the greeks, offcourse in Ayurved and by the ancient chinese healers. Soak 15- 25 grams of fenugreek seeds in water overnight, grind them into fine paste and add to dough for making roti, paratha, in curries, subzi daal etc. Increase Dietary Fibre- Fibres are poorly absorbed Carbohydrates so they prolong the absorption of sugar and do not cause steep rise in sugar levels (fresh leafy Vegetables, whole grains, bran rich wheat flour). Atta (Wheat Flour) Mixture:- Its best to make an mixture of Atta ( coarse wheat flour) 1/2 , and distribute all other ingredients except Isapghula equally -Channa flour ( gram flour), Soya flour and add 1 tbspn of Isapghula powder, make Roti's or parathas from this mixture. This is what missi roti is made of and its quite tasty. Do not overcook your food- parboiled, semi cooked food would have a lower Glycemic index than the same with more processing.Prefer long grain rice like Basmati, it has lower glycemic index due to the type of starch contained in it- to short grained or broken riceSugars, Jaggery, Maida ( fine flour as used in bakery, pancakes etc, Sooji - semolina). They are quickly absorbed and cause immediate rise in blood glucose levels( Gujjiya, Mutthi, Sev, Samosa, Halwa, Upma etc.).Refined Carbohydrates ( Foods with high glycemic index) Most of the damage to different organs in the body is caused by peaks of blood glucose levels happening after meals due to insufficient secretion of insulin. Review On Ashwini Premium Diabetic Aata - Aswini Atta - A Must Have In Everyone's Diet - Mouthshut.com

For a long time, I have been searching for a flour to prepare roti's or chappati's at home for helping those in my family with pre-diabetic symptoms & also those with diabetes. Now a days, with such a lot of impurities in many food items people are developing various health issues including diabetes which is on the rise. But none of the major brands in the market seem to cater to the needs of diabetic patients except two brands Aswini & Jiwa. Even Non-diabetic people can have it. Aswini is reasonable priced compared to JIWA brand which is double the price of Aswini atta. Recently, I came across this brand, Aswini which is sold at very few select outlets in the Mumbai city.It is easily available in Hyderabad & Bangalore but not that easily available in all grocery stores in Mumbai. In Mumbai, I have seen this product being sold only in Food bazaar in 247 park in Vikhroli & also in Neptune mall in Bhandup.A 1kg packet of this fibre filled flour is worth INR.52 & some places after discount INR.40.I have made dosas, chappati & aloo paratha with this product. Diabetic people need more of calcium, iron & loads of fibre in their diet on a daily basis for getting better or at least keeping the sugar in control & keeping energy levels high which I have experienced with Aswini Diabetic Atta. It is composed of various mix of cereals & fibres, soya, sprouted millet & there is also Isabgol for constipation problems as well. From my experience, this roti after preparation is not very soft like ashirwad & other ordinary attas. It becomes a little hard & an intake of 3 or 4 chappati's makes you feel stuffed like jowar & Bajra roti's.
