Diabetes Type 2
Many people with type 2 diabetes are prescribed tablets to help control their blood glucose levels. Metformin is the first-line medication for diabetes in the UK but there are many more types of medication for type 2 diabetes discussed below. Most people had tried initially to control their blood glucose with a regimen of diet and exercise before being given oral medication. Many people took metformin alone to control blood glucose, and some were taking metformin and gliclazide. Both medications help to reduce blood glucose but work differently. Metformin reduces the amount of glucose produced in the liver, and also makes muscle tissue absorb more glucose; gliclazide increases the amount of insulin produced by the pancreas. While people found that the medication they took had helped reduce and control their blood glucose, many had experienced side effects. Metformin can cause diarrhoea and other digestive problems and many people went back to their GPs for advice. Some people felt concerned about the risks they might face from certain drugs after reading negative reports in the media (see 'Misunderstandings about diabetes'). Rosiglitazone has been linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Since these interviews were conducted in 2008, there has been growing concern about the potential harmful effects of rosiglitazone (Avandia, but also contained in Avandamet and Avaglim) and from September 2010 in the UK and Europe, new prescribing of this drug has stopped, and most people who were taking the drug have been changed to alternative medication. Most people we interviewed had been prescribed higher dosages of medication to control their blood glucose as their diabetes got worse over time. Some people had transferred to insulin while continuing on metformin (se Continue reading >>

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a leading cause of infertility. We studied the rheological properties of cervical-vaginal secretions in five PCOS patients during variable treatment intervals with metformin. Five ovulatory normal women for a total of thirteen cycles served as control patients. All subjects collected daily cervical-vaginal fluid(CVF) samples with an aspirator, and CVF samples were characterized by a flow metric, die swell ratio (B), which measured CVF elasticity. Ovulatory cycles were indexed to the day of positive urine or serum LH (luteinizing hormone). CVF B levels from ovulatory normal women had a characteristic concave parabolic pattern of a minimum near the day of ovulation with higher values outside the periovulatory phase. In contrast, the five PCOS patients with or without metformin treatment had no periodicity of CVF B, and their CVF B levels were typically less compared to those in the early preovulatory and luteal phases of normal pa Continue reading >>

(How to use Glycomet Tablet in Hindi) , 500 MG (How Glycomet Tablet works in Hindi) 500 MG , Q. Is Glycomet helpful in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)? Yes. Glycomet is helpful in patients with PCOS. It may be used along with other medicines to induce ovulation and regularize menstrual cycles. It also delays the development of type 2 diabetes if you already have prediabetes and aids in weight loss if you follow a diet and exercise program. Q. How does Glycomet help in weight loss? Glycomet helps in weight loss by decreasing hunger (appetite) and hence food intake. It makes the insulin already available in your body to work more effectively. This leads to decrease glucose production, increase glucose use and decreased fat deposits which further helps to lower body weight. However, it is not yet approved for weight loss, this is an off-label use. Q. Is Glycomet useful in the treatment of infertility? Glycomet is commonly used off-label for the treatment of infertility associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It regulates ovulation and androgen levels in the body and improves menstrual regularity and pregnancy rates and outcomes. This beneficial effect is thought to be due to improvement in insulin resistance by Glycomet. Q. Does Glycomet cause low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia)? Glycomet can lower blood sugar level (hypoglycemia). It happens more often if you delay or miss your food, do more than your routine exercise, drink alcohol or take other antidiabetic medicine along with. So, regular monitoring of blood sugar level is important and be cautious of symptoms of hypoglycemia and always keep glucose tablets, honey or fruit juice with you. Glycomet is generally a safe and well-tolerated drug even on long-term use. However, its long-term use Continue reading >>

Differences Between Metformin And Sr Metformin
Diabetes Forum The Global Diabetes Community Find support, ask questions and share your experiences. Join the community Differences between Metformin and SR Metformin Hi, I'm thinking of asking the doctor to change me to SR Metformin because after almost a year on it I am still suffering the side effects - to the extent of I end up taking immodium maybe once a week, and the rest of the week I'm quite paranoid about what I eat (I feel like I've got IBS, which started at the same time as the Metformin  , and having read the IBS website I do have a lot of the symptoms). I've persevered for so long as the fact I can't eat a lot of the unhealthy foods due to this has made it easier for me to give up pizzas, fizzy drinks, spicy foods, regular bread etc and helped me lose a little weight. However, it does impact on life somewhat, I don't like going for long visits to friends houses in case I am ill, if I am going on a day out somewhere I don't want to eat/drink much, and when we moved offices I had to cut my water consumption right down to try and balance out the effect of the metformin (the bathroom was 5mins away, upstairs). I've got a couple of questions about the SR Metformin which I'm hoping someone who takes them can answer (as opposed to the doctor's answer, which isn't based on personal experience). 1) Are the pills any bigger than the Metformin ones? I already have trouble swallowing those sometimes, so if they are bigger I might have to forget that idea. 2) Do they still have the welcome side effect of reducing your appetite? 3) Does it take long to get used to them (especially if you are switching from Metformin/other medication already taken)? PurpleKat, I've always had a fast digestive system and metformin made it worse. I've found since cutting out wheat f Continue reading >>

Vildagliptin. Vildagliptin For Diabetes Treatment | Patient
Galvus; Eucreas (a combination tablet containing vildagliptin with metformin) Insulin is a hormone which is made naturally in your body, in the pancreas. It helps to control the levels of sugar (glucose) in your blood. If your body does not make enough insulin, or if it does not use the insulin it makes effectively, this results in the condition called sugar diabetes (diabetes mellitus). People with diabetes need treatment to control the amount of sugar in their blood. This is because good control of blood sugar levels reduces the risk of complications later on. Some people can control the sugar in their blood by making changes to the food they eat but, for other people, medicines like vildagliptin are given alongside the changes in diet. Vildagliptin works in part by increasing the amount of insulin produced by your body. It also reduces the amount of a substance called glucagon being produced by your pancreas. Glucagon causes your liver to produce more sugar, so by reducing the amount of glucagon in your body, this also helps to reduce the levels of sugar in your blood. Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine may only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start taking vildagliptin it is important that your doctor knows: If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breastfeeding. If you have any problems with the way your liver works, or with the way your kidneys work. If you have a condition where your heart is not working as well as it should, known as heart failure. If you are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, as well as herbal and complementary medicines. If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a med Continue reading >>

Glipizide-metformin
Uses This diabetes medication is a combination of 2 drugs (glipizide and metformin). It is used along with a diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. Glipizide is a sulfonylurea and works by stimulating the release of your body's natural insulin and by decreasing the amount of sugar that your liver makes. Metformin is a biguanide and works by decreasing the amount of sugar that your liver makes and that your stomach/intestines absorb. Both of these medications work by helping to restore your body's proper response to the insulin you naturally produce. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke. How to use Glipizide-Metformin Read the Patient Information Leaflet available from your pharmacist before you start using this medication and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Take this medication by mouth, usually once or twice a day with meals or as directed by your doctor. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products). To reduce your risk of side effects (such as upset stomach), your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully. If you are already taking another diabetes drug (e.g., chlorpropamide), follow your docto Continue reading >>

Metformin
Metformin, marketed under the trade name Glucophage among others, is the first-line medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes,[4][5] particularly in people who are overweight.[6] It is also used in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome.[4] Limited evidence suggests metformin may prevent the cardiovascular disease and cancer complications of diabetes.[7][8] It is not associated with weight gain.[8] It is taken by mouth.[4] Metformin is generally well tolerated.[9] Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea and abdominal pain.[4] It has a low risk of causing low blood sugar.[4] High blood lactic acid level is a concern if the medication is prescribed inappropriately and in overly large doses.[10] It should not be used in those with significant liver disease or kidney problems.[4] While no clear harm comes from use during pregnancy, insulin is generally preferred for gestational diabetes.[4][11] Metformin is in the biguanide class.[4] It works by decreasing glucose production by the liver and increasing the insulin sensitivity of body tissues.[4] Metformin was discovered in 1922.[12] French physician Jean Sterne began study in humans in the 1950s.[12] It was introduced as a medication in France in 1957 and the United States in 1995.[4][13] It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system.[14] Metformin is believed to be the most widely used medication for diabetes which is taken by mouth.[12] It is available as a generic medication.[4] The wholesale price in the developed world is between 0.21 and 5.55 USD per month as of 2014.[15] In the United States, it costs 5 to 25 USD per month.[4] Medical uses[edit] Metformin is primarily used for type 2 diabetes, but is increasingly be Continue reading >>

Metformin Overview
Metformin is a prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. Metformin belongs to a group of drugs called biguanides, which work by helping your body respond better to the insulin it makes naturally, decreasing the amount of sugar your liver makes, and decreasing the amount of sugar your intestines absorb. This medication comes in tablet, extended-release tablet, and liquid forms. It is taken up to 3 times daily, depending on which form you are taking. Swallow extended-release tablets whole. Common side effects of metformin include diarrhea, nausea, and upset stomach. Metformin is a prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. This medication may be prescribed for other uses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Metformin may be found in some form under the following brand names: Serious side effects have been reported including: Lactic Acidosis. In rare cases, metformin can cause a serious side effect called lactic acidosis. This is caused by a buildup of lactic acid in your blood. This build-up can cause serious damage. Lactic acidosis caused by metformin is rare and has occurred mostly in people whose kidneys were not working normally. Lactic acidosis has been reported in about one in 33,000 patients taking metformin over the course of a year. Although rare, if lactic acidosis does occur, it can be fatal in up to half the people who develop it. It is also important for your liver to be working normally when you take metformin. Your liver helps remove lactic acid from your blood. Make sure you tell your doctor before you use metformin if you have kidney or liver problems. You should also stop using metformin and call your doctor right away if you have signs of lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a medical emergency that must be treate Continue reading >>

Kilalanin Natin Ang Metformin
By dokbru in Diabetes on August 31, 2015 Ang Metformin ay gamot para sa diabetes.

What Is The Meaning Of The Terms "sustained Release" And "prolonged Release" Used As A Suffix In Some Medicines (tablets)?
Sustained release is a type of dosage form which is designed to release a drug at a predetermined rate in order to maintain a constant drug concentration for a specific period of time with minimum side effects. Sustained release's definition is more akin to a "controlled release" rather than "sustained". It denotes a drug preparation in a capsule containing numerous tiny pellets with different coatings that release their contents steadily over a long period. Sustained Release and Prolonged Release are same and can be used interchangeably. 11.3k Views View Upvoters Answer requested by the terms sustained release and prolonged release are used interchangeably. it is a type or method of controlled release. it is the method applied to drug for its release in controlled manner that is either release only at specific sites or release into the circulation from git after some time, so that immediate rise of drug concentration wont occur and prolonged nd slow release will occur this method of sustained or prolonge release of drug into body is useful when a disease condition doesnot need immediate rise of concentration of drug in the blood, or when the drug is to be released slowly so that the steadystate concentration (the minimum stable concentration of drug in the blood) is maintained for prolonged period of time which inturn decreases dosing frequency . 4.8k Views View Upvoters Answer requested by Continue reading >>
