This question is most often asked by people looking to get the most amount of fat burn out of their cardio program. Obviously we would like to do that without sacrificing precious muscle mass. Since we're trying to get to the bottom of the most effective way to time our cardio program. We want to make sure that doing the cardio is actually burning fat. Doing the cardio before your workout, unless you're working out on an empty stomach, is going to burn a mix of carbs and dietary fat. That means that you're essentially going to be burning what you ate earlier that day during your cardio workout not fat. In fact it'll probably take you a full half hour to just start burning body fat especially with steady state cardio. The other downside to doing cardio before a workout is a

This topic is now archived and is closed to further replies. Best time to take Metformin before or after? First, When should we take metformin before a meal or after a meal? I always have understood to take them with food??? I am on 1500 mg Metformin. I take one 500 pill in the morning after I eat one after lunch and one after Dinner/or later in the evening if I forget at dinner. I really think I need to go on 2000 mg per day. I have high readings, like 127-150 in the mornings. The readings all vary because of what I eat at dinner or before bedtime. I fix a good dinner and eat a little of everything. Even if it is white potato, bread, desert or etc. I almost know that is what puts my readings up in the mornings. Sometimes I eat too much potato. I am always hungry and love to eat. I only weigh 106 lbs. I wonder if that might allow me to have higher reading??...smile! Hi Betty: If you're having higher morning readings, try taking your dinner metformin just before bedtime and see if that helps. As long as your stomach isn' Continue reading >>

Metformin - Before, After or With food?

When is the best time to take Metformin? I was told originally to take it after food. I'm on 3x500mg a day. When I told my doctor that I don't eat breakfast, he said take one in the morning on an empty stomach anyway.
I've recently started taking my metformin half way through my meals. This seems to stop the nasty side effects that you get with metformin, but I *think* it's reducing the effectiveness of the drug.
Now I've read that taking it an hour or two BEFORE eating is the best way to take the drug. The same source (lost in my browser history now.... ) said that taking it with food can decrease the effectiveness of Metformin. (Mt Dad is also on Met - it was HIS doctor that recomended taking it WITH food. Mine recomended taking it AFTER food).
Anyone got any experience of this? What it would mean is that I would have approx. 1000mg in my system (1 met when I wake up, and 1 before lunch) before I've eaten anything. I eat lunch at around 12:00 (lo-carb, of course!).

  2. tubolard

The advice on the packet is to take it with food to reduce the side effects, having said that I take my breakfast and evening meal metformin anything up to an hour before I actually eat. I say this with particular pleasure - I no longer take a lunchtime metformin - but when I did, it was with the first bite.
I can't say that I've noticed any difference in readings no matter when I take the metformin, but have to say that I thought that food would interfere with absorption of the metformin - so have always taken it either very early in the meal or before eating.
    Regards, Tubs.

Hi, I am new here and I have to say I just followed the instructions and take one after my evening meal. I don't appear to have had any side-effects apart from a weird gurggling stomach and bad wind (although my kids say that's nothing new)

What Time Of Day Do You Take Metformin?

Registration is fast, simple and absolutely free so please, join our community todayto contribute and support the site. This topic is now archived and is closed to further replies. I am on two 500 mg. Metformin twice a day. I'm unsure of when to take them, as I've read so many different things. Some people take them before eating, some after. The thing that most concerns me is what time of day should I be taking them? My bottle just says two twice day. Is it best to take them with breakfast early in the a.m. (I eat at 7:00 a.m.) and then wait until dinner (which varies for me--I don't eat "dinner" at a set time, but it is usually around 4 p.m. or so). When do YOU take Metforming (if that is the drug you are using). Thanks for any advice you can give. I've been taking Metformin earlier in the day (around 3 p.m.) and I eat snacks before bed (low carb), and also oftentimes take p.m. pain meds. I have found that my morning glucose reading is often too high (137-140). I can't sleep if my stomach is growling, so I have to eat something before I can sleep! It actually becomes a fairly personal thing as to when it suits you best to take your Metformin and depends on a few things. Some peop Continue reading >>

Metformin before food vs Metformin after food

I forget to take metformin in the morning after food. On multiple occasions. Now i pop out a tablet and a place it on the plate and consume after food.
I was curious to know if i could have metformin at start of a meal instead of post food? If not why? Does any one know about this?

  2. jwags

I think the only reason they recommend it before meals is to help with the side effects. I never take it at meals. I take it before bed and in the middle of the night and then when I wake up. So none of those times are with food.

  3. Ken S

It works better when taken on an empty stomach but this of course can worsen certain GI side effects.

Improved Effect Of Glibenclamide On Administration Before Breakfast.

1. Eur J Clin Pharmacol. 1982;21(5):403-8. Improved effect of glibenclamide on administration before breakfast. Sartor G, Lundquist I, Melander A, Scherstn B, Whlin-Boll E. In an attempt to assess whether intake of glibenclamide before meals wouldimprove its therapeutic capacity, the present investigation compared the effectof glibenclamide 2.5 mg t.i.d. given before and together with meals. In addition, these effects were compared with that of glibenclamide given as a single morning dose of 7.5 mg. The subjects studied were six Type 2 diabetics not previouslyexposed to sulphonylurea drugs. Irrespective of dosage and mode ofadministration, addition of glibenclamide to a standardized breakfast, lunch and dinner enhanced plasma IRI concentrations and reduced blood glucoseconcentrations as compared to administration of meals without the drug. Thedifferent modes of glibenclamide administration did not differ significantly withrespect to IRI responses. However the blood glucose reduction after breakfast wassignificantly greater when glibenclamide 2.5 mg had been given before the mealthan when 2.5 or 7.5 mg were given with the meal; a similar, but non-significant tendency was observed af Continue reading >>

When you eat, your pancreas releases a hormone called insulin. Insulin moves sugar (glucose) from your blood to your cells for energy or storage. If you take insulin, you may need some at mealtime to help lower your blood sugar after you eat. But even between meals, you need insulin in small amounts to help keep blood sugar stable. This is where long-acting insulin comes in. If you have diabetes, either your pancreas can’t produce enough (or an ...
