Who Nod To 'new' Test To Diagnose Diabetes

WHO nod to 'new' test to diagnose diabetes WHO nod to 'new' test to diagnose diabetes HbA1c -- a common test in urban Indian pathological labs to detect diabetes -- has finally been endorsed by the World Health Organisation. NEW DELHI: HbA1c -- a common test in urban Indian pathological labs to detect diabetes -- has finally been endorsed by the World Health Organisation . A report by WHO's expert consultation issued on Monday on the diagnosis of diabetes recommends the acceptability of glycated haemoglobin or HbA1c as an additional test to diagnose this debilitating disease that affects 220 million people worldwide. Dr Ala Alwan, assistant director-general of WHO's non-communicable diseases and mental health, said, "Testing HbA1c is a practical way of diagnosing diabetes. Unlike other means of diagnosis, it does not require a patient to fast before a blood sample is taken nor to consume a glucose drink that many people find unpalatable." Reacting to the move, Dr Navin Dang, director of Dr Dang's Laboratories , told TOI, "HbA1c is now being globally accepted as a very reliable test to diagnose diabetes. Moreover, HbA1c also has the advantage of reflecting the person's average blood glucose levels over the preceding 2-3 months. We are doing this test routinely in our lab." However, Dr Anoop Mishra, chairman of Fortis' centre of excellence for diabetes, said the biggest problem with HbA1c is its cost. For him, the blood sugar test taken after 10 hours of fasting and blood test taken two hours after consuming 75 mg of glucose are still the best. "If the present day blood glucose tests cost Rs 100, HbA1c, which was cleared by the American Diabetes Association last year, costs around Rs 500 and is therefore not affordable by most Indians. We also don't have standardized lab Continue reading >>

Glycosylated Hemoglobin

Glycosylated Hemoglobin

Glycosylated Hemoglobin, also called Glycated Hemoglobin, Hemoglobin A1c, or HbA1c, refers to hemoglobin which is bound to glucose. Glycosylated Hemoglobin Test measures the percentage of glycosylated hemoglobin in blood which reflects the average blood glucose over a period of past two to three months (8 - 12 weeks). The Glycosylated Hemoglobin test is performed to: Monitor Diabetes treatment efficacy by measuring glycosylated hemoglobin regularly Screen for Diabetes as part of regular health checkup, as well as in patients with high risk of developing diabetes Diagnose and confirm diabetes with a combination of other tests if blood sugar levels have been high over a long period of time Glycosylated Hemoglobin Test measures the percentage of glycosylated hemoglobin in blood which reflects the average blood glucose over a period of past two to three months (8 - 12 weeks). Hemoglobin is the protein found in Red Blood Cells and is responsible for transporting oxygen. Of the different types of hemoglobin, Hemoglobin A is predominant. With the elevation of blood sugar levels, some glucose binds spontaneously to Hemoglobin A (this binding is called Glycosylation or Glycation) and remains bound for the complete lifetime of the RBC, which is 120 days normally. Higher the level of glucose in the blood, greater is the amount of it binding to Hemoglobin A. Hemoglobin A1c is the dominant form of Glycated Hemoglobin. As RBCs die and are replaced, Hemoglobin A1c is cleared and slowly replaced with non-glycosylated hemoglobin. Measurement of HbA1c level over a period of time gives an indication of the level of glucose in the blood over the specified period of time. This helps in the diagnosis of Diabetes and is useful for monitoring the effectiveness of measures taken to reduce bloo Continue reading >>

Hod Laboratory - Blood Testing Service |

At HOD, we focus our highest attention to the importance of precision in laboratory operations. Thereby HOD has chosen the best of quality equipment to meet your requirements. In June 2015, we have introduced a fully automated bi-directionally integrated centralized laboratory at Karkardooma, Delhi. Our team of Pathologists and technical staff verify the results of every sample, and continually monitor and implement quality checks to ensure the highest precision for your testing. Dry Chemistry based technologies: Unlike most other leading laboratories in Delhi, HOD uses dry chemistry in most of its testing. Dry Chemistry is the most advanced technology from USA on fully automated biochemistry platform giving quick, reliable, accurate and consistent patient result. Clinicians rely on it to treat for better patient outcome. It does not require external interventions like usage of water, washing, etc that eliminates the sources of error. Its single disposable slide for every test with unique multi layered Dry Slide Technology produce better precision & accuracy. However, Dry chemistry is much costlier than wet chemistry. But at HOD, we absorb most of these costs, and strive to earn our small share of profits through volumes. NABL Accredited: The central laboratory in Karkardooma, holds a NABL Accredition, and follows stringent quality management norms for most high volume parameters such as those included in LFT, KFT, CBC, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, HbA1c, Thyroid Profile, Lipid Profile, Blood Sugar and other tests. Barcoded: Barcoding ensures that there are no manual errors in patient and sample identification. Bi-Directional Integration: Bi-Directional integration ensures that you dont end up getting a wrong manually entered report. In this method, the blood testing equipm Continue reading >>

Hba1c (1) Test - Test Results, Normal Range, Cost And More

also known as: GlycohemoglobinHGBA1c , HGB A1c , HbA1c HbA1c (1) is a glycated hemoglobin that lives in blood. The duty of this protein is to carry oxygen into the human body. The protein level has to live under 42 mmol/mol in blood cells. It is the normal level. If it increases, then people are addicted to diabetes. Therefore, doctors see the symptoms of the human body and prescribe the HbA1c (1) test to determine the actual level of diabetes. If the level is roaming between 42 to 47 mmol/mol, then the condition marked as pre-diabetes and over 47 mmol/mol leads to acute diabetes. The HbA1c (1) is a blood test that shows the sugar level. Blood test for determining the presence of diabetes mellitus needs some normal discipline. Most of the people of modern era should check the level of the glycated hemoglobin in blood once per year. People of UK do the test often. Fasting creates confusion for this test. Nurses and physician want the patients to fast for 10 hours before the blood test. HbA1c (1), the glycated hemoglobin needs the normal quantity. If the patient is marking the unnatural symptoms like blur vision, more hunger, and thirst, repeated urination. The human body can be fatigue excessively. The symptoms vary head to head as well. There are two types of diabetes, type 1 would show such symptoms and type 2 grows inwardly, unnoticed. The HbA1c (1) test is prescribed to check the glucose level in the blood. The doctors use random and fasting blood sugar test to see the current scenarios. Thus, the sugar treatment would run on the proper track. Patients would see their prescription first. If the physician and the doctor want the fasting condition, then the patient should fix an early morning appointment. This time would be the best to bother the blank stomach.
