[evaluation Of Nopal Capsules In Diabetes Mellitus].

Abstract To find out if commercial capsules with dried nopal (prickle-pear cactus, Opuntia ficus indica may have a role in the management of diabetes mellitus, three experiments were performed: 30 capsules where given in fasting condition to 10 diabetic subjects and serum glucose was measured through out 3 hours; a control test was performed with 30 placebo capsules. OGTT with previous intake of 30 nopal or placebo capsules was performed in ten healthy individuals. In a crossover and single blinded study 14 diabetic patients withdrew the oral hypoglycemic treatment and received 10 nopal or placebo capsules t.i.d. during one week; serum glucose, cholesterol and tryglycerides levels were measured before and after each one-week period. Five healthy subjects were also studied in the same fashion. Opuntia capsules did not show acute hypoglycemic effect and did not influence OGTT. In diabetic patients serum glucose, cholesterol and tryglycerides levels did not change with Opuntia, but they increased with placebo (P < 0.01 glucose and cholesterol, P = NS triglycerides). In healthy individuals glycemia did not change with nopal, while cholesterol and triglycerides decreased (P < 0.01 vs. placebo). The intake of 30 Opuntia capsules daily in patients with diabetes mellitus had a discrete beneficial effect on glucose and cholesterol. However this dose is unpractical and at present it is not recommended in the management of diabetes mellitus. Continue reading >>

Detox Cactus Smoothie

Detox Cactus Smoothie

You are here: Home / drinks / Detox Cactus Smoothie This detox cactus smoothie is creamy, with a lot of tropical zing. Healthy and very simple to make. It is highly irresistible and tastes just like the cactus smoothie from Crusssh juice bar. Despite popular belief, I am not all chocolate, bread and sweets. I have an intense fondness for smoothies. Detox cactus smoothies, in particular. When I stumbled upon cactus leaves at my local produce store, I knew I had to share this delicious drink with you. I first discovered cactus smoothies in college (Ive been coming up with a lot of college stories lately, havent I?) While on a hunt for chocolate in a train station. I came across this little place called Crusssh who happened to sell these awesome vegan double chocolate brownies (whaat?!). I also saw a sign that announced they were bringing back cactus smoothies. Now, at that time, I never heard of using cactus for anything other than decoration, so I was intrigued and bought one. My life was changed from that point on. How can I describe the amazingness that is the detox cactus smoothie? It is light, creamy, but tangy at the same time. Yes, tangy and sweet and kind-of tropical in the best way possible. There are only a few ingredients in this smoothie, but the complexity of the flavor is simply irresistible and even addictive. When I discovered Crussh detox cactus smoothies , I would buy a large one to drink right away, and buy another two or three to take with me to drink later. Seriously, I was addicted. I introduced my friend Erin to the smoothie and she drank hers in 10 minutes and we had to turn right around to get another. It was that good. Besides the cactus, which I am sure you can also find at your produce store, everything is easy to find. Their smoothie is a lot Continue reading >>

Can Prickly Pear Cactus Juice Cure Diabetes?

Can Prickly Pear Cactus Juice Cure Diabetes?

Could the answer to preventing, controlling and reversing your type 2 diabetes be found in the juice of a common cactus? The Opuntia Ficus-Indica is known as the Nopal cactus but is most commonly referred to as the prickly pear cactus. Nopal grows wild and abundant in desert climates such as Mexico, Arizona, New Mexico and Southern California. Prickly pear cactus juice has been used medicinally for hundreds of years in Latin folk medicine and by southwestern Native American cultures. Its high levels of insoluble fiber help ward off diabetes. The fiber found in the flesh of the cactus slows the rate at which your body absorbs sugar, thereby keeping your glucose levels steady. Instead of sugar rapidly entering your bloodstream and causing insulin to spike, the juice of the prickly pear cactus acts as a gatekeeper by slowing down the absorption of sugar and naturally lowering your risk of diabetes. If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, the prickly pear cactus juice can still help control symptoms by lowering your blood glucose levels. Six different medical studies have proven that eating broiled prickly pear cactus reduced glucose levels between 10 to 30mg/dl in as little as 30 minutes to three hours. Nopal provides a true positive metabolic effect and a natural way for type II diabetic patients to possibly avoid diabetes medication, control blood sugar with diet alone, and avoid negative side effects. Type 2 diabetes is 100% preventable. If you already have diabetes, it is 100% reversible. Prickly Pear Packed with Vitamin C & Even Lowers Cholesterol Prickly pear cactus juice is extremely high in vitamin C – as well as vitamins E and A, iron, calcium, carotenoids and quercitin. The combination of antioxidants found in the plant work more efficiently than vitamin C do Continue reading >>

Cactus Banana Smoothie (or Licuado De Nopal Con Pltano)

My dad is a diabetic, and he loves to eat his nopales, or cactus. Not because hes Mexican but because they are good for regulating blood sugar. Me? Im about to say something that will make people questions whether Im a real Mexican or not. Im not a big nopales fan. For those of you who are confused.. In Mexico, we have a saying: Youre so Mexican that you even have a nopal on your forehead. Sounds weird, I know. Like supersized meals arent weird?! Doesnt matter what I think about nopales. They taste great in this Cactus Banana Smoothie, or Licuado de Nopal con Pltano. Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. North of the border, nopales arent very well known. At the grocery store by my dads house in Mexico, there is even a lady who stands at the nopal station and cleans the spikes off the cactus. Here in the US, I am lucky to find them like this, without the spikes and ready to be sliced and cooked. Sometimes, I find them in a bag, diced, ready to hit the pan, but they are more expensive. So, I buy them like this. If you cant find them where youre at: BUY ONLINE From here, I slice them and dice them. Warning if this is the first time youre using nopales: They are a little slimy. Ground cinnamon also goes into this diabetic-friendly licuado (or smoothie). Cinnamon is excellent for regulating blood sugar. People will tell you that bananas are not good for diabetics. Thats an old myth that needs to die! Under ripened bananas actually help blood sugar. FYI: One small, ripe banana has always been allowed in the diabetic diet. Add all the ingredients to a blender The best way to get me to eat nopales is in a licuado, or smoothie. This Cactus Banana Smoothie, or Licuado de Nopal con Pltano, is creamy and delicious! Its a different and yummy way to use nopales. Plus, you Continue reading >>

I've seen prickly pear cactus promoted as a superfood. What's behind the hype? Answers from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D. Prickly pear cactus, also called nopal, is promoted for treating diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity and hangovers. It is also touted for its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Some preliminary evidence shows that prickly pear cactus can decrease blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Research also suggests that prickly pear cactus extract may lessen the unpleasant effects of a hangover. However, more research is needed to confirm these benefits. It's too early to call prickly pear cactus a superfood, but it can be part of a healthy diet. Indeed, prickly pear cactus is popular in many areas of the world, particularly Latin America, because it's high in fiber, antioxidants and carotenoids. The edible parts are the leaves, flowers, stems and fruit. Prickly pear cactus is eaten whole (boiled or grilled). It is also made into juice and jams. If you'd like to try prickly pear cactus, consider easing into it. Side effects for some people include mild diarrhea, nausea, increased stool volume, increased stool frequency and abdominal fullness. Continue reading >>
