Mastering Diabetes: An Amazing Experience

Mastering Diabetes: An Amazing Experience

February 11, 2016 | Filed under: Articles and tagged with: dairy-free , diabetes , plant-based , raw , retreat , vegan In mid-January I had an amazing experience, and Id like to share a little bit about it with you. I spent four days helping out as one of the chefs at a raw vegan retreat for diabetics in Southern California, called the Mastering Diabetes Nutrition and Fitness Retreat. Your first thought when you read this might be that eating a bunch of carbohydrates, especially in the form of fruit, goes against the conventional wisdom on diabetes management. But that was exactly what was so astounding about this retreat and the immediate results that the participants saw in terms of even, normal-range blood glucose levels and increased insulin sensitivity (meaning that they didnt have to take as much insulin as usual in order for their bodies to process the glucose they consumed). First Ill tell you a little bit about the structure of the retreat, and then Ill share my impressions with you, as well as some of the amazing results experienced by the participants. Dr. Cyrus Khambatta , PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry (aka Mangoman), Robby Barbaro (Mindful Diabetic Robby) and Jewels Christine (health coach and personal trainer), along with endocrinologist Nancy Bohannon , MD, FACP, FACE and Kylie Buckner, RN, MSN, led the event. Left to right: Cyrus Khambatta, Robby Barbaro, Jewels Christine, Kylie Buckner & Nancy Bohannon There were 15 attendees, about half of whom had either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. The other half of the participants included a few individuals who were interested primarily in weight loss, and family members who were there to support their loved ones. The participants ran the gamut in terms of age and fitness level, and all were open-minded and determ Continue reading >>

25 Experts On How To Transform Diabetes With A Plant-based (vegan) Diet

25 Experts On How To Transform Diabetes With A Plant-based (vegan) Diet

There is a lot of confusion around what is the best diet for diabetes health. Low-carb? Atkins? Paleo? Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and I have put together a free online event to clearly demonstrate why a low-fat, plant-based, whole-food diet is truly the most effective diet for all forms of diabetes. The Mastering Diabetes Online Summit starts Wednesday, February 1st and is completely free. The diabetes community at large is in favor of eating a low-carb diet. I completely understand the logic behind this -- because diabetes is characterized by having high blood sugar numbers, it seems to make sense to avoid foods that are high in carbohydrates and convert to sugar easily. However, science has shown us that this logic is faulty. In reality, the majority of people with diabetes, regardless of type, are suffering from insulin resistance. It turns out that high blood sugar numbers are not the problem, but rather are a symptom of a larger problem, which is insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is caused by eating a diet high in fat. This leads to fat being stored in muscle and liver tissues, which inhibits insulin from being properly utilized by the body. Adopting a low-fat, plant-based, whole-food diet addresses this issue by clearing out that fat and therefore reversing insulin resistance. Once you address the cause of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, the condition can be completely reversed in many cases. For those living with type 1 diabetes (like Dr. Khambatta and myself) and type 1.5 diabetes, reversing insulin resistance leads to more predictable numbers and decreased risk for long-term diabetes complications. It's truly as simple as just eating low-fat plant foods. Cyrus and I have interviewed the top experts in the world of nutrition to provide over 25 hours of life sav Continue reading >>

Mastering Diabetes Retreat: Changes In Insulin Sensitivity Following 4 Days Of A Low-fat Plant-based Diet

Mastering Diabetes Retreat: Changes In Insulin Sensitivity Following 4 Days Of A Low-fat Plant-based Diet

Mastering Diabetes Retreat: Changes in Insulin Sensitivity Following 4 Days of a Low-Fat Plant-Based Diet Its always a rare opportunity to learn about the day-to-day life of people living with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. While everybody has their own individualized methods for controlling blood glucose, preserving insulin sensitivity, performing frequent exercise and taking medication, the one puzzle piece that unites many living with diabetes is simple: Unfortunately, many people living with diabetes suffer from a serious lack of education about the actual cause of blood glucose variability. And its not their fault. There seems to be a gross miss understanding of diabetes nutrition, which has resulted in alarmingly high rates of diabetes across the U.S. and across the world. On one hand, our country has some of the best medical care in the world. On the other hand, understanding exactly what to put into your mouth when living with diabetes has become an endlessly confusing question with a multitude of misleading answers. Thats exactly why we put on the Mastering Diabetes Retreat in Southern California in January 2016. It provided us with an opportunity to connect and learn from individuals living around the world with both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. I co-hosted the retreat with many extremely talented individuals Jewels Brown and Robby Barbaro . In addition, we had top-notch medical support from Kylie Buckner RN, MSN, and Dr. Nancy Bohannon M.D ., a diabetes endocrinologist practicing in San Francisco. This all-star team of diabetes experts included Stefanie Dougherty , and our mission was to instruct, inspire and motivate people living with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes to understand a completely new version of nutrition and fitness for diabetes mana Continue reading >>

Mastering Diabetes With A Plant-based Diet

Mastering Diabetes With A Plant-based Diet

Mastering Diabetes with a Plant-Based Diet What if you could do something about your diabetes or even reverse it? There have been some many, many real life stories of people switching to a low fat plant-based diet and seeing incredible results with not only Type 2 Diabetes, but also Type 1 and Type 1.5. Weight loss is one strategy for managing diabetes and plant-based diets are nutrient dense without packing on excess unhealthy calories. That means you dont have to eat small portion sizes if you are eating whole foods, plant-based meals. Also, the studies show that a diet high in carbohydrates (as long as they are whole foods, NOT from refined sources) helps with diabetes as well. Interestingly enough, cardiovascular disease is what kills most diabetics (just like everyone else) and plant-based diets are highly effective and preventing and reversing heart disease as well. Todays guests are awesome- Cyrus Khambatta, PhD and Robby Barbaro are the founders of MasteringDiabetes.org. They offer a successful coaching program for people with all forms of diabetes including pre-diabetes to help increase insulin sensitivity, get your best A1C, and improve overall health and longevity. As athletes themselves, both living with Type 1 Diabetes, they have scoured through 85 years of research and are experts. They also have a closed facebook group as part of their online coaching practice. I love their website because its jam-packed with information and even recipes. My friend and former podcast guest, Brenda Davis recommended them to me. Brenda is one of the worlds leading dieticians, specifically in plant-based diets and treating diabetes. Robby and Cyrus individual stories of how they found plant-based diets and how it helped their Type 1 Diabetes Diabetes explained: insulin sens Continue reading >>

Reversing Your Diabetesthe Mastering Diabetes Retreat And Coaching Program An Interview With Robby Barbaro And Cyrus Khambatta, Phd

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Kirk Hamilton interviews Dr. Cyrus Khambatta (nutritional biochemistry) and Robby Barbaro (The Mindful Diabetic) both type 1 diabetics on their 5 day Mastering Diabetes Retreat with 3 full days of intensive experiential training that results in dramatic reductions in blood sugar (type 1 & 2 diabetics), medication need (or elimination), and reduced insulin doses in type 1 diabetics. The program combines an all you can eat buffet of low-fat, whole, unprocessed, high complexed carbohydrate rich foods (beans, lentils, squash), fruit and non-starchy vegetables followed by educational lectures after breakfast and lunch, which are then followed by twice daily, practical exercise sessions. Because blood sugars can drop so dramatically and quickly, within hours to days, because of the effectiveness of the program (diet and exercise), and the clients dramatic improvement in insulin sensitivity, clients are coached on how to use a Decision Tree so they can reduce their medication and insulin needs appropriately to avoid low blood sugar episodes. Type 2 diabetics see dramatic reductions in their fasting and 2 hour postprandial blood sugars and type 1s see a 20-40% reduction in insulin need while at the same time significantly increasing their good carbohydrate intake which to many participants is almost unbelievable! The focus of the program is educating you by experience how to dramatically improve your insulin sensitivity, (i.e. reducing the amount of insulin you need to drive glucose into the cell). Robby and Dr. Khambatta offer an online coaching that has three components to help the participants make permanent and lasting changes so one can cure their type 2 diabetes and dramatically reduce their insulin need if type 1 diabetics, and Continue reading >>

Mastering Diabetes

Mastering Diabetes

Im a wordie. A poet . Someone who cares deeply about language and how its used. Words matter. Theimpact and importance of just the right word and how our word choice dictates how were received is not lost on me.As a writer, one can never control how readers respond or interpret your work or words, but that doesnt mean you stop trying to use the right ones. Heres the thing: we never stop trying to get diabetes right, and yet we know well never get it right all the time. So when Diabetes BFF , Gina Capone teased that she thought she had mastered diabetes , it gave me pause and really made me consider the notion. So let me put it out there for yall to tell me what you think: Does anybody ever truly master diabetes? Is such a thing even possible or merely a fallacy? Heres the deal for me at least: Whether youve been certified as a master of diabetes or not, regardless of if you have a framed certificate on your wall to prove said mastery, the short answer for me is NO. Its impossible! After twenty years as a type 1, I can honestly say I will never master diabetes. Thats like saying Ive mastered writing or better yet, mastered life. Uh, really, Amylia? Tell me moreI dont think so. Now dont get me wrong, Gina was not actually saying she mastered her diabetes, but she brings up a good point. Its important to do what you can to try and control something you know is never going to be fully controlled, but you cant fool yourself. How does one master a disease that is unstoppable, uncontrollable? I know thats another hot-button issuethe whole notion of ones diabetes being in control or uncontrolled, and my short response to that is this: Regardless of whether ones A1C is under or over 7.0, we will never have type 1 diabetes controlled. Sure, it can be managed, but thats something Continue reading >>

Episode 061 - Diabetics Doing Mastering Diabetes Through Insulin Absorption With Robby Barbaro

Episode 061 - Diabetics Doing Mastering Diabetes Through Insulin Absorption With Robby Barbaro

Robby ( @mindfuldiabeticrobby on Instagram ) Barbaro joins the podcast to share his lifestyle and his journey as a T1D. DISCLAIMER: This podcast is in no way an endorsement of the interviewee, it is intended to create awareness of the different lifestyles T1Ds have available to them and give the leaders of those lifestyles a platform for open dialogue. Robby is the youngest of three brothers, two of which have Type-1 Diabetes. Robbys family was in the process of relocating to Florida when Robbys symptoms of T1D began to surface. Because his brother already had T1D, his mother told him via phone to test his blood sugar on his brothers meter where he discovered his blood glucose was over 400. Since then, Robby was a successful competitive tennis player, was very active and disciplined in his approach to perfecting his craft which translated into what he now does with his coaching program Mastering Diabetes . Robby is committed to healing Type-1 Diabetes, and uses the example of Roger Bannister breaking the 4 minute mile after so many people said it was impossible, and then after he broke it, people starting breaking the four minute mile every day. Robbys journey into the raw food world began with Gabriel Cousins which led him to meet Dr. Cyrus who became his partner in Mastering Diabetes. After nearly 10 years of mastering his diet and filtering out all the things that would be considered detrimental, and he now believes that the cure for T1D is not limited to just diet, but would require some other form of healing or stimulus. Robbys program is very interesting, and I appreciate his willingness to leave no stone unturned until he finds a solution for T1D. I also believe there are many false stories out there about healing T1D, but when you really talk to the people who Continue reading >>

Mastering Diabetes One Recipe At A Time

Mastering Diabetes One Recipe At A Time

This guest post was written by type 2 diabetic and chef Ward Alper. It originally appeared on his website, The Decadent Diabetic, and was republished on Information About Diabetes with permission. Okay, I admit it. I am shamelessly in love with Ina Garten. For those of you who dont know about her, she is the author and television chef that owned The Barefoot Contessa in the Hamptons on Long Island. She smiles and laughs and enjoys cooking and sharing recipes with others and she cooks up a storm. Her positive attitude is an inspiration to thousands. Her phrases What could be better? What could be easier? Who wouldnt like that? just make me smile. Most important, she is SMART! She knows just how much butter really is in the recipe. She is not ashamed because it tastes so good. This lady has no guilt about what and how SHE cooks. You and I may have to make a few adjustments to her recipes for us to have less guilt. However, there is NEVER a reason for less taste. I have heard her say more than once, Master a few recipes and you are all set in the kitchen. She is also RIGHT! I realized the other day I have been sharing recipes with suggestions for you to change them and make them your own. I suggested that my Almond Creme Cake easily transforms into chocolate, lemon or berry crme. I shared with you the basic recipe for a salad dressing ( Dijon Vinaigrette ) that changes from one flavor to another just by changing out the vinegar flavor. Much of cooking is just like that. It is not a case of re-inventing the wheel for every meal, but adding new hubcaps and paint to take it to a new level and make it look and taste different and maybe even better. Learning to love making a few recipes, and changing just one or two ingredients in the recipes, takes a lot of the work and stres Continue reading >>
