So I've been looking into calcium lately and in particular the additional benefits of the form from algae, I actually got a bottle of this stuff thrown in with my last Vitacost order for no reason, and they generally don't give stuff away worth $35, but anyway, I thought well I've never tried this, and don't pay enough attention to calcium, and this stuff is clearly superior to the coral calcium I take off and on so let's look into this more. Calcium does play a significant role in diabetes but it's not one of the things that gets talked about much. A lot of people assume they get enough from dairy products and I sure did as well until I found out a little while back that dairy products actually cause a net loss of calcium, due to the lactic acid content. This often happens when we eat or drink. The natural response is to cough—but mineral oil soothes the throat and calms the cough reflex. Result: Particles of oil stay in the lungs and cause irritation that can lead to pneumonia. The symptoms include a persistent cough or difficulty breathing…and the irritation can increase your risk for a bacterial infection in addition to pneumonia. To be safe: Don’t exceed the recommended dose of one to three tablespoons daily. The more you take, the more you increase your risk for aspirating some of the oil. Also important: Don’t swallow mineral oil when you’re lying down—it’s more likely to get into the lungs. B12-intrinsic factor complex uptake by ileal cell surface receptors is known to be a process dependent on calcium availability Metformin affects calcium-dependent membrane action. The objective of this study was to determine the magnitude and mechanism of the reduction in serum vitamin B12 after metformin administration. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A comparative study design was employed using 2 groups (metformin and control). A total of 21 patients with type 2 diabetes received sulfonylurea therapy; 14 of these 21 patients were switched to metformin. Monthly serum total vitamin B12 measurements and holotranscobalamin (holoTCII) (B12-TCII) were performed. After 3 months of metformin therapy, oral calcium supplementation was administered. RESULTS: Serial serum vitamin B12 determinations revealed a similar decline in vitamin B12 and holoTCII. Oral calcium supplementation reversed the metformin-induced serum holoTCII depression. CONCLUSIONS: Patients receiving metformin have diminished B12 absorption and low serum total vitamin B12 and TCII-B12 levels because of a calcium-dependent ileal membrane antagonism, an effect reversed with supplemental calcium.
