A new study found that drinking cranberry juice reduces some key risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, adds compelling evidence to the growing body of research on the benefits of berries on the heart. Cranberries are rich in a number of polyphenols, chemicals that have been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. They include procyanidins, quercetin, myricitrin, and anthocyanins. Quercetin, for example, has been shown to reduce blood pressure, while procyanidins have reduced C-reactive protein (CRP) in animal studies. Anthocyanins have lowered triglycerides in animal studies as well as inflammatory markers in people. In this study, researchers randomized patients into two groups, one that drank two 8-ounce glasses of low-calorie cranberry juice each day for eight weeks. The juice was sweetened with sucralose and had about 40 calories in each serving. The control group drank a similarly tasting drink that did not contain cranberry juice. Both drinks were supplied by Ocean Spray Cranberries, which partially funded the study, but was not involved in the analysis of the results. Both groups also followed a fully controlled diet to reduce other dietary variables. The study was double blind, so neither subjects nor researchers knew which people drank the juice versus the placebo. The World Health Organization recently shared a shocking statistic: 347 million people worldwide have diabetes. In the UK almost 5% of the population has diabetes and in the US almost 10% of the population has diabetes. These figures do not include the percent of the population that are prediabetic or don’t realize they have diabetes. Diabetes can have serious health complications including nerve, eye and kidney damage. The good news is that 93 percent of diabetes is caused by lifestyle choices – what we eat and how much we move. Which means that most diabetics can manage and even prevent diabetic damage through diet and exercise. People with prediabetes can stop it dead in it’s tracks and never develop the disease at all. Nothing about type 2 diabetes is inevitable if you can make positive changes. For over 10 years, I’ve been working with diabetes patients in the UK. I’ve seen first-hand what happens when diabetics lose weight and adopt a healthy diet. Many of my patients reduce their medications or are able to stop taking it all together. One problem that is especially on the rise is: insulin resistance the precursor to diabetes. According to Dr. Weil, With insulin resistance, the normal amount of insulin secreted is not sufficient to move glucose into the cells thus the cells are said to be resistant to the action of insulin. To compensate, the pancreas secretes insulin in ever-increasing amounts to maintain fairly adequate blood-sugar movement into cells and a normal blood-sugar level. However, sometimes even this isnt enough and the sugar doesnt get into the cells, but rather is deposited as fat. Insulin resistance is dangerous for several reasons: 1) the pancreas has to work very hard and eventually becomes fatigued, leading to diabetes and 2) since the cells arent fed the nourishment they need, you end up being hungry soon after a full meal (which starts the cycle all over again, often leading to obesity).
