Diabetes Education and Prevention Classes Through the support of Austin Public Health, free nutrition education classes and diabetes prevention and self-management classes are offered throughout Travis County for residents. Did you know? About 8.3% of the people in the US are estimated to be living with diabetes. That is almost 26 million people nationwide, or around 88,000 people in Travis County, Texas. Shockingly, there are three times as many people estimated to be prediabetic. If you are overweight or prediabetic, you can reduce your chances of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 58% by getting regular moderate physical activity, eating healthier by reducing fat and portion sizes and increasing vegetables, and reducing weight by 5-7 percent. Free Diabetes Self-Management & Education Classes Our instructors can bring the Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP)curriculum on-site to participants. The St. Elizabeth Physicians Regional Diabetes Center is home to an American Diabetes Association-certified diabetes education program. Here, you can attend classes and support group meetings where you'll learn about diabetes and how to successfully self-manage the condition. Research shows proper diabetes education improves quality of life and prevents long-term complications. A group of nurses and dietitians who are certified diabetes educators leads the diabetes education program. Free Diabetes Education and Support Group Meetings These classes and support group meetings are free and open to the public. This friendly and confidential support group is for people with diabetes who feel overwhelmed and would like to meet with others who understand. The Citrus Valley Health Partners Center for Diabetes Education offers comprehensive diabetes educationwe cover the basics and go Beyond the Basics to help you understand how to self-manage your diabetes. We are an American Diabetes Association recognized education program and an affiliate of the California Diabetes and Pregnancy Program (Sweet Success). Group classes and individualized one-to-one education cover nutrition, exercise, stress management, medications, monitoring your diabetes, preventative methods to maximize your health potential and much more! For moms-to-be and their babies, our Sweet Success program provides education prior to conception, throughout the pregnancy and postpartum follow-up. Our multidisciplinary team of nurses, dietitians, and marriage family therapists work with patients, their families and the community to help persons successfully manage this chronic disease. Anyone can enter our program with a physicians order. Patients from our Citrus Valley Medical Center and Foothill Presbyterian Hospital inpatient units may be referred to our Diabetes Education Program. Other people in the community living with diabetes also can take advantage of our Diabetes Education Program. National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) The National Diabetes Prevention Program isa year long program for small groups of people who are at risk for developing diabetes. Classes are led by a trained lifestyle coach. People with take the classes learn real changes such as healthier eating, adding physical activity into their daily lives, and improving problem-solving skills. Classes meet weekly for the first 16 weeks, then less often for the rest of the year. This program can help people lower their risk of getting type 2 diabetes by 58%. Some local YMCAs also offer a Diabetes Prevention Program. Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) A 10-hour program for people with type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes. Family members are also welcome. This class helps participants take care of their diabetes day-to-day. Classes are led by licensed or certified health professionals. Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP or Living Well with Diabetes) A 6 week program for people with type 2 diabetes. Caregivers who assist them are also welcome.
