Medtronic Cuts 240 Jobs As Part Of Ireland Manufacturing Move

Medtronic cuts 240 jobs as part of Ireland manufacturing move April 30, 2009 | Justine Varieur Cadet | Coronary Intervention & Surgery Medtronic has laid off about 240 workers from a cardiovascular division plant in Santa Rosa, Calif., in a plan to shift the work to a lower-cost facility in Galway, Ireland. The round of layoffs may not be the last for the 900-employee plant, according to the Press Democrat. The layoffs at Medtronic are unrelated to the current recession, but part of its five-year plan to move manufacturing to Ireland, where tax rates are lower and the company already employs 3,000 people. The Santa Rosa facility is expected to remain a hub for research and development, marketing, regulatory affairs and other operations, including a small amount of manufacturing. Since 1999, when Medtronic acquired the vascular unit from Arterial Vascular Engineering, it has eliminated or moved more than two-thirds of the 3,000 jobs. Santa Rosa is headquarters for Medtronic's vascular unit, which makes stents and stent grafts for treating artery disease. Its vascular sales reached $395 million in the most recent quarter, up 20 percent over the prior year. Continue reading >>

Medtronic Plans To Cut 2,000 Jobs

Medtronic Plans To Cut 2,000 Jobs

SANTA ROSA -- Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT) today said it would cut 2,000 jobs across the company as a result of "manufacturing consolidation efforts," while reporting that its Cardiac and Vascular Group, which includes operations in Santa Rosa, had worldwide sales of more than $2.3 billion for an increase of 5 percent over the year. Medtronic spokeswoman Cindy Resman told the Business Journal that approximately half the job cuts will take place overseas and 70 jobs would be affected across California, including Santa Rosa. Most affected employees have already been notified, she said. "The companys current worldwide employee populations is approximately 45,000 -- this is relatively flat from the start of our (fiscal year 2013)," Ms. Resman said in an email, also pointing out that Medtronic currently has 555 positions posted on its website, including 105 in California. About 65 percent of all cuts have already taken place. The remainder will take place before the end of the company's 2014 fiscal year, Ms. Resman said, adding that while job cuts have occurred in some areas, growth has occurred in others. The announcement of companywide jobs cuts came during a conference call with investors and reporters announcing Medtronic's fourth-quarter earnings. Minneapolis-based Medtronic anticipates it will save between $200 million and $225 million annually as a result of the job restructure. Cuts will take place primarily in medical device maker's Cardiac and Vascular Group and spine segment. The Cardiac and Vascular group, which includes the cardiac rhythm disease management, coronary, structural heart and endovascular businesses, reported international sales of $1.34 billion in its fourth quarter and fiscal 2013, ended April 26. That's a 7 percent increase over the year after ad Continue reading >>

Medtronic To Cut About 1,100 Jobs

Medtronic To Cut About 1,100 Jobs

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Medtronic Inc ( MDT.N ) on Tuesday said it would eliminate about 1,100 jobs this year, or almost 3 percent of its work force, in businesses whose growth has slowed, including its flagship heart rhythm device unit. The company said it also would consolidate certain manufacturing and research and development operations as part of a realignment of its global work force. Medtronic, based in Minneapolis, expects to take restructuring charges in its fiscal fourth quarter, ended April 25, and first quarter of fiscal 2009, a company spokeswoman told Reuters. Were making reductions where it makes sense, where we need to get more operating leverage, and also making sure that businesses that havent been growing at previous rates are staffed appropriately going forward, said Medtronic spokeswoman Marybeth Thorsgaard. Cuts will occur across the company, although in some businesses the company will add positions, Thorsgaard said. Medtronics revenue grew 12 percent in its most recent quarter, though revenue in the cardiac rhythm disease management unit rose just 3 percent. As part of the restructuring effort, Medtronic will move its endovascular manufacturing operations to Galway, Ireland, from Santa Rosa, California. The endovascular division makes stent grafts to treat aortic abdominal aneurysms. It also intends to relocate the diagnostic and monitoring portion of its cardiac rhythm disease management business to Minneapolis from the Netherlands, Thorsgaard said. Many medical products companies, including some of the biggest drugmakers, have launched restructuring programs over the past year as they cope with fewer new blockbuster products, fierce competition and declining sales in key franchises. On Monday, Merck & Co Inc ( MRK.N ) said it would eliminate 1,200 Continue reading >>
