DarioHealth is a software company that built a glucose-measuring device called Dario, which works with a mobile app. The company claims "tens of thousands of people" use Dario. Users plug the glucose monitor into their iPhone using the 3.5mm audio jack to get a reading of their blood sugar level. But with Apple killing the headphone jack, DarioHealth knew something needed to be done. Erez Raphael, CEO of DarioHealth, said he heard rumors that the headphone jack was on its way out. "This rumor was already out there before the iPhone 6 was out, and when we hadn't seen it in the iPhone 6, we decided we were not going to take the chance with iPhone 7," Raphael told Business Insider in an interview. The company started working on a Dario machine that could connect to Apple's Lightning port, rather than the headphone jack, about a year ago. A new little meter is on the market, and I think it’s a pretty cool little device! It’s the new Dario Smart Meter from LabStyle Innovations. It has had CE approval since September 2013, but was just approved here in the US in December 2015, and hit the market in March of this year. It’s been about a month since I received the new Dario meter. This little meter system is not a new concept, but I feel it has solved a few problems maybe some other similar apps and devices have or have had while creating a few of its own. Features: Small, compact, all-in-one design (slightly larger than a lighter or lipgloss size). Compared to other meter kits on the market, this is the smallest one I’ve used. And since it is all-in-one, there are no separate parts to keep up with. It’s easy to handhold and doesn’t feel big or overly awkward to carry in your pocket. Compatible with iPhone and Android Dario App (iPhone only in the US currently though) The app is intuitive with basic logging features yet smart design, and syncs to the desktop application as well with a great use of colors for readings that are low, lower end of normal, normal, higher end of normal, or high rather than just three colors to differentiate low, within range, or high. Advantages: Its design allows the user to only have to carry the device as a whole: it carries the strips in a removable cartridge, the lancing device is built in, and the strip reader device is tucked into the side and snaps into place when not in use. Apple appears to be working on blood glucose monitoring as a way to address type 2 diabetes.“Stick it in your ear.” Literally. Not all Apple product rumors are equal. Speculation that the headphone jack will reappear with the iPhone 8 has been rightly ridiculed. But the evidence Apple will introduce a glucose monitoring device is worthy of our interest. “Glucose monitoring” is a code word for fighting the growing scourge of type 2 diabetes. Unlike type 1 diabetes, which is unpreventable, the type 2 variety is, to be polite, a “lifestyle” disease, meaning we eat too much and don’t exercise enough. (As usual, the French are more brutal: for them, Type 2 is diabète gras, “fat diabetes.”) A 2016 Harvard School of Public Health study places the global cost of type 2 diabetes at $825 billion per year and growing [as always, edits and emphasis mine]: … in the last 35 years, global diabetes among men has more than doubled—from 4.3% in 1980 to 9% in 2014—after adjusting for the effect of aging.
