We take a look at the psychological reasons behind sugar cravings, in an effort to help you master them... Why do we crave sugar? It is perfectly natural to enjoy sweet food. We have evolved from times when food was scarce, and high calorie food was rewarding both to our taste buds, and for our survival. Some people feel ‘addicted’ to sugar, and report that freedom only comes when they completely abstain from it. Sweet food certainly acts on the reward systems in our brains, and, for most of us, sweet food has a positive impact on mood, at least in the short-term. Since being diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 29 weeks pregnant I have learnt so much! All of us can learn how to better manage our blood sugar levels giving us more energy, curbing cravings and reducing overeating. Here are some of the key things I’ve discovered, which I hope you will benefit from as well; Nutrition 1. Total carbohydrate is more important than sugar on a diabetic diet. Initially when I made changes I just thought I needed to cut out any sweet treats; no cake, chocolate, milo, ice cream or dessert. I didn't worry so much about the healthy complex carbohydrates I was having. What I learnt was that it is the total carbohydrate in something that is going to have the impact. While having brown rice, wholemeal pasta, grainy bread or quinoa are all good things in terms of their nourishment, fibre and the satiety factor that they bring. Having too much in one serving still means it is converted to glucose in the blood and will still spike your blood sugar levels as the body is so inefficient in processing it all. I have become much more aware of the "total carbohydrate per serving" part of the label which to be honest I never paid any attention to before. I now look at the total carbohydrates per serving and check how much a serving size really is and then mentally work out how much I can have at any given meal. The dieticians taught us to think in what they call 'exchanges' similar to servings. One piece of bread roughly equals one exchange. They recommend having; • 2 - 4 at breakfast, lunch and dinner and • 1 - 2 in snacks mid morning, mid afternoon and possibly evening. That's a total of 9-18 exchanges (piece of bread equivalents) per day. I was wondering if too much chocolate can cause GD? Hi, I don't think it can directly cause GD but if it's causing you to gain excess weight then it may put you in a higher risk category.I have a friend who becomes crazy addicted to choc while preg (she consumes much more than you describe).She's never gained much weight while preg and GD was never a concern. I'm already on the heavy side so for health reasons I try to avoid chocolate (luckily for me I don't crave it at all while preg - much more a savoury kind of girl). First pregnancy I HAD to have a mars bar EVERYDAY... I justified this by walking to the deli to buy it! Never got GD and we have a history of it in my family... I even had my own special way of eating them however 6years on I still can't eat mars bars! This pregnancy again craving chocolate but not so bad... infact first trimester I didn't have any all I wanted was pineapple! how ever the last 6 or 7 weeks I've wanted white chocolate I'll eat a family block or two every week! I did my glucose test a few weeks ago and still all good... I only put on 12kgs with my daughter and so far have put on 11kgs with 4 weeks to go this time but I'm pretty good with everything else I eat! ETA I'm quite a small person 55kgs before getting pregnant I don't go to the gym etc but I do walk heaps especially when I'm pregnant so that may have something to do with it too. It is reported that 50-90% of all pregnant women experience some kind of intense desire to consume specific foods at some point during their pregnancies. However, sweet food cravings should be carefully handled for the sake of good health of both mother and the baby. Women who never had diabetes can experience high blood glucose levels, due to Glucose intolerance (an inability to metabolize glucose properly by the body) during pregnancy. This condition is known as Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) and it is said to affect about 18% of pregnancies. Professor Beverly and colleagues at the Department of Food Science in the School of Environmental & Biological Sciences of Rutgers University, has conducted a comprehensive study to investigate sweet cravings in pregnant women with GDM. A group of pregnant women were enrolled into the study at 16-20 weeks of their pregnancy and monitored during three sessions over the course of their pregnancy and once 6-10 weeks after delivery. Non-pregnant controls were also tested at similar intervals. All pregnant women were routinely screened for GDM at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy. Women who were diagnosed with GDM were referred to nutritional counseling and received diet therapy until the end of their pregnancies. At the same time, the food cravings of these women were noted by questionnaires. Join the community Hi everyone, i am a female and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in jan 2007, since then my hba1c have always risen and is now 8.2 i also take cholesterol tablets (total 5.7, LDL 4.9) my new years resolution is to get my diabetes under control as i'm know a bit frightened of what i have done to my insides,from eating to much chocolate. i blood sugar control can vary from 6-16 but i do inject 6-7 times a day if eating chocolate or biscuits etc. i only weigh 9 stone 8 lbs, i did start running 3 miles on the running machine but this has faded out. i am going to start this again. Can anyone give me some advise on what kind of food i should be eating, but i really dont like fish or spices. i have just ordered the visual guide of carbs and cals. A couple of ideas which may help satisfy your sweet tooth without having to increase insulin injections and hopefully Smaslan help bring your Hba1c down, obviously a lower carb diet will help both of you. When I was pregnant with my second baby, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at about 28 weeks. I was not happy when this day came because it was the start of three months of watching your health very closely. Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar that develops during pregnancy in a person who did not have diabetes before pregnancy. The pancreas does not produce enough insulin to combat the glucose in your body. You can ask your doctor about the science behind it, I just want to share what I had to go through and let you know what to look out for. For the next three months, everyday, I had to test myself on what my blood sugar levels were 7 times a day: before and after each meal and before bedtime snack. Yes, I had to prick my finger and draw blood 7 times a day. On top of that, I had to get checked every two weeks from the gestional diabetes clinic. Due to the fat in chocolate it means the glucose from it releases slower than some other sweets and sugary treats and it is for this reason that chocolate is no longer recommended to be used to raise blood sugar levels when insulin dependant diabetics are having hypos. If you are a chocoholic who feels they will not be able to control the amounts eaten, then you may want to make the choice to abstain completely, or only buy chocolate in treat size amounts to prevent overindulging.
