Resource Management At Medtronic: Investing In Visibility

Resource Management At Medtronic: Investing In Visibility

Medtronic decided to implement PDWare, a resource management toolset that enables enterprises to plan, allocate, and manage their human resources. PDWare is designed to manage complex resource requirements in a distributed environment such as Medtronics. To address needs at both the project level and the portfolio level, Medtronic selected the PDWare solution. In addition to Medtronics functional requirements, the evaluation team had some significant financial requirements on its list of selection criteria. The solution needed to: Be able to demonstrate value right away, meaning low initial investment Require little to no investment in IT infrastructure Medtronic also had some soft criteria it was looking for a partner that would be flexible, trustworthy, and focused on the relationship. PDWare was selected to participate in the feasibility stage and demonstrated these traits by coaching Medtronic on process changes and tool use. The proof of concept also allowed the selection team to prove the business case to management. Based on these factors, as well as PDWares significant cost advantage over competitors, PDWare was selected to move forward with the implementation. Medtronic wisely espoused the philosophy that the tool should support the process, so the first phase of the implementation was focused on process design. This phase included defining an overall process owner, as well as the formal roles and responsibilities that would be associated with the future process. The rollout was phased, starting with a pilot to confirm benefits and then expanding to a single owner in multiple groups. The solution was eventually rolled out to an additional 600 users, but with an intentionally organic uptake. We allowed each organization to see how it worked for them. Its co-founder, Earl Bakken, was credited with a deep moral purpose and an inner drive to usescientific knowledge and entrepreneurial skills to help others. Thats a good description of what attracts St. Olaf graduates to the company. Senior Director, Global Health Innovation, Medtronic, Inc; Emergency Physician, Mayo Clinic (Rochester) One of the most powerful tools my St. Olaf education provided was the ability to say yes. As a student, you always have choices. Saying yes means stretching yourself well past your comfort zone, and that leads to experiences that lay the foundation for your future. At St. Olaf, saying yes meant singing in the St. Olaf Choir, working with St. Olaf Records, and being a teaching assistant. After St. Olaf it meant combining medical school and business school, staying involved with the college as the Recent Graduate member of the Board of Regents, and taking jobs and internships that would challenge me and change my trajectory. I received part of my early education in the Netherlands, so Ive always had an international orientation. St. Olaf sustained that by offering a campus culture that encouraged a global view and by fostering debate that encouraged new ideas and global voices. The balance between science and humanities provided the scientific knowledge required for medical school, but also fed my deep curiosity about how to solve large and seemingly intractable problems of society. My three years in the St. Olaf Choir taught discipline and showed the impact we can have on the lives of others by sharing what we love. Ive been fortunate to practice emergency medicine in a wide variety of settings, from urban centers in the U. Continue reading >>

Career Development To Engage Employees: Interview With Michael Smith, Medtronic

Career Development to Engage Employees: Interview with Michael Smith, Medtronic Category: Best Use of Classroom and Traditional Training Program Name: Career Development atCovidien Our editorial team interviewed Michael Smith from Medtronic at the Leadership Excellence Awards this past February. Here are some excerpts from the exclusive interview. What is the overall objective of your program? Covidien, a $10 billion medical device and healthcare company, established a five pillar strategy called Covidien 2020. One pillar was Developing Talent and Culture to Drive Innovation and Inclusion. This led to increased investments in the development of skills and competencies that drive collaboration, partnership, and innovative behaviors. In 2012, the Vascular Therapies and Respiratory Monitoring divisions of Covidien identified career development as a solution to address lower engagement scores and to support the development of a learning culture in alignment with the companys Covidien 2020 strategy. The career strategy included executive engagement; targeted marketing and communications; formal instructor-led training workshops for 400 managers and more than 800 employees; on-going leadership support; and additional activities to sustain the effort. We also launched an internal career development portal to educate employees and provide tools and resources. To support the formal training opportunities, employees received executive leader and tailored individual communications. The communications were designed to introduce participants to the program, increase their excitement, gain commitment, and promote enrollment. An internal social media and collaboration site also provided a way for participants to engage in conversations about career development. Employees and managers Continue reading >>

Session Transcript: Caroline Stockdale, Senior Vice President Human Resources, Medtronic, Inc. 2011 Human Capital Leadership Forum (Chicago) Caroline Stockdale, SVP Human Resources, Medtronic, Inc. [Caroline Stockdale]: Well, as I look out across the room I've got to say that I'm honored to be here among such a spectacular group of people and reading people's bios makes me wonder why I'm here and the rest of you are sitting there. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to, to see everybody in the room speak at some point. I, just to give you a bit of background; I work for Medtronic. Medtronic is a company, for those who don't know us is the manufacturer of medical devices in all different sectors, diabetes, heart, cardiac and vascular. So our mission is all about extending life, saving life and it's a company I'm proud to be a part of. We have the rising man symbol if anybody has ever seen that. I don't have any PowerPoint slides in my presentation today and it's not a purist approach; it's just a personal choice because I found that when I was presenting, I would usually follow slides to the grim death and even if the whole room has its eyes glazed over, I decided that wasn't probably the best approach therefore for me, for me, for presenting. My background is not predominantly in HR. I sought out life as a general manager; then discovered the power of finance. When I got bigger roles and was faced with formidable operating plans, so I then qualified as a, an English accountant, went into risk management, back into finance; all over the place had my first flirtation with HR at GE. Did some customer-facing roles and have kind of flitted in and out of GE. Prior to this job, I was in an operating role in the healthcare sector. So I probably come at this from a bit of a different Continue reading >>
