Discussing the companys fiscal 4th-quarter results with analysts yesterday, chairman & CEO Omar Ishrak said a speed to scale program in spine helped drive a steady cadence of new product launches, resulting in a sequential improvement to our growth rate for the business. In neuromodulation, however, the picture is not as rosy. Drug-pump sales are ina double-digit top-line slide, Ishrak said, as Medtronic copes with an FDA consent decree issued in April2015 thathalted the manufacture of its SynchroMed II pump. Drug pump revenues are expected to be flat from now on, he said. We ordered 40 sheets of four-by-eight cardboard, explains Brian Bechard , a Technical Fellow at Medtronic. Everything we wanted in the space was put together in cardboard first, before we created CAD drawings and then the physical environment. To create a new space for prototyping the future of healthcare experiences at home and in hospitals, why not start out with a cardboard prototype? The Applied Innovation Lab opened its doors in September 2015, with a goal of helping Medtronic evolve from being simply a maker of medical devices like pacemakers and stents to one that is thinking more broadly about improving health and patient outcomes. In the two years since it opened, there has hardly been a quiet moment at the lab and there has been so much demand from different groups in the company that Bechard and the rest of the team at the lab have had to create screening criteria for what they will work on. However, that sector of Medtronic, which is the third largest out of four groups, had the smallest growth margin. While all other groups saw consistent gains, the companys restorative therapies group was the only one to have specialized businesses post declining sales. Specifically, sales of its spine business fell 1 percent from a year ago to $737 million, while its neuromodulation business took a 5 percent dive to $494 million. The saving grace for Medtronics restorative therapies group turned out to be its surgical technologies and neurovascular businesses, both of which had significant sales growth compared to last year.
