Diabetes Meal-delivery Services

Imagine cooking a meal that not only tastes good, but also is easy to make. The food is already in your refrigerator, the ingredients are premeasured, simple directions are provided, and your nutritional needs are met without too many excess calories. Welcome to the world of meal-delivery plans and meal-kit services — a popular new trend in eating and cooking that is sweeping the country and helping time-starved people get back in the kitchen. These services appeal to those who want to cook but don’t have the time to plan meals, buy ingredients, and cook dinner. It removes the anxiety many people experience trying to figure out “what’s for dinner.” How do these plans work? You start by going online and choosing from a menu of meals, from basic to gourmet. Some services deliver frozen, precooked meals that need only reheating. But the majority of services deliver meal kits with all the fresh ingredients needed to prepare a homemade meal. With rapid-delivery methods championed by Amazon, meals are shipped to your door in mini coolers containing your chosen entrees, along with premeasured and sometimes prechopped ingredients, including everything from creams and sauces to spices and garnishes. There are a wide variety of meal options — meat, pasta, fish, vegetarian — to suit anyone’s tastes and preferences. More importantly, the nutritional ingredients often are spelled out with each meal. For people living with diabetes, it’s easy to choose ones with the right level of protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, and fiber. “These meal-delivery plans are a fantastic idea to get people back in the kitchen and get to know ingredients again,” said dietitian and diabetes educator Sarah Haveman with the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. “If you’re b Continue reading >>

Losing Weight With Diabetes

Losing Weight With Diabetes

If you have diabetes, know that you are not alone. According to recent statistics, the occurrence of diabetes in the United States has reached 9.4% of children and adults - or about 30.3 million Americans. Before we go into the tips for weight loss and diabetes, it's important to understand the different types and what causes diabetes. What is Diabetes? Diabetes is a condition where the body has too much glucose, or blood sugar, in the bloodstream. Usually, the body produces insulin in response to glucose. Insulin is a hormone that moves glucose from the bloodstream into the cells, but with type 1 diabetes, the body no longer produces insulin. In type 2 diabetes, the body either may or may not be making enough insulin, however, the cells don't use the insulin properly. In either situation and without proper management, glucose can build up in the bloodstream. This excess buildup of glucose flows through the blood vessels throughout your body and then eventually can cause damage to your heart, eyes, kidneys and feet. Although both types have to do with high blood sugar, type 1 and type 2 diabetes differ in a number of ways. Type 1 diabetes, is most often diagnosed in childhood, while type 2 diabetes is more frequently diagnosed in adulthood. However, increasingly, type 2 is being seen earlier on, even being diagnosed in young children. Type 1 diabetes, unlike type 2, is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks cells in the pancreas responsible for producing insulin. The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown, but genetics do play a role, along with environmental factors such as viruses. There is no cure for type 1 diabetes, but a person can manage their condition by taking insulin injections daily. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is Continue reading >>

This Is The Eating Plan That Helped Me Lose 45 Pounds In A Year

18 Delicious High-Protein, Low-Carb Snacks This Is The Eating Plan That Helped Me Lose 45 Pounds In A Year The day her doctor told her she was at risk for developing diabetes was the day Natalie Camacho decided to make a change. Ive always been a heavy person, but I never felt motivated enough to do anything to change it. I just thought that was how I would be in life. I was a chubby child and stayed that way through my teens and early twenties, and I accepted myself as such. I was never a person who liked to work out, and was never able to stick to any workout routine . Throughout the years, I tried several diets, but nothing helped me keep the weight off. (Dance your way fit with High-Intensity Dance Cardio , the first-ever socanomics DVD!) One day at work, in the spring of 2014, I looked long and hard at myself in a full-length mirror, and couldnt believe how much I'd let myself go. The next day, I went to the doctor for a physical. He confirmed that I was morbidly obese and needed to start losing a lot of weightor I would get diabetes. Shortly after that, my parents sat me down and told me with love that it would be in my best interest to lose weight. They shared with me that I would probably feel better about myself and be healthier too. Check out some of the weirdest weight-loss trends through history: At the time, my mom was on the Jenny Craig Program and was seeing results, so I decided to give it a try. I was about to call and schedule my first consultation when, coincidentally, my mothers consultant called to confirm her next appointment. That phone call on May 31, 2014 changed my life. I joined Jenny Craig that day. I had a lot to learn from my consultant (Jenny Craig's title for weight-loss coaches). For starters, I learned that the portions I had been eati Continue reading >>

3 Popular Diet Plans May Help Ease Type 2 Diabetes, Too They seemed to help, but researchers say more information needed Please note: This article was published more than one year ago. The facts and conclusions presented may have since changed and may no longer be accurate. And "More information" links may no longer work. Questions about personal health should always be referred to a physician or other health care professional. FRIDAY, June 10, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- People with type 2 diabetes may get some help with blood sugar control from a few commercial weight-loss programs, but conclusive evidence on most plans is lacking, a new review finds. Researchers reviewed 18 published studies. The studies looked at 10 popular, commercial weight-loss programs that involved a total of 764 people with type 2 diabetes. Three programs -- Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem and Optifast -- seemed to reduce blood sugar levels more than when people received weight-loss counseling alone, the review found. "A few of these programs may be a viable option for improving blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes and those at risk for the disease, but we need more gold-standard studies to make that claim," said review leader Dr. Zoobia Chaudhry. Chaudhry is an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The researchers said it's possible that other commercial weight-loss programs may help lower blood sugar levels, but there's currently not enough evidence to say so. Chaudhry noted that there is a link between being overweight or obese and developing type 2 diabetes. She said that previous research has shown that losing even a small amount of body weight -- 5 to 10 percent -- can help lead to long-term blood sugar reductions in people with type 2 dia Continue reading >>

Experts Say These Are The 5 Most Effective Diets For Weight Loss - Delish.com

Ladies and gents, awards season is upon us, but if you're not Emma Stone or Ryan Gosling , what may be more important to you is the dreaded diet season (AKA that start-of-the-year phase when many of us resolve to finally lose a few pesky pounds). Lucky for you, US News & World Report recently ranked 38 major diet plans and gave out its own "awards" to the best of them. A panel of diet, nutrition, obesity, food psychology, diabetes and heart disease experts vetted them all, combining their own research with studies and government reports to determine which ones would take top honors. Here are the ones awarded the top five spots, though spoiler! there were quite a few ties. Proving that classics are classic for a reason, Weight Watchers took home the most coveted spot. Weight Watchers newest program, Beyond the Scale, is designed to help people eat better and exercise more, thus helping followers create a healthier lifestyle that will have a lasting effect. The program doesn't count calories, but rather assigns foods SmartPoints based on their nutritional value (higher points = less healthy), so that healthier food "costs" less and becomes more attractive. With the point system, people tend to eat food that is lower in calories, saturated fat, and sugar but higher in protein, making it easy to lose about 2 pounds per week (or so they claim). Pros: No food off-limits, flexible diet plan Cons: Can be expensive, depending on the program you choose Another oldie but a goodie, Jenny Craig, also scored high. The theory behind this diet is that in order to lose weight you have to restrict fat and calories and eat smaller portions with the help of a specified meal plan and counselor. Dieters on this plan have to follow a personalized meal plan made up of Jenny Craig pre-packaged Continue reading >>

New Jenny Craig Program Effective Against Type 2 Diabetes, Study Shows

New Jenny Craig Program Effective Against Type 2 Diabetes, Study Shows

moodboard via Getty Images A new kind of Jenny Craig diet formulated specifically to help people manage their Type 2 diabetes has demonstrated its effectiveness in a new clinical trial — so much so, that the commercial weight-loss company launched a new program based on the study’s findings. In general, participants who joined a Jenny Craig program lost more than three times as much weight as the control group, and 72 percent of the participants who were taking insulin to manage their condition were able to either stop taking it or reduce the dose, compared with just 8 percent of the control group. But participants on the specially formulated Jenny Craig program for Type 2 diabetes were more successful at bringing down their blood sugar levels than those on the already-available Jenny Craig program. “What’s nice about a clinical trial like this is that all my colleagues who have patients struggling with diabetes can know there are community-based programs that are healthy” to recommend, the study’s lead researcher Cheryl Rock, Ph.D., R.D., a professor of preventive medicine at UC San Diego Medical School, told The Huffington Post. The study, funded by Jenny Craig, was published Wednesday in the American Diabetes Associations’ journal Diabetes Care. Diabetes affects 25.8 million Americans, according to the American Diabetes Association, and up to 95 percent of those cases are Type 2 diabetes. Left untreated, both forms of diabetes can cause blindness, kidney failure, hearing loss and lower-limb amputation, as well as increase the risk for heart disease. All 227 study participants were either overweight or obese and had Type 2 diabetes. Researchers randomly divided them into three groups: the control group, the Jenny Craig program, or the Jenny Craig lower-c Continue reading >>

The Best Ways To Lose 20 Pounds

The Best Ways To Lose 20 Pounds

This story, by Jeanne Lee, originally appeared on CBS' Moneywatch.com With the holidays over, you may be looking down at the bulging evidence of too much merriment around your waistline. If you've resolved to lose weight in 2010, you might be considering signing up for a commercial diet plan, such as Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, or Jenny Craig. The TV ads, filled with celebrity endorsers and regular people holding out their enormous "old jeans" make the diet plans sound terribly tempting. Although a new FTC rule now requires testimonial ads to cite typical results, the looming question still remains: Which of these diet programs are worth your money? To find out, MoneyWatch analyzed eight of the biggest diet plans. Three are support-only plans that don't require you to buy their food, and five are food-delivery plans. We interviewed leading nutritionists and weight-loss professionals, pored through clinical studies, and tallied up membership fees and food costs to determine the ones most likely to help you slim down and to see how much you'd pay to drop 20 pounds. Our favorite for value and efficacy is Weight Watchers, designed to help you change your eating habits for good. Nutrisystem is the least expensive meal delivery plan we reviewed (Medifast is cheaper, but you have to provide one meal a day on your own). And the silver-spoon award undoubtedly goes to In The Zone Delivery, a white-glove service for people who'll spare no expense to drop the pounds. Here's how the plans stack up. See the handy chart at the bottom of the page for a side-by-side comparison. Weight Watchers Cost: Choose the $39.95 monthly pass, which includes unlimited meetings and online support. If you won't go to meetings, the best online-only deal is the three-month $65 plan (with automatic mon Continue reading >>

Are Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem & Jenny Craig Really Healthy?

Are Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem & Jenny Craig Really Healthy?

Are Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem & Jenny Craig Really Healthy? For far too long, popular diets have been about one thing, and one thing only: losing weight. Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, and Jenny Craig are three of the biggest diet companies leading todays market. While these weight loss companies may help folks lose weight , at least in the short-term, do they actually lead to better health, disease prevention, improved nutrition, and long-term lifestyle changes? Weight-loss should never be the only goal in making positive diet changes...and a diet plans success shouldnt be weighed, excuse the pun, exclusively by the numbers on your scale. The truth is: major diet companies have major sales goals; the more people they can make their products appeal to, the more products they sell. Great for them, but not necessarily healthy for dieters. Foods with mass appeal, low-calorie or not, dont usually go hand-in-hand with health. After all...if foods with mass appeal (i.e: ice cream) were actually doing a good job at keeping people healthy, there wouldnt be so many nutrition-related epidemics today . Lets take a look at how three of the leading weight loss companies fare in terms of offering truly healthy diets... Weight Watchers is a diet plan based on a points system: foods are assigned points based on calories and dieters get a certain amount of points each day. Dieters can use their own foods, or they can buy pre-packaged meals made by the company. The healthiest part of the Weight Watchers diet is that it encourages unlimited eating of fruits and veggies -- a good thing. The downside here is that it doesnt specify the important nutritional differences between say, potatoes and phytochemical-rich sweet potatoes . The diet is structured around popular foods that are low-ca Continue reading >>
