Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding Following Pharmacist Prescribing Of Metformin Leads To The Detection Of Complex Endometrial Hyperplasia.
Ann Pharmacother. 2013 Nov;47(11):1581-3. doi: 10.1177/1060028013504385. Abnormal vaginal bleeding following pharmacist prescribing of metformin leads to the detection of complex endometrial hyperplasia. University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. To describe a case where pharmacist prescribing of metformin therapy resulted in unexplained vaginal bleeding in a patient later diagnosed with complex endometrial hyperplasia. A 57-year-old woman with diagnoses of hypertension and dyslipidemia was assessed by a pharmacist with prescribing authorization for hypertension management. Cardiovascular risk assessment performed by the pharmacist resulted in the detection of metabolic syndrome confirmed by the patient's physician. The pharmacist prescribed metformin 500 mg twice daily for prediabetes and metabolic syndrome, resulting in vaginal bleeding 1 week following initiation of therapy. Bleeding stopped following discontinuation of metformin, and recurred on retrial. The symptoms were dose dependent as bleeding did not occur at a dose of 500 mg once daily, but recurred at a total dose of 1000 mg/d. The patient was referred for physical examination and endometrial ultrasound and sampling, and was found to have complex endometrial hyperplasia. Metformin is widely used for the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome as it improves ovulation and menstrual cycle regularity. In this case, the patient was not known to have polycystic ovary syndrome but was instead provided metformin for metabolic syndrome and hyperinsulinemia. It is believed that metformin's endocrine effects resulted in the sloughing of this hyperplastic tissue, prompting the pharmacist to refer the patient for medical assessment. This case is unique as it is the first of our knowledge to report a scenario wher Continue reading >>
Abnormal Brown Bleeding But On The Pill And Metformin.
Abnormal brown bleeding but on the pill and metformin. I have been on metformin for 6 months now and have been on cerelle pill for years. I missed my metformin for 5 days due to not picking up prescription...started the metformin again on Thursday last week, then on Sunday afternoon I had an outburst of very dark blood in my knickers and it has carried on ever since, been 4 days now. I have been to my GP and screened for infection and refererrd for Ultrasound, also had preg test which was negative. I just wanted to know if anyone has ever had this issue before? Appreciate your thoughts! Pcos And Problems With My Cycle, Starting Metformin
PCOS and problems with my cycle, starting metformin i have PCOS and i had regular cycles until i started trying fo a baby lol just my luck. i was told i had PCOS when i was 15 im now fast approaching 26. my july and august periods have been more like a brown discharge than a proper period. my doctor has been trying to put me on Metformin but i have always said no as i was regular cycle.now i am seriously considering going on it and ive got a few questions about it. 1. how long after taking it did you get your period? 3. how long were you on it before you got pregnant? 4. is it true it increases the chance of a multiple pregnancy? was just about to post this so u saved me the trouble. I have no idea either and would like some help from people who know! i have not been diagnosed with pcos but they wont give me clomid till i have a USscan, which will be nxt week. im startin my metformin to moz. im gonna stalk this thread if its ok with u as i too need answers xxx Make sure you have insulin resistance PCOS before taking it. (not just hormone imbalance PCOS). Metformin actually doesnt help you ovulate. It is given to you to help with your blood sugar levels (hense why you should only take it if you have IR-PCOS). Fixing your sugar levels then helps you lose weight which should cause your body to ovulate, which then would cause you to have periods Metformin does not cause multiple births, that would be Clomid that can cause that. hey thanks for your replys, with my doctor wanting to put me on it i would say that i have insulin resistance. got some of the symtoms of my PCOS back not had them in ages, getting me down as its only started since TTC I took it a couple of years ago - but it made me soooo ill I couldn't keep taking it - I know it does help a lot of people control t Continue reading >>
Brown Discharge? - Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (pcos) - Medhelp
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) Community I have this brown discharge, maybe with a hint of pink in it, and it only shows up when I wipe. I haven't been wearing a liner or anything and it hasn't gotten on my panties, so I don't know what to think of it. I've never, ever had brown discharge before. A little bit of my history... I have (undiagnosed) PCOS, so I have REALLY irregular periods and no ovulation. This has been going on for about 3 1/2 years now. My LMP was August 11, 2011, so if this were to be a regular cycle, I'd be 3 weeks late as of yesterday (October 1st). I tried an HPT on the 17th when I was a week late and it was negative. I know odd things like spotting are common with women who have messed up cycles, but I wasn't kidding when I said I never, ever had brown discharge before. My periods have always been an all or nothing sort of deal; when it starts, it starts and it doesn't stop until it's done. Even since I've had issues with my cycles. What I think is that I tested too soon and am either pregnant at last (yay!) or something is wrong (not yay). The only reason I'm asking for opinions is because I'm inexperienced when it comes to identifying a pregnancy. It certainly would explain the weird "full" feeling I have in my lower abdomen, though... So... if you're just going to tell me to see my doctor, you might as well save it because I don't have one right now. Otherwise, feel free to comment. i have the same thing i am only 16 years old i have pcos and when i whipe i have brow discharge this has been going on for three weeks and i have cyst on my ovaries hopefully my doctors figure out whats going on because at this age i dont need this in my life.I have started my period and its not regular i havent had my period in like 9 months i am not pregnant a Continue reading >>
Pcos Complications While On Metformin, Implantation Bleeding, Or Pregnant?
Hello. I've been diagnosed with PCOS 10yrs ago. I have hairitsm, weight gain, unbalanced hormones, and multiple ovarian cysts. I was advised to take Metformin to better my chances for pregnacy. I would try to take the meds for about 3 days and stopped because of the side effects. I worked around too many people to be passing wind or being on the toilet on a consistent basis. Throughout the years, I've tried loosing weight, herbal-all natural meds (made me have a period but didn't correct my problem), and somewhat changed my eating habbits. My period would come for 3 months at a time consecutively, and then disappear for another 3 months. I would experience brown spotting from time to time during my off months. Last year, my old GYN told me I was "fully blown" PCOS- meaning the multiple cysts on my ovaries were large.. but he didn't do a blood test. I got married this year and my husband and I are TTC. I changed doctors. I work from home now (for the same company) so I started taking Metformin and prenatal vitamins towards the end of July. In August my current doctor advised me my blood test came back normal including my DHEA levels. I asked to him to do a total count of my testosterone because I still have hair growing on my face and shave like a man every other day. My blood results shows my total count of testosterone was still higher than normal but not as usual. My transvaginal ultrasound came back with me having a mild case of PCOS (only a few but very small cysts).. Finally, my period came down (heavy and clotty) on Sept 15th. I starting spotting brown on Oct 5th (still taking Metformin and prenatal vitamins) but this time I had a streak of blood too. I had an appointment with my Internal Med Dr the next day. I told her about the spotting and she advised me of Imp Continue reading >>

Starting metformin may have been the thing that tipped it over the edge, but it may not be the cause of the issue. Cerazette is one option for treating heavy bleeding but I wonder if your doctor(s) have considered what is causing the heavy bleeding. I don't know how old you are - some conditions are more likely at a younger age, others in women over 35. It's possible that cerazette is no longer enough to control the heavy bleeding and other options might be needed. Did you have much pain with the heavy bleeding? Metformin And Spotting??? - Pcosupport Community Forums
New registrations on this site have been temporarily suspended due to spam attacks on the site. We apologize to new users, and we will announce when new user registrations have been restored. We apologize for any inconvenience.PCOSupport I have PCOS and I've recently been prescribed Metformin by my doctor because I haven't had a normal period in 3 years (I usually have a period about 3 or 4 times a year if I'm lucky). I've taken Metformin for about a month now, starting in January. I finished my dosage (500 mg per day), but I did not get my period. About a week ago, I went for my physical and my doctor gave me another prescription for this month, February. He said it was too early to tell if I was ovulating or not. I haven't had a chance to get the Metformin from the pharmacy yet, so as of now, I am not currently taking anything. I noticed that near the end of last month's dosage, I started spotting a little, and it was brown blood, not red. Now, two weeks after I finished my January dosage, I've noticed that I've been having a discharge, a mucus with brown blood. I don't really know what's going on because my periods usually aren't mucus-y and it's never brown spotting. Today, I had really bad cramping near my ovaries, but the spotting stopped. The spotting usually just lasts about a day and then the spotting is done for the next week or so, then it starts up again. What do I do and is something wrong with me??? Is it the Metformin? or is it me? Continue reading >>
Anyone With Pcos? Clomid/metformin Baby?
I just got my BFP last week after a round of clomid along with metformin. I have PCOS and have been struggling to get my body to ovulate for 10 months. Finally did and got pregnant on first ovulatory cycle. Confirmed with beta at 218 on Thursday and go in again Monday to check for doubling. Feel so lucky but so worried and cautious as well! Anyone out there going through the same? Hardly any symptoms for me so far which makes me feel even more cautious; plus some brown spotting during wiping almost daily at some point in the day. Doctor says not to worry about that but it's hard not to! Would love to chat with someone In the same process. According to this app I'm 4w4d today! :) I at 38 yrs old and have PCOS. I have started taking metformin for a while. This month, I noticed that I had a brown discharge when I would wipe myself after using the washroom. It lasted for three days. Have any of you have this happen? What is the meaning of it? Also I had cervical mucus with a line of blood, is that anything to worry about? by TTCnumber2at42 Fri Jun 08, 2012 4:48 am Me 42 in September 2012 ~DH 35 in June 2012 ~DS 2 in July 2012 I am not sure because I haven't had my periods since March. Have you tested Tasha? If not, I would. I too am taking Metformin, and have not gotten my period since 5/8/2012. I am way late. I have a 28 day cycle. I've had odd things happen like having ovulation strips show really bright positive on day 31 and 32 of my cycle. I also had two weird hpt's. I have since went to my RE who performed a blood pregnancy test today. If I were you hon, I would test, and visit my obgyn, or RE. Good luck, and baby dust! Thanks Cortney! I have an appointment on Monday. To add to all the equation, I have been nauseous in the morning at least 3 times a week and some food I love is totally off for me. I really hope it is what I am wishing for because those hpts are not doing the thing for me, I did a clearblue test and had a ultra faint line and then did more hpts of differents brands and it was negative. I was crushed. Hopefully the blood test will be a blessing. Baby dust to you, keep me posted about your results!! Thanks a bunch! Continue reading >>

Metformin, Dianette, Yasmin, Clomid, Herbals, Yoga, Acupuncture, Oils, etc Moderators: thebuzz, Northfifer, Sammi, Hols969, DawnyB, purplestar, loachy, Mrs Wilko, Lutzomyia I'll admit I've been a bit lax about taking my metformin in the past and without it, my cycles are 50-60 or so days apart with periods that are light, but longish. I've been making more of an effort to take it over the last couple of months. I'm lucky in that I don't really have dodgy tummy side effects, but what I have noticed over the past couple of weeks is that i'm getting a lot of spotting - but it's brown, old blood. I've googled this side effect and some people seem to experience it but I'm still not sure if this is normal. Does anyone know if this is the case? I have read that it takes six or so months for Metformin to work properly, is the spotting likely to die down? It's not the most pleasant of side effects, unfortunately! I was discharged from my PCOS clinic a while back so can't ask them too easily. I'm a bit baffled by spotting on Metformin as well. My periods are normally 33-35 days, first 2-3 days really heavy then tapers off (sorry if tmi ). I was prescribed metformin to see if it would help me to stop spotting for 7-8 days before my period, as doc said it was probably due to my weight (bmi28). So I've been eating better and exercising more as well. I've been on metformin for 6 weeks now, got up to full dose after first week. Had some side effects, but nothing too bad. I feel like I've gone backwards from having a period pretty regularly to sitting on an up till now 6 week cycle, constantly spotting (mix of brown/red/pink) and bfn too! I've read that some people find it works for them right away, some say it works for a while, then they have to adjust their dose. I'm wondering if I Continue reading >>

Are these normal symptoms of metformin??? I've been taking metformin (1500mg) for PCOS and have been doing so for nearly six weeks now. At first I had no symptoms at all (apart from an upset tummy sometimes), but after taking it for about 2 weeks I started to notice some white / browny discharge sometimes when I wiped (Sorry if this is too much information, but am really worried!!). This then turned into a brown, clotty discharge which I had all the time and lasted for 3 weeks. I thought at first this was maybe the start of a period, but it was never really red in colour and didn't show any signs of going away. Then last week (on the morning I was going in for an echovist procedure) it finally looked as if I had a period. No brown, only red (blood) when wiping. First sign of a period I've had in 9 months. I had the echovist and the doctor said I would maybe see some blood afterwards, but as I was bleeding anyway then I wouldn't notice! That was a week ago and I still have a 'period', although I'm now worried as it isn't showing any signs of stopping. Has anyone else experienced any of this while taking metformin???? i have AF just like that too, although it stays brown for most of the time. always wondered if that was normal, thanks for the info leggiebear. i've been on met for about 3 years and still wasn't having af normally, so doc put me on prometrium. went off that for a couple months and had 50+ day cycles, so she had me start back up again. now that i'm on clomi Continue reading >>
Spotting On Metformin?
Started By elephantshoes, Mar 27 2012 09:00 PM I started Metformin this past Thursday and from Sunday until today (Tuesday - so three days) I've been spotting - mostly brown. While my periods are all over the place (anywhere from 16 days to 52 days apart) I'm not usually a spotter. IVF 2 - cancelled, ovulated through stims IVF 3 - BFP, welcomed beautiful baby girl IVF 4 - adding in PGS this time, two PERFECT blasts transferred, BFN Endo biopsy revealed my implantation window is off - can be fixed through drugs - yay! IVF 5 - cancelled, ridiculously bad growth compared to other cycles IVF 6 - transfer cancelled, all 11 blasts came back genetically abnormal getting second opinion/changing clinics...the story continues... IVF 7 - 34 retrieved, 7 day 5 blasts, 6 PGS NORMAL!!! Took a package at work...DH says no baby until I've been working for at least 6 months....boooo! Hoping for a Dec 2016 transfer... Immune testing - NK cells too high, LADs too low - 3 LITS + IVIG recommended and completed ERA testing shows that lining is receptive for 7dt (not the normal 5dt) I did not notice this when I started Metformin, however, if your cycles have been all over the place maybe this is a way your body is just getting used to the medication. I will say, someone gave me some great advice on Evening Primrose Oil and Flaxseed Oil and when to take them. I have been following it for 4-5 months now and have had a consistent 28 day cycle each month...might be smart to look into it to see if you can get the cycles under control. Here is the link I used: You just follow it with the calendar and see how it goes. I bought my EPO and FO from Wal-Mart. Loss @ 24 weeks due to pprom (Karolina) May all your dreams come true in ways you least expect it Hi Everyone - I'm turning to you for help again Continue reading >>
Did Anyone Spot On Metformin? - Fertilityfactor.com
I know there is another post on Metformin, but it's so long I thought I'd start a new one.....I was put on met last monday (10/11 days now??) to induce ovulation. I went off of the pill after 4 years and have only had 2 periods in the 7 months since I went off! Did anyone else on Metformin experience spotting 4 days into the treatment? I'm a little confused as to whether this was my period or maybe something else? The spotting was very light--not like a normal flow for me at all--and brownish in color. Does anyone know what this means?? I would appreciate your help! Thanks. I should probably mention that the spotting lasted for 5 days.... I don't know if this means anything...... Thanks again. I've been on Metformin since July '05 & personally I haven't experienced spotting on it. I've heard spotting can indicate low progesterone levels. I'd guess it's probably your AF. Have you Ov'ed at all lately? It couldn't be PG-related, could it? Are you tracking Ov at all? Either OPKs, charting, etc? I suppose too it could be related to the Metformin, maybe the 1 s/e I didn't personally experience on it. :) I HTH! Good luck. Mega....Thanks for your input!! To answer your question, I haven't been tracking ovulation since I haven't had a regular period since coming off of the pill. My doctor said that the metformin should make me ovulate though--how long does it take to do that? If it did make me ovulate right away, pregnancy is a possibility, but I think it would be too early to tell......what do you think? I don't have any signs of anything right now--no spotting, no tenderness, pains, etc.... I hate to be too optimistic that the met made me ovulate immediately--I don't want to be disappointed again!! Thanks & good luck to you too! You're welcome. I wish I knew more about Met. : Continue reading >>
Any Success With Metformin? Spotting Recently...
Well, my TTC Adventure is kind of long...but I'll do my best to summarize! My husband and I started ttc in April 2015 (8 months ago). I had really irregular cycles and eventually my periods just stopped. The only thing is...I wasn't pregnant and I desperately wanted to be. So, I went to the doctor with my concerns...they diagnosed me with PCOS and I started taking Medroxyprogestrone to jump start my periods. My last cycle started on November 25th, 2015 (thanks to the medicine). So, on cycle day 18 I took an OPK and got a +! My first positive since June! I was so happy! So, my husband and I dtd on cd 18 and cd 19. The next few days (cd 20 and 21) I started bleeding. I thought it was my period. So, I set up an appointment with the doctor (as I was supposed to the next time I started my next cycle). The doctor told me it wasn't my period but that it might be "irregular shedding". So, on cd 23, I went and had blood work done on my LH levels and I got a +! So, it was confirmed by a blood test that I ovulated and they caught me on the end of my ovulation. I was happy with those results! I thought it was kind of weird that I was bleeding during ovulation, but I guess it can happen! By the way, I have been on Metformin for a week and 3 days. I was unsure if maybe spotting was a side effect of taking the medicine but can't find anything about that online.... Now, yesterday and today I started spotting CD 25 and CD 26. It was a light brown color yesterday but today was a super dark brown EWCM type blob. I only saw this one time when using the restroom. (sorry! TMI!). I thought maybe this was implantation bleeding....but am unsure. This is why I'd like a second opinion! I realize that this all may just be a sign to AF showing up, which would be a bummer, but I'm happy that my bod Continue reading >>
Normal That I Have Brown Discharge While On Metformin?
normal that i have brown discharge while on metformin? hi , im using metformin for two months .. my first day of mense is may 15, 2012 and the LMP is may 20, 2012 i have unprotected sex.. im so crazy right now because of some symptoms of early pregnancy . yesterday i saw a bnrown discharge in my panty liner and this is the second day. is it normal that i have brown discharge while on metformin? or is this a mense already or am i pregnant? i have pcos please help me You marked this post as helpful! I changed my mind Treatment of PCOS with insulin modifiers (like Metformin) helps in better control of PCOS and symptoms (as most common cause for PCOS is insulin resistance). The brown discharge that you describe could suggest possibility of ovulation bleeding, or even implantation bleeding (if ovulation has occurred already and if you are pregnant). Wait and watch for your periods. Look out for development of any other new symptoms if pregnancy is suspected. If periods do not start within 10 days of expected period dates, or if you get abnormal periods, or if you suspect chances of pregnancy, consider visiting your doctor/gynecologist at the earliest for thorough examination (to confirm pregnancy related changes/signs in body) and blood/serum HCG level test (to confirm/rule out pregnancy accurately). If pregnancy gets ruled out, you can consider discussing about getting started on ovulation inducers to help you have more than 1 egg getting matured to increase chances of pregnancy. If you are trying for pregnancy, monitor cervical mucus changes and the BBT (basal body temperature) charting to predict your ovulation (along with the follicular study) and time your intercourse for having fruitful results. Have intercourse in positions that allow for deeper penetration for high Continue reading >>
