Globenewswire: Medtronic To Establish Innovation Center In Chengdu

Medtronic to Establish Innovation Center in Chengdu Facilitating Clinical Training for Physicians and Advancing Local Healthcare Efficiency in Central and Western China DUBLIN and CHENGDU, Sichuan - October 10, 2017 - Medtronic plc (NYSE:MDT) today announced the groundbreaking of its Chengdu Innovation Center at the Singapore-Sichuan Hi-Tech Innovation Park in Sichuan Province. Set to open in 2020, this center will provide a leading, cross-disciplinary clinical training and research platform for medical workers in Sichuan and other central and western regions. Liu Liedong, vice mayor of Chengdu, Omar Ishrak, chairman and CEO of Medtronic, and Chris Lee, president of Medtronic Greater China, attended the groundbreaking ceremony alongside a host of honored guests. "Medtronic understands the critical role that rural physicians play in driving the healthcare availability and transformation," said Omar Ishrak. "As such, we hope to support the growth and development of medical workers in China's vast central and western regions, help them better understand, grasp and capitalize the frontier technologies, enhance their clinical skills to benefit more patients, and move forward together toward the Healthy China goal." Despite increased investment in clinical training for China's healthcare professionals, clinical training for Chinese physicians, in particular those in the country's western regions, remains insufficient. The lack of effective training has led to an average 10-year gap between the maturation period of Chinese physicians and those in developed countries1. Furthermore, data from the "China Health and Family Planning Statistical Yearbook 2016" shows that the number of on-the-job medical training organizations in China's western regions totaled only 89 in 2015, or h Continue reading >>

Career Development to Engage Employees: Interview with Michael Smith, Medtronic Category: Best Use of Classroom and Traditional Training Program Name: Career Development atCovidien Our editorial team interviewed Michael Smith from Medtronic at the Leadership Excellence Awards this past February. Here are some excerpts from the exclusive interview. What is the overall objective of your program? Covidien, a $10 billion medical device and healthcare company, established a five pillar strategy called Covidien 2020. One pillar was Developing Talent and Culture to Drive Innovation and Inclusion. This led to increased investments in the development of skills and competencies that drive collaboration, partnership, and innovative behaviors. In 2012, the Vascular Therapies and Respiratory Monitoring divisions of Covidien identified career development as a solution to address lower engagement scores and to support the development of a learning culture in alignment with the companys Covidien 2020 strategy. The career strategy included executive engagement; targeted marketing and communications; formal instructor-led training workshops for 400 managers and more than 800 employees; on-going leadership support; and additional activities to sustain the effort. We also launched an internal career development portal to educate employees and provide tools and resources. To support the formal training opportunities, employees received executive leader and tailored individual communications. The communications were designed to introduce participants to the program, increase their excitement, gain commitment, and promote enrollment. An internal social media and collaboration site also provided a way for participants to engage in conversations about career development. Employees and managers Continue reading >>

Linking Employees for Greater Interaction, Collaboration and Ideas Consolidating Cardiac Disease Rhythm Management employees from seven facilities across the Twin Cities, Medtronics Mounds View, Minn., office complex helped create efficiencies for the company and encouraged employee and client collaboration. Medtronic chose Opus integrated team instead of a traditional design-bid-build approach to ensure a guaranteed maximum price and tight schedule. Achieving a Vision with an Integrated Team With a tight schedule and a desire to meet the clients expectations, the Opus teams construction project managers and architects met weekly with the team from Julie Snow Architects. Having all parties at the table allowed the ideas to not only flow but to be grounded in reality with the project management team providing quick cost estimates. According to Architecture Minnesota magazine, this close collaboration yielded one of the best examples in the county of how the budget-focused design-build process can yet incorporate bold and innovative design. The 1.2-million-square-foot office complex, spanning three eight-story towers, was built accommodate 4,800 employees. The complex also includes a 4,000-stall parking garage. One directive from the client was that no work area be more than 60 feet from a window, so the design incorporated the long, narrow towers, referred to as bars, with open space between each building. Because the company provides training and other services directly to physicians, the design also incorporates smart features like more than 200 audio-video capable conference rooms, private hoteling offices and even small niches for the traveling visitors luggage. Continuing Education With Medtronic

This weeks blog post is by Beth Blaha, RN, CDE, EMT, who went to the Medtronic Diabetes training in California in early May. It is a priority for MNCOMEand a requirement of the professionto continue to pursue education and professional development. I had the opportunity to attend a Therapy Expert Program at the Medtronic headquarters in California last week with other Certified Diabetes Educators from around the county. We had advanced training on how to interpret and upload data from the new IPRO 2 professional (for clinics) and IPRO (personal) for patients. We also reviewed advanced features on the 530 G with Enlite insulin pump that works with the sensor. We were lucky enough to be able to wear the insulin pump (with saline) and have the sensor inserted and wear it for a week. We worked in groups with real patients data from their sensor downloads and were educated on a systematic way to better interpret them. We learned about future advances in technology and how close we are to having a closed loop system (artificial pancreas). We were trained on how to program the sensor in detail to reflect specific patient needs. We reviewed how to upload the 530G insulin pump to Carelink , a tool that patients can use to upload their information data from their insulin pumps to see how they are managing their blood sugars. We also had a tour of the factory that makes the sensor for the continuous glucose monitor. It was very interesting to see how this sensor is created! This site is for informational purposes only. No part of it should be taken as medical advice. Continue reading >>

Medtronic Public Limited Company is a medical device company. Its headquarters are in Dublin, Ireland.[1][3][4][5] Its operational headquarters are in Fridley, Minnesota.[1][6] Medtronic is among the world's largest medical equipment development companies.[7] In 2015, at the time of its acquisition of Covidien, its market capitalisation was about $100 billion.[8] Medtronic operates in more than 140 countries.[1] It employs over 85,000 people and has more than 53,000 patents.[9] History[edit] Early history[edit] Medtronic Operational Headquarters in Fridley, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. Medtronic was founded in 1949 in northeastern Minneapolis by Earl Bakken and his brother-in-law, Palmer Hermundslie, as a medical equipment repair shop.[10] Through his repair business, Bakken came to know C. Walton Lillehei, a doctor of heart surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School. The deficiencies of the pacemakers of the day were made painfully obvious following a power outage over Halloween in 1957, which affected large sections of Minnesota and western Wisconsin.[11] A pacemaker-dependent paediatric patient of Lillehei died because of the blackout. The next day, Lillehei spoke with Bakken about developing some form of battery-powered pacemaker. Bakken modified a design for a transistorised metronome and created the first battery-powered external artificial pacemaker. Medtronic's old headquarters in St. Anthony, Minnesota The company expanded through the 1950s, mostly selling equipment built by other companies but also developing some custom-made devices. Bakken built a small pacemaker that could be strapped to the body and powered by batteries. Work in the new field later produced an implantable pacemaker in 1960. The company built headquarters in the Minneapoli Continue reading >>
