I just had a frightening experience. A severe hypoglycemic, I took my regular 5 units of R Humulin 30 minutes before lunch. Instead of my normal sandwich and milk at lunch, I drank a glass of Slim Fast with milk. I carefully read the label and figured out that it was almost identical to the sandwich in calories, carbs and sugars. Later that afternoon I laid down for a nap and, after a couple of hours, my wife was unable to wake me. She knew it was a low, but was unable to force anything down me, as I was virtually comatose. The paramedics arrived shortly and measured my blood sugar at 22 mg/dl. They are not allowed to give an injection, so they could not administer Glucagon, but rushed me to a nearby hospital where they started me on an IV of glucose. Even then, it was over an hour before they could wake me. I am a constant reader of Diabetes Health magazine and have never read anything that would have warned me of such an experience. My doctor thinks that Slim Fast acted very rapidly, and was gone before the insulin wore offleaving me extremely low. I write this as a warning to others who might not know to consider the rapidity of absorption of sugars. I am 69 years old and have been a type 1 for 30 years. Is Slim Fast Ok For A Diabetic?

Diabetics must note the carbohydrate content of food while attempting to consume adequate protein, fat and vitamins and minerals. Slim fast is okay for diabetics as long as blood glucose levels can be maintained. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce insulin, and therefore is often insulin-dependent. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body produces too little insulin or the cells do not respond to insulin. This type may or may not be dependent on insulin. Insulin-dependent diabetes requires careful monitoring of food intake and units of insulin injected. One unit insulin is required for every 15 grams of carbohydrates consumed. The strawberry flavored Slim Fast Optima contains 245 calories, 12 grams of protein, five grams of fat, and 38 grams of carbohydrates. The nutrient content states that one can of Slim Fast accounts for 2 1/2 carbohydrates, 1 1/2 protein and 1/2 of a fat exchange. While Slim Fast is fortified with many vitamins and minerals, it does not contain the same benefits achieved from fruits and vegetables, such as satiety and minimal effects on glycemic index. If Slim Fast must be consumed consider one can to be equal to 2 1/2 Units of insulin. It will also account for 2 1/2 carbohydrate exchange. For better alternatives to Slim Fast, consider replacing with half a sandwich or beef vegetable soup and salad, which offer many nutrients with fewer carbohydrates. Q: I have type 2 diabetes. Is SlimFast, the diet drink, good for diabetes? Despite claims that it helps with weight loss, a SlimFast shake is not a good choice for people with diabetes. One serving contains 25 grams of carbohydrate, 5 of which come from fiber. Although this isn't extremely high, the product is sweetened with both sugar and fructose, which are listed as third and fifth among the ingredients, respectively. SlimFast is also pretty low in protein, providing only 10 grams per can. Studies have shown that moderate to high protein intake helps reduce appetite, increases metabolic rate more than carbs or protein, and can help prevent loss of muscle mass during weight loss and the aging process. A better alternative is to make your own high-protein, low-carb shake using protein powder, a tablespoon of almond butter or peanut butter, unsweetened almond or coconut milk, and a sugar-free sweetener. The headline is a bit misleading. We have previously known diabetes is reversible with low calorie diets. This study was notable for two things: (1) finding that this holds true even six years into mild diabetes (previous studies were on much more recent diagnoses). This is useful information because of the widely held misconception that type 2 diabetes is just a disease of insulin insensitivity. Actually, over time, islet amyloid peptide is deposited in the pancreas where it slowly kills off beta cells and removes your ability to actually produce insulin. In effect (though not literally nor in every particular), type 2 dm slowly transitions into type 1. So its useful to know that six years out the pancreas is functioning well enough to allow dietary reversal. (2) being funded by a private company pushing a meal replacement-and-weight loss coaching program, which used this private program as the intervention arm. Turns out that, yes, if you live on slimfast for 3 months youll lose weight and your diabetes will calm down. That Lancet didnt exactly lead with that latter point, oddly enough. The co is pushing for the NHS to fund their program in more locations, under the argument that bariatric surgery isnt available to everyone. This is part of their PR push. Typically, people with diabetes don't need any more protein than people who don't have diabetes. There are, however, times when less protein isbetter. Protein is one of three essential macronutrients; the other twoare fat and carbohydrate. These are needed in large amounts to maintain health and vital functions. The body uses protein to build, repair, and maintain most of your body's tissues and organs. Proteins are also necessary for immune system function and they help some additional physiological processes. As long as your kidneys are healthy, about 15 to 20 percent of your daily calories should come from protein. This is the same amount suggested for a balanced non-diabetic diet. About 45 to 50 percent of your caloric intake should come from carbohydrates and the rest should come from fat. A person who needs 2,000 calories per day needs about 75 to 100 grams protein per day. It would be more accurate, however, to use the standard formula of 0.8 grams protein per kilogram of body weight. To do the kilogram conversion, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2. For instance, if you weigh 150 pounds, that is equal to 68 kilograms. Divide that by 0.8 and you get a protein goal of 85 grams. Designed to provide a meal's nutrition, they are full of protein, carb, fat, and vitamins. If you have nothing else to eat, they can keep you alive. Used under close supervision, they'll do what they say they'll do -- help keep you slim, properly fed, and well nourished. But there's a problem -- and it's not with the products -- it's with us. Hello everyone..I have a question for you. My sister in law has been recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and is a vegetarian.She is overweight,has never exercised and since the doctor told her she needs to lose weight she has decided on her own to drink slimfast 2-3 times a day. She says it is perfectly alright to do so but I am worried that she is not taking care of herself and isnt following Dr's orders. She takes oral meds to treat her diabetes. She also refuses to consult a diatician to work on a healthy diet that will work around her vegetarianism.
