Leaves And Fruits For Diabetes

Leaves And Fruits For Diabetes

Did you know regular plants — leaves and fruits — can help treat (not cure) diabetes? Studies show these plants lower blood sugar reliably in people and rodents with few side effects. Here are some to try: Guava Tea made from the leaves of the guava plant is one of the Foods for Specified Health Uses approved by Japan. The approval process requires studies on animals and humans, chemical analysis, and proof that the product is what it says it is. I wish the U.S. had a list like that. An article in the journal Nutrition & Metabolism found that compounds in guava leaf tea inhibit absorption of certain types of sugar, so that levels don’t spike after meals. In one study, people drank guava tea after eating white rice. They had far less of a glucose rise than people who drank hot water. Guava leaf seems to lower fasting sugars as well. In a study of people with Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, those who drank guava leaf tea with every meal for 12 weeks had lower fasting blood sugar levels than before they started drinking the tea. Guava (scientific name Psidium guajava) has been used in East Asia for diabetes possibly for centuries. Several studies from Japan found that guava leaf tea also reduces cholesterol and insulin levels in mice and rats. You can make tea out of the leaves, or buy guava tea online. Insulin plant Costaceae is a family of plants called by people in the Indian subcontinent “insulin plant,” because the tea appears to reliably reduces blood sugar. There are roughly 200 species of insulin plant. The plant was brought from South America to India in the last two hundred years for ornamental use. People discovered the health benefits somehow, and it is now used in Ayurvedic medicine. Studies in rats and humans have found that Costaceae lowers blood l Continue reading >>

A Review On Insulin Plant (costus Igneus Nak)

A Review On Insulin Plant (costus Igneus Nak)

Go to: INTRODUCTION Costus igneus Nak (syn. Costus pictus D. Don, Costus mexicanus Liebm ex Petersen or Costus congenitus Rowle), commonly known as fiery costus, Step ladder or Spiral flag or Insulin plant, is native to South and Central America. This is a recent introduction to India from America as an herbal cure for diabetes and hence commonly called as ‘insulin plant.’[1] It is widely grown in gardens as ornamental plant in South India and also run wild in many places.[2] It is used in India to control diabetes, and it is known that diabetic people eat one leaf daily to keep their blood glucose low.[3] Leaves of C. igneus were one among the plants known to be effectively used for treating diabetes by the tribal people of Kolli hills of Namakkal district, Tamilnadu.[4] In Mexican folk medicine, the aerial part of C. pictus D. Don is used as an infusion in the treatment of renal disorders.[5] The plant belongs to the family Costaceae. The Costaceae was first raised to the rank of family by Nakai on the basis of spirally arranged leaves and rhizomes being free from aromatic essential oils. Before the elevation to family status, Engler and Prantl recognized Costoideal as a subfamily under Zingiberaceae. Several anatomical and morphological features support this isolated position including well developed aerial shoot with distinct, rigid, and commonly branched stems. The leaves are inserted in a low spiral with divergences. The family Costaceae consists of four genera and approximately 200 species. The genus Costus is the largest in the family with about 150 species that are mainly tropical in distribution.[2,6] The present review deals with the recent research carried out in the area of phytochemistry, pharmacological, biological activities, and safety of Costus ign Continue reading >>

Update 2-mannkind To Buy Pfizer's Insulin Plant In Germany

UPDATE 2-MannKind to buy Pfizer's insulin plant in Germany * To retain about 80 of plants 148 employees * Deal to help MannKind in marketing of Afresa * MannKind shares rise as much as 14 pct (Recasts; adds analyst comments, details; updates share movement) BANGALORE, March 9 (Reuters) - MannKind Corp ( MNKD.O ) said it agreed to buy Pfizer Incs ( PFE.N ) insulin plant in Germany and a manufacturing license for $33 million, giving it the right to make its own insulin and a bargaining chip when it starts partnership talks for its inhaled-insulin product. The actual facility is not the most important thing. The key point here is that the company now has two things - an inventory of insulin and a license to manufacture insulin for pulmonary delivery, said Jason Butler, an analyst with Rodman & Renshaw LLC. MannKind has now secured a supply of insulin for the marketing of its ultra-rapid-acting inhaled-insulin product, Afresa which met its main late-stage goal in December and that will likely lower the cost of producing the finished product, Butler said. The assured supply of insulin would also be a point of strength as partnership negotiations for Afresa progress later this year, Butler said. Besides the facility at Industriepark Hoechst, Frankfurt, MannKind would also buy assets related to bulk insulin production, relevant real property rights and production equipment, the company said in a statement. The deal requires that MannKind get approval from the operator of the facility as well as Sanofi-Aventis ( SASY.PA ), which holds the right of first refusal on the sale of the real property rights. Even if it does not get the required approvals, the company still walks away with bulk insulin, the license to manufacture bulk insulin and certain removable equipment. Butler sa Continue reading >>

The leaves of the plant have the ability to help control and normalize blood sugar levels. Research has shown that the plant extract also contains the same properties and can be consumed in a powdered form as well. Insulin Plant: Natures Own Diabetes Medicine?

Home Magazine Diabetes Insulin Plant: Natures Own Diabetes Medicine? Insulin Plant: Natures Own Diabetes Medicine? Expert-reviewed byAshwini S.Kanade, Registered Dietician and Certified Diabetes Educator with 17 years of experience. Fact-checked byAditya Nar, B.Pharm, MSc. Public Health and Health Economics. The successful discovery, manufacturing and marketing of new medicines is a time-consuming process that can take anywhere from 10 to 15 years. No wonder then, in recent times, a lot of research focuses on studying local natural medicines that have already been in use by the natives of a particular place. In the year 2012, two researchers in Tamil Nadu carried out a study of the plants traditionally used by tribals in the Kolli hills (located in Tamil Nadus Namakkal district) to treat diabetes. An interesting find was the use of leaves of Keukand (in Hindi) or Kostam (in Tamil). (1) This plant is native to Central and South America and only came to India much later. But once it did, it grew increasingly popular as the Insulin plant, supposedly due to word-of-mouth publicity as an effective natural diabetes medicine. Lots of research has been conducted to check the diabetes-controlling effect of this insulin plant: 17 different studies have been carried out on animals and animal tissue. These studies have shown that extracts from the leaves of the insulin plant successfully reduced blood glucose levels. (2) As for regular insulin therapy, heres everything you need to know about it. Now, this is where the research is yet to catch up. Only one study has been conducted on persons with diabetes so far, at the Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India. The study found that chewing on one fresh leaf of the insulin plant or consuming 1 teaspoon of the dried leaf powder dai Continue reading >>

Sanofi Swoops On Pfizer's Insulin Plant

Sanofi Swoops On Pfizer's Insulin Plant

Sanofi-Aventis will pay 30 million euros (26 million) for a manufacturing plant in Germany operated by Pfizer in a deal that marks the end of the latter's ambitions in inhaled insulin therapy. The Diabel facility - said to be one of largest insulin production facilities in the world - was originally built by Sanofi-Aventis and Pfizer as part of their joint venture for the production of now-defunct inhaled insulin therapy Exubera. Pfizer took overall control of the facility after buying Sanofi-Aventis' share in the product in 2006 for $1.3 billion, but Exubera never lived up to its early promise as an alternative to injections for diabetes patients. Diabetics proved reluctant to switch to the inhaled product because of dissatisfaction with the bulky Exubera inhaler, lingering concerns about safety as well as reluctance by insurers to reimburse the product. Pfizer decided to pull Exubera off the market at the end of 2007 on the back of lacklustre sales, leaving it with manufacturing capacity for insulin standing idle. The company closed down its US plant for insulin in Terre Haute, Indiana, in October 2007, and forged an agreement to sell the Diabel facility to US company Mannkind in March of this year. However, Sanofi-Aventis had retained a step-in clause in its buy-out contract in case it wanted to re-assume control of the Frankfurt facility. Its decision to exercise that clause has put paid to Mannkind's ambition to secure the unit. In a statement, Sanofi-Aventis' general manager in Germany Martin Siewert said that the plant would add to its own production units in Frankfurt and create "the largest insulin capacity in the world". He said strong demand for Sanofi-Aventis' insulin products, and particularly the long-acting insulin analogue Lantus (insulin glargine), mad Continue reading >>
