Sugar also keeps baked goods moist so sugar-free versions may need to be wrapped in cling film before storage to prevent drying out. "There are a number of sugar substitutes on the market but the most natural are whole fruit and vegetables. Sugar & Sweetener Free Birthday Cake

Sugar & Sweetener Free Birthday Cake

I wanted to make a sugar free cake for my daughters birthday. So I had a search online. Seems simple enough. Except, do you have any idea how hard it is to find agenuinely sugar free birthday cake recipe for young children? Seriously, Google it. Itll come up with hundreds of seemingly perfect options. And then you read the ingredients. Honey. Maple Syrup. Dates. Dried fruit. Fruit juice. I get that these are more appealing to give to children than caster sugar. They seem innocent enough. And for a celebration? Why not? Justdont call them sugar free!! These ingredients areall forms of sugar! I was getting really fed up of finding nothing. I was not entirely unhappywith the thought of giving my daughter a slightlysugary cake for her birthday. After all, its a celebration! But I dont see why a celebrationhas to include sugar . I dont understand why I will be judged asdepriving my child if I do not serve her sugar-laden treats and drinks on those days. So I wanted to do my best to try and find a totally sugar free cake before resorting to sugar. After all, my daughter is used to less-than-sweet treats, so why not give her something that she will truly enjoy without it being sugar-laden? As I was getting ready to give up, I came across a recipe for a totally sugar and sweetener free banana cake that looked good and had some great comments. It wasnt exactly what I was looking for, but was close, so I adapted it for my daughter and our family coming over, and it was a success all round! The World Health Organisation recommends that adults have less than 6 teaspoons of sugar a day (up to 9 for men), and that children have a maximum of 3 teaspoons a day. (Jump to Healthy Dessert Recipe Archive ) Who doesnt love a little something sweet after a meal, or enjoy a cookie to ease the stress of a rough day? While no one wants to live life without desserts, we all know the damage that too many can do to our bodies. In fact, sugar-laden desserts contribute to weight gain, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and even Alzheimers disease. You see, your blood sugar is directly linked to your risk of nearly every chronic disease. And when you dont make a conscious effort to reduce the sugar in your diet whether it be from a piece of cake, a snack of cookies or even fruit it is all too easy to consume a high sugar diet that drives up blood sugar and insulin levels, promotes inflammation , increases triglyceride levels and even speeds the physical signs of aging through the formation of AGEs . But heres the good news: You CAN enjoy healthy dessert recipes that will satisfy your sweet tooth and provide your body with nutrients that will actually work for your health not against it. One of the biggest problems with creating healthy dessert recipes is that one of the main ingredients in dessert recipes is sugar (and usually refined, processed sugars at that). And because of this, many healthy desserts contain artificial sweeteners as a replacement. But studies have shown that while artificial sweeteners may not contain calories or sugar, they are worse for your health. In fact, many common artificial sweeteners can cause a lessening of A1C control (a measure of blood sugar over time), an imbalance of healthy gut flora, free radical damage and many other harmful health effects. Thats why our dessert recipes dont use artificial sweeteners. Instead we rely on all-natural, low glycemic sweeteners such as stevia, erythritol , (with small amounts Continue reading >>

2 cups plain or vanilla yogurt (such as So Delicious) (440g) about 1/2 cup peanut butter (or almond butter or allergy-friendly alternative) (100g) 1 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract (omit if using vanilla yogurt) (6g) pure stevia extract to taste, or 1/3 cup sugar of choice (more if using an unsweetened yogurt) Blend all ingredients except optional chips (or stir very well by hand) until completely smooth. If you have an ice cream maker, transfer mixture to the machine and churn according to manufacturers directions. My Cuisinart took 9 minutes. Add chips if desired. Eat immediately as soft-serve, or freeze in an airtight container for a half hour if you want a firmer texture. (If you dont have an ice cream machine: simply transfer the blended mixture to an airtight container, freeze, and stir well every half hour for 2-3 hours. The texture wont be as creamy, but it still works.) 10 Delish Water Recipes for Girls Who Don't like It Plain ... I am a huge pumpkin pie fan, what about you? I quit eating my moms sugar-laden version several years back, but last year I was given a treat when I discovered Chocolate Covered Katies Crustless Pumpkin Pie. This stuff is really good! It tastes so indulgent, just like the real deal. I dont use regular flour like Katie calls for since I avoid refined flours. Instead, I like to use coconut flour, which Katie advises against, but I find it works just fine. The cake is a little dense, but it still tastes incredible. Almond flour may work better if you want a grain-free option, though I havent altered her recipe with any other flour yet. I also used an extra pack of stevia instead of xylitol or brown sugar. 1/3 cup flour (Almost any will work, but not coconut flour) (42g) 1/3 cup xylitol or brown sugar (You can use a liquid sweetener. How To Sweeten Your Recipes The Natural Way (no Sugar Needed!)

How to Sweeten Your Recipes the Natural Way (No Sugar Needed!) If your sweet tooth rules your cravings, its time to consider some new ways to sweeten your recipes without sugar, the natural way. Having a treat with real sugar or even natural sugars like agave nectar on special occasions like birthdays and holidays are one thing, but when added sugar becomes a regular part of your diet, its time to consider a healthier option. Sugar is now thought to be one of the leading reasons behind cancer, obesity, and diabetes . The white stuff (or brown stuff in the form of syrups and natural sugars like palm sugar) may seem harmless due to spiffy marketing or if products are by a trusted name brand, but theyre not. Some are even labeled raw, organic, unrefined, vegan, etc., but the truth is theyre all the same to your body and detrimental to your health , no matter how natural they may be or how slowly they convert to sugar in the bloodstream. Theyre also not pure, whole foods either, which we all know is the healthiest option. When it comes to taming your sweet tooth, try some of theseways to sweeten your recipes without any added sugar whatsoever. Oh and dont worry, theres no artificial sweeteners involved in case youre wondering. Baking with applesauce is one of my favorite tricks for eliminating most all the sweeteners called for in a recipe. Muffins, cookies , and even cakes all taste amazing with applesauce. This trick even works for brownies , homemade bars, pancakes and plenty more. As a bonus, applesauce is a great stand in for eggs, butter and oil, so it naturally lightens the recipes the entire way around. Just be sure to buy unsweetened, plain applesauce since many varieties include added sugar. Or you can keep things are fresh as possible and just make your own ! Be Continue reading >>

However, trying to avoid the sweet stuff or even understand what counts as sugar can be like navigating through a minefield. Many so-called sugar-free recipes contain ingredients such as honey, maple syrup or fruits all of which still count as sugar, albeit a more natural kind than refined cane sugar. Other people prefer to use artificial sweeteners in their baking or hot drinks. When I cook for my kids I try to use as little sugar is possible, and to use natural sugars when needed because I believe this is better for them. But what about people with a condition like diabetes? I spoke to Kathryn Kirchner, Clinical Adviser at Diabetes UK , to find out what her advice is. She said: We all enjoy a sweet treat now and again, and thats fine as part of a healthy, balanced diet for people both with or without diabetes. Artificial sweeteners are one way to help cut down on some of that added sugar, by using them in your tea or coffee, or in baking.
