As Medical Device Industry Grows, Local Manufacturing Sector Could See Boost

As medical device industry grows, local manufacturing sector could see boost As medical device industry grows, local manufacturing sector could see boost (Oct 16): As a diabetic, Angie Foo needs to monitor her blood sugar levels closely. Recently, the housewife acquired a device that allows her to do so at home. Ive got quite used to using the device to monitor my blood sugar levels. [Initially,] I used it quite frequently, on a daily basis. But now that I monitor my food intake and exercise and find that they help, I sample my blood with it much less frequently maybe every three to four days, or sometimes once a week, she says. Having the device at home means Foo does not have to go to a clinic to check her blood sugar levels. It also allows her to seek medical attention should her blood sugar level increase. Its definitely more convenient to do it at home because it takes just a few minutes. Only on certain weeks or days when my sugar levels are unusually high, would I require a trip to the hospital to follow up on my condition, she adds. Such devices are increasingly part of physicians prescriptions for patients with chronic diseases, says William Chew, managing director of myHealth Sentinel. The company provides network-based solutions that integrate patient device data with electronic medical records. The numbers [that doctors] were getting [from patients] were somewhat unreliable, because some of the patients dont take their measurements when they are supposed to, says Chew. They will write down something so as not to be scolded by their doctors. This in turn can lead to increased insurance premiums or additional prescriptions. This is why things like patches, smart clothing and environmental sensors that detect movement and activity [are significant], Chew adds. Continue reading >>

Aggression Needed, Says Medtronic's New Regional Head

Aggression Needed, Says Medtronic's New Regional Head

Aggression needed, says Medtronic's new regional head MEDTRONIC's newly minted regional head comes across in conversation as a moderate man. But he wants to see some aggression - and he is not afraid to say so. In fact, the word "aggressive" popped up no less than half a dozen times when senior vice-president Chris Lee, a South Korean in his early 50s, was asked what the healthcare technology company needs to grow here. In his view, that could be anything from investing in startups alongside the Singapore government to ramping up talent acquisition here - even as neighbouring countries threaten a Changi plant with cheaper factories. Mr Lee became New York-listed Medtronic's Asia-Pacific president in December, after heading the Greater China market. Singapore has housed the company's Asia-Pacific headquarters since May 2016, with some 1,000 employees in what Mr Lee called the regional "centrepiece". "Not only is it seen as a centre of excellence in many aspects, but (also) a lot of our employees - increasingly, the senior people - are originally from Singapore and surrounding countries. And, as you know, the infrastructure of Singapore is very well suited to be qualified as a regional hub for all these countries. "So we have full operations here, ranging from manufacturing and sales and marketing and all kinds of supporting functions - they're all based in Singapore," he said. "We are prepared to work to position Singapore as the global hub . . . There are only a few companies that have declared Singapore as global or international headquarters, but not, to my knowledge, healthcare companies. But it does have infrastructure that could easily compete with global, international hubs - if the government can be a little bit more aggressive." Bold and aggressive solutions ha Continue reading >>

Medtronic was founded in 1949 in northeastern Minneapolis by Earl Bakken and his brother-in-law, Palmer Hermundslie, as a medical equipment repair shop.[10] Through his repair business, Bakken came to know C. Walton Lillehei, a doctor of heart surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School. The deficiencies of the pacemakers of the day were made painfully obvious following a power outage over Halloween in 1957, which affected large sections of Minnesota and western Wisconsin.[11] A pacemaker-dependent paediatric patient of Lillehei died because of the blackout. The next day, Lillehei spoke with Bakken about developing some form of battery-powered pacemaker. Bakken modified a design for a transistorised metronome and created the first battery-powered external artificial pacemaker. Medtronic's old headquarters in St. Anthony, Minnesota The company expanded through the 1950s, mostly selling equipment built by other companies but also developing some custom-made devices. Bakken built a small pacemaker that could be strapped to the body and powered by batteries. Work in the new field later produced an implantable pacemaker in 1960.
