Whether it’s best to eat before or after a workout has been debated for decades, and the decision becomes even more complicated if you have diabetes. “For someone with diabetes, they not only have to think about fuel for exercise, but they also have to think about glycemic control,” says Monet S. Bland, a clinical exercise physiologist and diabetes educator with Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. Exercise impacts your blood sugar, so you need to make sure your levels aren’t too high when you start exercising, but also not so low that they’ll plummet during your workout. So while a study published in November 2010 in the Journal of Physiology found that not eating before exercise helped people burn fat, people with diabetes need to maintain blood sugar levels, and should plan to eat before, after, and sometimes even during exercise, Bland says. That’s the general recommendation, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. You need to keep an eye on how your body responds, since “some people are more sensitive to the effects of exercise versus others,” Bland says. Not sure where to start? Bland recommends working with an endocrinologist or an exercise physiologist to establish blood glucose targets and an exercise plan that’s safe for you. No matter what, you’ll want to check your blood sugar before working out so you know how to fuel up. Your goal is a level greater than 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) — but always skip the workout if your blood sugar is at or higher than 250 mg/dL and ketosis is present, or greater than 300 mg/dL without ketosis. Suicide rates are on the rise, a public health issue with complex roots As the nation processed the news of chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdains and designer Kate Spades suicides last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new data showing that suicide rates rose in almost every state over the past 17 years. At nearly 50 percent, New Hampshires rate increase stands at the top, second only to Vermont and North Dakota. And Cheshire County isnt immune, as recent obituaries and the death last year of a beloved local law enforcement official help to illustrate. A 2013 report by the states Suicide Prevention Council notes that a yearly breakdown of county-by-county suicide rates is too small to know if theyre growing regionally. But data from the New Hampshire medical examiner tallied 18 deaths by suicide in Cheshire County last year and 12 in 2016. For each person who died this way, many others have told a social service agency or the police that they have thought of taking their life. Keene police responded to 107 calls from people contemplating or attempting suicide last year. As of Monday, the agency had responded to 35 such calls since January. The Samaritans of Keene, an organization that runs a suicide hotline, receives an average of three crisis calls a day, according to Executive Director Carmen Trafton. She said the hotline got about 1,700 calls last year. At first glance, its hard to understand how something like that could happen in New Hampshire, said Gary Barnes, executive and clinical director of Maps Counseling Services, an agency with locations in Keene and Peterborough that provides mental health counseling. So ok, I know C4 has been around for a while, and I've seen reviews on this site about it, but hey, why not. I'm a type-1 Diabetic, so I have never used a preworkout prior to this week. I've always been conscious of products doing weird things to my blood sugar. To note, for those of you unfamiliar with Type 1 vs Type 2, I have a dead pancreas. My immune system killed its ability to produce insulin. I am 5'10 and weigh 186 lbs. I've been a lurker for a while and decided to give C4 a try, as I figured why not. I work very long hours and want to maximize my time in the gym. They also were on a 2 for 1 sale at Costco, so I figured I may as well give it a shot. I am also taking Animal Pak(1 a day), Dymatize Iso, and Dymatize Amino 3000. Serving Size: 1 scoop 20 minutes pre work out I also take ritalin LA for ADD, so I did not want to over do it and put more stress on my Cardiovascular Sytem than needed. Taste: Very good. I had the fruit punch, and it tasted sweet. I've always had a sweet tooth, and this tasted like a mix of cherry kool-aid and red powerade. Results: I warmed up with 10 minutes on the treadmill and then had one of the most complete, and taxing Chest workouts I've had in a long time. I was pushing myself on every rep, and challenged myself from start to finish. After I had completed my workout, I honestly don't think I could've done any more. It was exactly what I was looking for in a prework out: energy, and a lift in mood to push myself to my goals. Today I am feeling very sore, but I am looking forward to leg day tomorrow. I give it a 9/10, simply because as my first preworkout experience, I don't know what else is out there. I definitely plan on using this on workout days for the immediate future. Low Testosterone Levels and Type 2 Diabetes A new study has found that a significant number of men who have Type 2 diabetes may have low testosterone levels, a condition that can trigger erectile dysfunction but can be treated with testosterone replacement therapy. The study, published in the April 2007 issue of the journal Diabetes Care, looked at 355 men over the age of 30 who had Type 2 diabetes. The researchers found that 17% of these men had low testosterone levels, and an additional 25% had borderline low levels of the male sex hormone. Obesity, as measured by body-mass index and waist circumference, was strongly associated with low testosterone levels in men. Of the men in the study who were found to have low testosterone levels, 70% reported erectile dysfunction and 63% reported low sex drive. The major symptoms of low testosterone levels tend to be low sex drive, reduced erection strength, reduced physical strength, fatigue, and changes in mood. As we revealed in the previous blog entry Diabetes and Erectile Dysfunction: Two New Studies, erectile dysfunction is reported by about half of men with diabetes, with increasing age being an important factor. Testosterone levels also decline in men with age. Other factors that may play a role in causing erectile dysfunction in men with diabetes are impaired circulation from blood vessel damage and neuropathy , or nerve damage. A combination of factors is often responsible for erectile dysfunction. Other studies have shown that men with erectile dysfunction who do not improve with use of sildenafil (brand name Viagra) are often found to have low testosterone levels. I want to get it out of the way right away so I don't have to worry about it after work, because it cuts right into my nap time. So I was wondering if you guys take any pre-workout at all? I'm thinking about just caffeine pills because of how cheap they are from this article I was reading. This was the article btw. Plus, I like the fact that I don't have to worry about the other stuff that comes in it. I think caffeine pills will wreak havoc with your naptime. a good cup of morning coffee normal kind will be good... nothing else is required ... some times i eat before doing my 4 hours fitness sometimes I dont... well but the healthier to a diabetic is I guess to eat some before... but if one wants to use ketosis it is better not to eat untill after... like not having eaten since the dinner the night before... then there is ketosis if not eating breakfast before.. and eating low carb in general With respect, and with great experience of trying (and variously failing) to inject more exercise into my life for about 30 years - your post raises a few red flags. You are struggling to get up in the morning You want your gym out of the way so it doesn't interfere with the rest of your life You are considering drugs (if you count caffeine a drug, which I do) to 'motivate' and 'enable' you I think all of those suggest that no matter how many caffiene pills you pop, your gym career is unlikely to flourish. No matter how enthusiastic, dedicated and motivated, those early starts plus full time work, can be brutal - and I'm thinking that your motivation is at a lower level than you hope.
