Is Glucerna For Diabetics?

How Does Glucerna Benefit Your Diabetes Care Plan?

How Does Glucerna Benefit Your Diabetes Care Plan?

I once had an endo tell me to eat a slow-release bar every night before bed because I was having trouble with overnight lows. Even as a teenager I couldn't understand eating a nasty-tasting bar instead of real food. I used to use Glucerna, but didn't like it that much. Now I use Boost Glucose Control. Still, I can't imagine confusing either of them with a dessert substitute. I also get lots of e-mail from Glucerna and it goes straight to my junk mail. The words "For people with Diabetes" is misleading and they should take it off. Why would you drink a slow-release Glucerna shake with 27grams of carbs? It will not raise a low fast enough and with all that carbs raise your blood sugar levels over a longer time than what a fast acting insulin will work(meaning more than one injection to lower your blood sugar after drinking one of those).I think they just want a piece of the billions that we already pay to stay alive. I used Glucerna when I had my wisdom teeth extracted. Was an easy way to consume calories on a liquid diet, and it doesn't spike the blood sugar like the other ones do. It tastes like crap though, and I was happy to return to solid foods and throw my remaining supply in the trash. I have been on Glucerna twice per doctors orders on a 6 time a day regimen. 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm, 7pm, 10pm.After Diagnosis:1. To find my median2. To control blood sugars3. It is used for diabetics with gastroparesisAfter my cholecystectomy:1. To help people who have acute/chronic pancreatitis keep theirs calm while transitiioning from no food to food2. It is EXTREMELY digestible and the least irritating to your pancreas3. Because of the low low sugar, it doesn't engage the liver as much, which helps calm it for excess glucagon secretion. I use Glucerna shakes or Atkins shakes for b Continue reading >>

I have been doing the shake in the morning for about a month now but have just started the cereal for lunch last week. I will say that my cat just luvvvvs the shake. He makes sure I get up at the right time and share my shake with him (just a couple of licks for him) and take my shot. I am on insulin, 38u in the morn and 26u in the eve. I was diagnosed last year in Dec. and went on insulin shots then. For 6 months I kept my weight about the same, then all of a sudden my last Dr. visit I was shocked that I had gained 10 lbs. I have been trying for a month now to get rid of that extra 10 lbs with no success not even one lb lost. I don't under stand because I had been the same weight for several years before that. Does Glucerna Work For Diabetes?

Does Glucerna Work For Diabetes?

Glucerna is a brand of meal replacement shakes and bars. It is made by Abbott, and designed specifically for people with type 2 diabetes. Those with prediabetes and type 1 diabetes may also use Glucerna. These products are low in calories and sugar and high in protein. They also contain artificial sweeteners such as sucralose and acesulfame potassium, which may cause potential health risks. When Glucerna is used as part of a healthy diabetes diet plan it offers some promise in terms of weight management and blood sugar (glucose) control. Though the products may provide some assistance, be aware of possible complications. When it comes to diabetes, the goal is to keep your blood sugar within your target range. High blood glucose (hyperglycemia) poses numerous health risks. Problems include conditions like blurry vision, nerve damage, and kidney disease. When not controlled, diabetes may lead to serious complications. Being overweight is one risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Eating a healthier diet can help manage weight. It’s important to monitor carb intake when you have diabetes because carbohydrates directly raise blood sugar. Fast digesting carbohydrates, such as soda, can lead to sugar spikes. Glucerna contains carbohydrates that are less likely to lead to glucose spikes. Over time, replacing a fast-acting carbohydrate snack with a Glucerna product might lead to diabetes symptom improvement. Meal replacement bars and shakes can help people lose weight by reducing calorie intake. Nutritional shakes and bars are known for having low calorie counts. But most brands contain a lot of sugar, making them an unhealthy choice for people with diabetes. Glucerna is different because its products are lower on the glycemic index and have less sugar. The Skinny On Shakes For People With Diabetes

The Skinny On Shakes For People With Diabetes

1 / 6 Learn All About the Best Weight Loss Shakes for Diabetes Diabetes is an increasingly common condition that causes blood sugar levels to rise higher than normal. There are several types of diabetes, but type 2 diabetes is the most common form. Type 2 diabetes is often linked to being overweight or obese and must be medically managed to prevent serious diabetes complications. Along with making lifestyle changes and taking medication, people with diabetes must keep a watchful eye on their blood glucose levels and the foods they eat throughout each day. Whether you’re watching your weight or looking for a quick diabetes-friendly meal on the go, a meal replacement shake may be a good — or not so good — option for those with diabetes. Of course, a healthy diet of whole foods is always best, but shakes can provide a nice “safety net” for when a healthy meal is not an option. While meal replacement shakes may fill you up, even the best weight loss shakes don’t provide complete dietary nutrition. If you rely on weight loss or meal replacement shakes regularly, you will still need a healthy balance of real food each day, including: Fat-free or low-fat dairy Fresh fruits and vegetables, especially nonstarchy vegetables Lean protein Legumes, like beans and peas Nuts Seafood Soy Whole grains Also, not all meal replacement shakes are created equal; even the best weight loss shakes designed for people with diabetes may fall short when it comes to complete nutrition. For example, the Glucerna Rich Chocolate Shake is gluten-free and great for people who are lactose intolerant. But the Glucerna Shake is only enough to replace a moderate snack or part of a meal — not an entire meal. You will need to read the label and find out what’s missing when it comes to fat, pro Continue reading >>

5 Reasons Why Diabetics Should Avoid Glucerna Nutritional Shakes

5 Reasons Why Diabetics Should Avoid Glucerna Nutritional Shakes

Glucerna has been heavily promoted by Abbot Laboratories as a healthy meal replacement for folks with Type 2 diabetes. Many doctors and dieticians are also recommending the supplement to their diabetic clients especially those who have a hectic lifestyle and may not have the time to cook a proper meal. On Glucerna’s website it says, “That’s where great-tasting Glucerna shakes and bars can help. Glucerna contains CARBSTEADY®, unique blends of slow-release carbohydrates that can help minimize your blood sugar spikes.” When some of my clients ask me if they should Glucerna as a meal replacement shake and/or to drink it when they are in a rush and don’t have time for a low carb meal, I always tell them to avoid Glucerna completely if they want to not only control their Type 2 diabetes but also to reverse the condition and be completely medication free. So, why do I give such advice when doctors and dieticians actually tell them it’s perfectly fine for Type 2 diabetics to consume Glucerna? Very simple, I don’t think any doctor or dietician reads the ingredients list and the nutritional profile of the supplement at all. The Nutritional Profile of Glucerna Let’s first take a look at the nutritional profile of the Glucerna Advanced Shake. At a serving size of 8 fl oz or 237 ml it has only 3 grams of fiber but 27 grams of carbohydrates with 6 grams of sugar. We minus the 3 grams of dietary fiber which leaves 24 grams of carbs nett; so even though it’s listed on the nutritional profile that there’s only 6 grams of sugar, in reality it’s a full 24 grams. Now ALL these 24 grams of carbohydrates will be metabolized into glucose and give a blood sugar spike! Of all the macronutrients carbohydrates spike blood sugar the most, followed by protein and lastly fat. Continue reading >>

Glucerna, Enterex Or Ensure Which One Is Best For Diabetes Nutrition

Glucerna, Enterex Or Ensure Which One Is Best For Diabetes Nutrition

Glucerna, Enterex and Ensure are all touted as nutritious shakes packed with vitamins and minerals. They are also marketed as meal or snack replacements suitable for anyone who is concerned about meeting daily nutritional needs. Whether you are sick, have dietary restrictions or you just have a poor appetite, they can assist inmeeting micro nutrient goals. To be honest these shakes come in quite handy if you are pressed for time or on the go. While Glucerna and Ensure are produced by the same company, Abbott Nutrition, they serve a slightly different purpose. Glucerna is primarily designed for persons with diabetes while Ensure is marketed as a healthy meal replacement or supplement that can help you stay healthy, active, and energetic. Enterex is also created for persons with diabetes and can also be used as a meal replacement or nutritional supplement. Glucerna claims that it has been clinically proven to help minimize blood sugar spikes. This is done by what they call CARBSTEADY which is basically low glycemic carbohydrates. The glycemic index (GI) rates carbohydrates according to how quickly they raise the glucose level of the blood. The following snippet is taken from the Glucerna website. Glucerna shakes can be used as a meal or partial meal replacement, or snack, as part of a diabetes management plan. For example, Glucerna shakes can be used in place of a skipped meal or to replace an unhealthy food choice. Shakes have also been used to replace a meal to support a weight loss plan. For individuals who need extra calories and protein, such as those with, or at risk of, malnutrition, Glucerna shakes can be used to supplement their diet with additional nutrition to help meet nutrient requirements. Enterex boasts about the no added sugar factor of their shake with t Continue reading >>

Voice Of The Diabetic

Voice Of The Diabetic

We're always concerned with what we can, can't, should, and should not eat. We pass by the shelf, and in big, bold letters it says "For Diabetics!" Is it? Should we add this one to our meal plan? What about that one? And so on ... From Slimfast on down, there are a lot of liquid "meal replacers" out there. All have carb counts; some have diabetic exchanges. Strictly speaking, you can factor such a product into your meal plan. Should you? Be careful. All of the ones I looked at: Slimfast, Ensure, Ensure Plus, Ensure Glucerna, CarboRite At Last, Diabetic Care Choice, and Enterex Diabetic, are "loaded" foods. Designed to provide a meal's nutrition, they are full of protein, carb, fat, and vitamins. If you have nothing else to eat, they can keep you alive. Used under close supervision, they'll do what they say they'll do -- help keep you slim, properly fed, and well nourished. But there's a problem -- and it's not with the products -- it's with us. In America, we're accustomed to reaching for food because we feel like it, and eating 'til we're full. Undisciplined snacking. It's dangerous. It's why we're the fattest nation on the planet. It's the "see-food" diet. What's wrong with treating a can of Glucerna, or a container of Diabetic Care Choice, as an impulsive snack? Lots. For starters, there's 290 calories in that can; 100 of them from fat. That's not a snack; that's your lunch! If you start chugging Slimfasts, you'll go the opposite direction, like: fatfast. If you're going to "eat 'til you're full," don't be using these -- as you can run up 500+ calories before you even notice. If you're a "nervous eater," I don't think you should keep this stuff in your house. What should you do with them? What is their niche? All of them are carefully-formulated, medically-tested, h Continue reading >>

Does Glucerna Help Control Blood Sugar Levels

Does Glucerna Help Control Blood Sugar Levels

I use the chocolate peanut Glucerna bars prior to exercising, if i have a low BSL, or if I'm not able to eat a small meal right away. My BSL is fine after eating one of them. I've never tried the shakes. The hospital had me drink the shakes with breakfast and supper daily while I was in for treatment for MRSA and wound Care. Then I used them while I was on the infamous liquid diet the day before a colonoscopy. (They were included on my list of approved liquids for a person with diabetes). They kept my BG OK. But lost my taste for them after having so many over a couple of months. The chocolate tasted the best. But all flavors seemed to leave a slightly chemical after taste that many vitamin fortified things have. Hubby finished off the butter pecan ones I had left over. They might be my grab in an emergency option. I would need to check my BG under more normal conditions (i.e. no really nasty infection and no real nasty wounds). Haven't tried the bars yet.I would have to look at the nutrition and ingredients for them. Haven't really checked them out lately. But I think there were too many ingredients I would rather avoid when I looked them over several months ago. Like others, I prefer a small meal that is balanced, but when I can't eat, I use a shake called Premier Protein which is better for me because I got high BGs on Glucerna. Mine comes in Vanilla or Chocolate; I prefer the Vanilla flavored shake, though I love chocolate flavoring in general. I have tried both the shakes and snacks. While the shakes taste good, they don't quench my hunger at all. There is something in the snacks that upset my digestive tract, so I don't eat them. Glucerna has chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and butter pecan flavors. I have discovered that the chocolate and butter pecan is high in Continue reading >>

While you will have to stick to a routine, this doesnt mean you have to be deprived. Generally, a meal plan for diabetes should have a mix of carbs, proteins (both lean meats or alternates, such as legumes) and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Eating at regular times and spacing your meals properly are also important to keep your blood sugar in check. Your dietitian can help you build a meal plan according to your health goals, food preferences, and lifestyle. Remember, no single plan works for everyone. Enjoy your meals! How much you eat is just as important as what you choose to eat. As a rule of thumb, vegetables should fill up half of your plate, starchy foods should fill up a quarter, and lean meats and alternates the remaining quarter. Complete your meal with a dairy product and a fruit. Using a standard dinner plate, follow the plate method in the image to control your portion sizes.
