Mr. Ishraks comments, made on the companys fiscal first-quarter conference call, gave the first glimpse of his strategy since he took over. The company reported quarterly results that met analysts estimates. Net income in its fiscal first quarter, which ended July 29, was $821 million, compared with $830 million during the same period a year ago. The Surprising Reason for Medtronic's Disappointing Diabetes Sales Medtronic secured early FDA approval for its MiniMed 670G, the closest step toward an artificial pancreas for patients with diabetes, during its last fiscal quarter. So why were diabetes sales below expectations? In its quarterly earnings report Tuesday morning, Medtronic reported sales that missed analyst expectations, notably in the Diabetes as well as Cardiac and Vascular Group businesses. At first glance, the shortfall in the Diabetes business may seem odd given the regulatory victory during the quarter-- early FDA approval of the MiniMed 670G insulin pump . In reality, it seems that the light diabetes revenue may have been because of--not despite--the early FDA win. Medtronic reported diabetes sale of $462 million for its second quarter of fiscal 2017, $24 million below Wall Street's consensus estimate of $486 million. In slides presented alongside its November 22 earnings call, Medtronic pointed out that US. sales of its insulin pumps were negatively impacted as consumers anticipated the new device launch. or would have been if I could have got any sleep. After running the 670g system for just over a month, the lack of sleep due to constant calibration AND b/g requirements would have negated any benefits of the pseudo 'closed loop' system. Unfortunately, after switching over, my b/g was as stable as the titanic, whilst the cgm was often off by as much as 150 mgdl! Despite tweaks and perseverance I did not have much luck with this long awaited set up. 1- unusually excessive need to calibrate AND test b/g. Even after a month I was getting alarms to test every couple of hours or so, throughout the day and night causing severe lack of sleep. 2- CGM inaccuracy. very rarely within 50 mgdl of stick test. (Dexcom G5 nearly ALWAYS within 10). 3-Sensors, these have developed little since they came out a few years ago when I tried for a while. They are painful to insert, using a large 'plunger' type device. They do not 'stick' unless the additional band aid is used. (bit of a cheap work around non sticking sensors. why not improve the adhesive?) The adhesive on the sensor is virtually useless. The adhesive on the 'band aid' tears off skin when removing. 4-Sensor insert angle: the sensor inserts at 90', compared to the dexcom g5 which is at an angle. After talking to a number of endocrine specialists it seems this could be an issue as to where the subcutaneous fluid is drawn, hence inaccurate readings. If you dont have a lot of fat around the abdomen, you may encounter similar issues. The result is fluid samples being drawn from much deeper under the skin than it should. Overall the experience was not great to say the least. This is compounded by having to fight to return to Medtronic. The area rep is doing everything possible to not let this happen. I've been a pump user for 17 years and I was unfortunate enough to be talked into trying a Medtronic pump for the first time. I guess using the word "trying" would be getting a little ahead of myself because I never made it that far. Medtronic is AWFUL. Calling their "customer support" for anything is a total waste of time. You'll be on the phone for a minimum of 30 minutes and your problem will absolutely not be resolved on the first try even if you are certain everything was taken care of. I know there isn't many choices left when it comes to insulin pumps but save yourself some aggravation and go with someone else! Moderator Type1 - Minimed 640G - Enlite CGM That is disappointing. Here in Australia I have found Metronic tech support excellent. I've never had to wait more than a couple of minutes to get through and though accents & fuzzy lines can making communication a bit difficult, I've always had my problem resolved. If it was to organise purchase, I doubt tech support would be the right place to go. Can you get your DE to do the ground work for you? D.D. For the first time in a decade, people with diabetes in the U.S. who are not using an insulin pump can get a stand-alone continuous glucose monitor (CGM) from Medtronic Diabetes. The company announced Monday that it had received FDA approval on March 8 for its Guardian Connect system, after regulators spent two years (!) reviewing this smartphone-compatible medical device that's been on the market overseas since 2016. We've got a rundown of the product specs below. But in a nutshell, the new Guardian Connect marks Medtronic's return to the stand-alone CGM market, a shift from its aggressive marketing in recent years pushing customers to purchase an insulin pump-CGM combo system. While it uses the same Guardian 3 sensor approved for use with the Minimed 670G hybrid closed loop system, this new stand-alone CGM has a different transmitter with built-in Bluetooth Low Energy (aka Bluetooth 4.0). That allows the transmitter to share data directly with a smartphone, notably bypassing the need for a separate dedicated receiver device. This is a first for the FDA and is probably the reason it took two years of consideration before approval.
