Merck Results Underscore Need To Go Big Or Go Home In Diabetes Market

Looking at the earnings posted by Merck & Co. (MRK), I could not help but compare and contrast them with what Sanofi (SNY) said this morning. Like Sanofi had with Lantus, Merck has a mega-blockbuster with Januvia. Just as Lantus was getting long in the tooth and facing patent expiration so too is Januvia. The main difference is how each company planned for life beyond their respective mega-blockbusters. While Sanofi tried and so far, failed to replace Lantus with Toujeo, Merck is taking a different tac with Januvia. Take a look at this passage from the earnings release; “At the 76th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association in June, Merck and Pfizer PFE -0.05% announced that two pivotal Phase 3 studies of ertugliflozin, an investigational oral SGLT-2 inhibitor for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes, met their primary endpoints, showing significant reductions in A1C (a measure of average blood glucose). The companies continue to expect to submit New Drug Applications to the FDA for ertugliflozin as a monotherapy and two fixed-dose combination tablets (ertugliflozin plus JANUVIA [sitagliptin], and ertugliflozin plus metformin) by the end of 2016.” Now there is nothing exciting about having another SGLT2 come to market, especially since it will be the fourth SGLT2. Janumet -- Is It Worth The Cost?

Member GD w/3 pregnancies, now Type 2 dx 06/08 Despite round 2 with another doc who isn't quite a fit, I do have questiosn about his recommendation to switch to Janumet. I have to pay full price on meds until I reach my insanely high deductible for my high deductible health plan, so I am questioning whether its worth it -- I pay $12.99 a month for metformin, and janumet would be $185 a month. Ouch! I'd love to hear from people who take Janumet and whether it has resulted in significant improvements for you. I realize the januvia part is supposed to provide a protective effect to some degree for progression of diabetes and works in some different ways from metformin, but I'm not sure its worth it? I really would suggest asking your doctor for at least 30 days worth of samples to see how you get on.
