Hawaii Olympic weightlifter shows that diabetes has no 'type' - Hawaii News Now - KGMB and KHNL Hawaii Olympic weightlifter shows that diabetes has no 'type' At the Nuuanu YMCA on a recent weekday, Olympic weightlifter Jameson Dahl is hard at work, going through his workout to stay in shape. The 32-year-old looks like the picture of health. So you might be surprised to hear he has Type 1 diabetes. In high school, the San Diego native was an active athlete. "I swam, did water polo, and hockey," Dahl said. But at 24, he started noticing big changes with his body. "I started getting really weak. At one point I dropped, in two weeks, maybe from 185 to 140 pounds," he said. Doctors diagnosed Dahl with Type 1 diabetes, something that shocked him at the time. "I was terrified. My first reaction was, 'What?'" Over half a million people in the islands have diabetes or are pre-diabetic.That's 1 in 3 people. The vast majority of those diagnosed have Type 2 diabetes, which is linked to obesity and lifestyle choices. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. In both cases, the disease affects the body's production of insulin-- a hormone the body needs to get energy from food. There is no cure for Type 1 diabetes, but Kourtney Inoue said, a certified diabetes educator at Kaiser Permanente's Moanalua Clinic, said Type 2 diabetes can be managed with diet and exercise. "It is a serious problem. We are seeing an increase in the number of diagnosis," Inoue said. "We could fill up Aloha Stadium several times with the people who have diabetes or pre-diabetes." Meanwhile, diabetes is the seventhleading cause of death in Hawaii -- and nationwide. As for Dahl, he's not letting diabetes slow him down. He leads an active lifestyle and continues to compete locally and nationally. And his approac Continue reading >>

I attended a diabetes class (as moral support with a family member) from Kevin Kam. I found the class to be informative and easy to understand. This all due to Kevin as he is knowledgeable and informal. The place is clean and there is plenty parking. I would highly recommend taking a class here from Kevin if you want to learn about diabetes. Very informative...4 stars only because i would have liked to have more time. Too much time spwnt on medication which i feel is almost out of your personal control. I wished we spent more time on nuitrition and exercise, more lifestyle changes since it has the most effect at prevention and the easiest to access do to it being your personal lifestyle. But the information on how diabetes actually works and affects your body is eye opening, and a good warning mechanism. Kevin is very very friendly and knowledgeable and doesn't ignore or skip over anyone (the reason why we sort of ran out of time) i liked that but we had some less desirable questuons and comment coming from other class participants. Totally out of control of Kevin but can be rememdied with a little more time. This class presented by Dr. Kam was extremely helpful and informative for understanding diabetes and the options for treatment. A must whether you are newly diagnosed or have had diabetes for a while. Thank you so much Dr. Kam and staff. I recently had the pleasure of attending an omnipod training class with Kevin a few months ago & recently for a follow-up.He is super friendly and easy-going when going over information and doesn't make you feel stupid when you aren't sure of things. I also had many defective pods I didn't think to return and he was nice enough to give me extras and some other goodies that could aid with the pod.The center is easy to find: it's on Continue reading >>

Dr. Elizabeth Chen Christenson is a Board Certified physician who specializes in integrative medicine as well as the diagnoses and treatment of diabetes. The doctor and staff of CHI Medical Center serve residents of many Hawaiian communities, including those in the Kailua area. Also known as hyperglycemia, Diabetes Mellitus Type II is a degenerative condition of high blood sugar caused from an inability of the pancreas to produce adequate insulin and also involves insulin resistance factors. Left unchecked, it can cause neuropathy, retinitis, renal failure, cardiovascular anomalies and eventual diabetic coma. With the average adult American expected to consume between 150-170 pounds of sugar annually, diabetes is a disease that masquerades as a sweet treat but can be a lifelong bittersweet battle with obesity, heart disease, nerve destruction and blindness. Considering the high risks, why is it so difficult to get under control? At CHI Medical Center in the heart of Kailua, HI, the first step to gaining control of Type II Diabetes is to eliminate the overwhelming amount of dietary sugar from processed foods. Using sugar, salt and other chemical substitutes, the food industry and fast food conglomerates have brainwashed the taste buds of Americans to go for the sweet and the salty. Just eliminating the obvious food sources of high sugar and salt content is a good step to gaining dominion over the threat of diabetes and its serious side effects. Although the biochemical chain of events leading to official Type II Diabetes is complicated, the simple truth is that genetically induced insulin depletion is a rare inherited condition and known as Type I Diabetes, formerly, Juvenile Diabetes. A childhood of soft drinks, ice cream, candy bars and sugary cereals graduates to mor Continue reading >>
