I JUST GOT A REFILL ON MY METFORMIN. THE NEW NAME ON IT IS AMNEAL AND IT IS LIKE NOT TAKING ANYTHING AT ALL. MY SUGARS HAVE BEEN IN THE 340 RANGE. MY SUGARS HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS HIGH. I BELIEVE MY PREVIOUS BRAND NAME WAS EITHER SOLCO OR WATSON. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT I SHOULD DO? ## Hello, Dooda! How are you doing? Has there been any change? With sugar levels that high, you need to see your doctor. If the pills from Amneal aren't working for you, you may need to switch to a different medication for awhile. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Metformin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, flatulence, stomach pain and hypoglycemia. Are you on any other medications? ## I have the same problem with Amneal Metformin...it's like I'm not taking anything at all. ... I had my prescription filled and it says 500mg er tab amne, underneath was typed substituted for metformin 500 mg er tab wats, what's the difference ## Hello, Linda! How are you? Sorry about the confusion, pharmacies should really be a bit more precise, but I'm happy to clear this up for you. :-) The only difference is the manufacturer, the original one was manufactured by Watson Pharmaceuticals, which is what the wats stands for and the new one is manufactured by Amneal Pharmaceuticals, as designated by the amne. Rather than saying it's a substitute, they should really have just put a notice on it that it is the same medication, but may look different than that which you'd received before. Learn more Metformin ER details here. Is there anything else I can help with? ... i have b taken for 2 week and my belly look like i going to blow out ## Hello Anita! How are you? I do not believe Sumatriptan (Dr Reddys) is gf. Made me sooo sick! I even filled out a complaint form with the FDA. Or if it is gf it runs on the same conveyor with products that are not gf. My wife of 51 years was recently diagnosed with the beginning of macular degeneration. Her ophthalmologist at Harborview Medical Center (Eye Institute) in Seattle strongly suggested that she begin taking AREDS vitamins/minerals in the exact dosage as the AREDS study used. The handout she received showed that PreserVision by Bausch and Lomb was one of the preferred and was available in local stores such as pharmacies and Wal-mart. It seemed clear that Viteyes was the preferred vitamin/mineral that they recommended. It is not available locally, and must be purchased online or by phone. PreserVision does not list any of the excipient ingredients most likely to have gluten. No pharmacist could determine whether it was gluten-free or not. Calls to Bausch and Lomb were equivocal: "We think that it is gluten-free, but the medical department has the authoritative say on that." Viteyes has no Internet information on its gluten-free statusyes or no. There are a number of other manufacturers of this vitamin/mineral product. But none of them are included on this list. I think it would be a very helpful service if we could know for certain which of these AREDS formula products are, indeed, gluten-free. I take oxycodone 15 mg. My pharmacist changed brands to Qualitest (Endo's Generic I think). I am gluten intolerant. First thing I got a rash and started having intestinal problems. The rash went away and I continued to take them. I got to a point where the absorption of any of my medications was significantly reduced to a point where I finally decided to stop taking them, and was surprised that I Continue reading >>

Dailymed - Metformin Hydrochloride - Metformin Tablet

Metformin is an antihyperglycemic agent which improves glucose tolerance in patients with type 2 diabetes, lowering both basal and postprandial plasma glucose. Its pharmacologic mechanisms of action are different from other classes of oral antihyperglycemic agents. Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. Unlike sulfonylureas, metformin does not produce hypoglycemia in either patients with type 2 diabetes or normal subjects (except in special circumstances, see PRECAUTIONS ) and does not cause hyperinsulinemia. With metformin therapy, insulin secretion remains unchanged while fasting insulin levels and day-long plasma insulin response may actually decrease. The absolute bioavailability of a Metformin HCl 500 mg tablet given under fasting conditions is approximately 50% to 60%. Studies using single oral doses of Metformin HCl 500 mg to 1500 mg, and 850 mg to 2550 mg, indicate that there is a lack of dose proportionality with increasing doses, which is due to decreased absorption rather than an alteration in elimination. Food decreases the extent of and slightly delays the absorption of metformin, as shown by approximately a 40% lower mean peak plasma concentration (Cmax), a 25% lower area under the plasma concentration versus time curve (AUC), and a 35 minute prolongation of time to peak plasma concentration (Tmax) following administration of a single 850 mg tablet of metformin with food, compared to the same tablet strength administered fasting. The clinical relevance of these decreases is unknown. The apparent volume of distribution (V/F) of metformin following single oral doses of Metformin HCl 850 mg averaged 654 358 L. Differing Brands Of Generic Metformin Behave Differently

Dr. Bernstein has been preaching about this on his web telecasts for years, but it bears repeating: If you are having problems with generic metformin or not seeing it make much impact on your blood sugar, change brands before you assume it isn't working or that you can't tolerate it. I just had this message brought home to me when my pharmacy (Walgreens) filled my prescription for metformin ER with tablets from SunPharma instead of the ones from Teva they'd given me for years. The pills were about half the size of the ones I'd been getting, which suggested they contained less of a matrix substance to slow the release of the metformin. And sure enough, when I took the same dose I had been taking with no problems with the Teva brand metformin, I felt exhausted and semi-poisoned. It felt just like when I had taken an overdose of metformin some years ago, when my family doctor prescribed an overdose after confusing the dosage instructions for regular metformin--which can be taken in larger doses--with those of metformin ER. Not only that, but my fasting blood sugars went up. Clearly the SunPharma metformin ER was not behaving like a true extended release should and releasing slowly through a 24 hour period but was hitting my blood stream all at once and then was done. A quick visit to Google revealed that Sun Pharmaceuticals is an Indian company and that in the past the FDA has forced them to recall batches for quality issues. When it was time to refill my prescription, I called my pharmacy and spoke with the pharmacist who shrugged off my concerns and told me I'd have to speak to the pharmacy manager (not available that day.) So I got on the phone and called other local pharmacies and asked them what brand they were dispensing. Two of them still carry the Teva brand, so I Continue reading >>

Report Generic Drug Problem

Report Generic Drug Problem

It's hard to report a generic drug problem. The FDA has requires information that pharmacies rarely put on the label. That said, you MUST report a problem. In the field of pharmaceuticals, Americans have been told that price doesnt matter. Generic drugs are supposed to be identical to their brand name counterparts. For nearly 30 years, we believed this argument. We encouraged people to save money by insisting that their physicians prescribe generics whenever they were available. A lot of health professionals and FDA officials who are familiar with our work find it hard to believe that Joe was once among the countrys leading advocates for generic drugs. The Peoples Pharmacy book was first published in 1976. In it Joe had a chapter titled How to Save Money on Prescription Drugs. Here is what he wrote almost 40 years ago: The argument which your doctor will almost always resort to when defending his practice of prescribing expensive brands is that they are superior in quality to the el cheapo generic varieties. Since no one wants a prescription for lousy medicine, this approach usually shuts a patient up pretty fast. By the time the doctor is finished, you will probably apologize for mentioning the subject and end up meekly retreating with your tail between your legs. But does this argument hold water? Now just so you know which side of the fence I am on I am going to make the story crystal clear. If your doctors hands you this tired line, he is fooling you in the worst way. The inequality of drugs routine is usually just plain untrue. Although there have been some exceptions, there is very little solid evidence that demonstrates generic drugs to be inferior. But dont take my word for it: listen to what the experts have to say. Lets start with antibiotics, because they ar Continue reading >>

Pending Recalls

In July 2011, FDA began a pilot program to notify people of drug recalls before they are classified in an effort to expedite notifications of human drug product recalls to the public. FDA is now able to accomplish the goal of expedited notification within the Enforcement Report. These recalls are identified within the Enforcement Report by the label of Not Yet Classified in the Classification column. It is also possible to search the Enforcement Report for these Not Yet Classified recalls using the filter drop down menu. Therefore, as of September 15, 2017 FDA will discontinue the pilot program, and will no longer post drug recalls that are pending classification on this webpage. To see posted recalls that are pending classification go tothe weekly Enforcement Report. Comments related to this Drug Product Pilot Program, even after the program has ended can be sent to [email protected] .
