Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that controls blood-sugar levels. T1D develops when the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells are mistakenly destroyed by the body’s immune system. The cause of this attack is still being researched, however scientists believe the cause may have genetic and environmental components. There is nothing anyone can do to prevent T1D. Presently, there is no known cure. Who T1D affects Type 1 diabetes (sometimes known as juvenile diabetes) affects children and adults, though people can be diagnosed at any age. With a typically quick onset, T1D must be managed with the use of insulin—either via injection or insulin pump. Soon, people who are insulin dependent may also be able to use artificial pancreas systems to automatically administer their insulin. How T1D is managed Type 1 diabetes is a 24/7 disease that requires constant management. People with T1D continuously and carefully balance insulin intake with eating, exercise and other activities. They also measure blood-sugar levels through finger pricks, ideally at least six times a day, or by wearing a continuous glucose monitor. Even with a strict regimen, people with T1D may still experience dangerously high or low blood-glucose levels that can, in extreme cases, be life threatening. This week I will explain the difference between Pet Diabetes type 1 and type 2 so that our diabetic feline families understand why strict adherence is so very important early on after your cat’s diagnosis. Type 1 diabetes means a lack of insulin production, or deficiency in insulin production by the pancreas. Dogs are almost always type 1 diabetics. They may have some factors such as obesity or infection that can add to insulin resistance, but once we make the diagnosis of diabetes in dogs, you can pretty much anticipate that the dog will be on insulin for the rest of its life. Type 1 diabetes is also known as “insulin-dependent diabetes”. Pancreatitis is a common cause of type 1 diabetes in both dogs and cats. You will remember that the pancreas is the little gland that lives near the stomach and small intestine. It produces digestive enzymes to help us utilize the foods we eat, and it also makes the hormone, insulin. If the pancreas becomes inflamed or damaged, insulin production may be partially or completely affected. If we have a diabetic dog, we of course want to improve any conditions that may add to insulin resistance in order to achieve good diabetic regulation, but it would be highly unlikely for a dog to go off insulin. Type 2 diabetes is a situation where other factors (such as obesity and high carbohydrate diets in cats) cause an elevation in blood glucose by insulin resistance. A type 2 diabetic may have normal insulin secretion by the pancreas or may even be secreting a higher amount of insulin by the pancreas to try to bring the blood glucose levels back to normal. Type 1 Vs. Type 2 Diabetes: Which One Is Worse?
What are the differences between the causes of type 1 and type 2? The underlying causes of type 1 and type 2 are different. Type 1 diabetes causes Type 1 diabetes is believed to be due to an autoimmune process, in which the body's immune system mistakenly targets its own tissues (islet cells in the pancreas). In people with type 1 diabetes, the beta cells of the pancreas that are responsible for insulin production are attacked by the misdirected immune system. This tendency for the immune system to destroy the beta cells of the pancreas is likely to be, at least in part, genetically inherited, although the exact reasons that this process happens are not fully understood. Exposure to certain viral infections (mumps and Coxsackie viruses) or other environmental toxins have been suggested as possible reasons why the abnormal antibody responses develop that cause damage to the pancreas cells. The primary problem in type 2 diabetes is the inability of the body's cells to use insulin properly and efficiently, leading to hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and diabetes. This problem affects mostly the cells of muscle and fat tissues, and results in a condition known as insulin resistance. In type 2 diabetes, there also is a steady decline of beta cells that worsens the process of elevated blood sugars. At the beginning, if someone is resistant to insulin, the body can at least partially increase production of insulin enough to overcome the level of resistance. Description Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that causes serious health complications including renal (kidney) failure, heart disease, stroke, and blindness. Approximately 17 million Americans have diabetes. Unfortunately, as many as one-half are unaware they have it. Every cell in the human body needs energy in order to function. The body's primary energy source is glucose, a simple sugar resulting from the digestion of foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches). Glucose from the digested food circulates in the blood as a ready energy source for any cells that need it. Insulin is a hormone or chemical produced by cells in the pancreas, an organ located behind the stomach. Insulin bonds to a receptor site on the outside of cell and acts like a key to open a doorway into the cell through which glucose can enter. Some of the glucose can be converted to concentrated energy sources like glycogen or fatty acids and saved for later use. And 86 million people in the United States with prediabetes are headed towards developing Type 2 diabetes. When people are diagnosed with diabetes, they often have many questions, especially about the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
