Although a new FTC rule now requires testimonial ads to cite typical results, the looming question still remains: Which of these diet programs are worth your money? To find out, MoneyWatch analyzed eight of the biggest diet plans. Three are support-only plans that don't require you to buy their food, and five are food-delivery plans. We interviewed leading nutritionists and weight-loss professionals, pored through clinical studies, and tallied up membership fees and food costs to determine the ones most likely to help you slim down and to see how much you'd pay to drop 20 pounds. Diabetes is a condition where the body has too much glucose, or blood sugar, in the bloodstream. Usually, the body produces insulin in response to glucose. Insulin is a hormone that moves glucose from the bloodstream into the cells, but with type 1 diabetes, the body no longer produces insulin. In type 2 diabetes, the body either may or may not be making enough insulin, however, the cells don't use the insulin properly. In either situation and without proper management, glucose can build up in the bloodstream. This excess buildup of glucose flows through the blood vessels throughout your body and then eventually can cause damage to your heart, eyes, kidneys and feet. Although both types have to do with high blood sugar, type 1 and type 2 diabetes differ in a number of ways. FRIDAY, June 10, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- People with type 2 diabetes may get some help with blood sugar control from a few commercial weight-loss programs, but conclusive evidence on most plans is lacking, a new review finds. Researchers reviewed 18 published studies. The studies looked at 10 popular, commercial weight-loss programs that involved a total of 764 people with type 2 diabetes. Three programs -- Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem and Optifast -- seemed to reduce blood sugar levels more than when people received weight-loss counseling alone, the review found. "A few of these programs may be a viable option for improving blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes and those at risk for the disease, but we need more gold-standard studies to make that claim," said review leader Dr. Zoobia Chaudhry. Chaudhry is an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In general, participants who joined a Jenny Craig program lost more than three times as much weight as the control group, and 72 percent of the participants who were taking insulin to manage their condition were able to either stop taking it or reduce the dose, compared with just 8 percent of the control group. But participants on the specially formulated Jenny Craig program for Type 2 diabetes were more successful at bringing down their blood sugar levels than those on the already-available Jenny Craig program. “What’s nice about a clinical trial like this is that all my colleagues who have patients struggling with diabetes can know there are community-based programs that are healthy” to recommend, the study’s lead researcher Cheryl Rock, Ph.D., R.D., a professor of preventive medicine at UC San Diego Medical School, told The Huffington Post. The study, funded by Jenny Craig, was published Wednesday in the American Diabetes Associations’ journal Diabetes Care. Diabetes affects 25.8 million Americans, according to the American Diabetes Association, and up to 95 percent of those cases are Type 2 diabetes. An estimated 79 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, according to data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .
