Diabetes Meal-delivery Services

Imagine cooking a meal that not only tastes good, but also is easy to make. The food is already in your refrigerator, the ingredients are premeasured, simple directions are provided, and your nutritional needs are met without too many excess calories. Welcome to the world of meal-delivery plans and meal-kit services — a popular new trend in eating and cooking that is sweeping the country and helping time-starved people get back in the kitchen. These services appeal to those who want to cook but don’t have the time to plan meals, buy ingredients, and cook dinner. It removes the anxiety many people experience trying to figure out “what’s for dinner.” How do these plans work? You start by going online and choosing from a menu of meals, from basic to gourmet. Some services deliver frozen, precooked meals that need only reheating. But the majority of services deliver meal kits with all the fresh ingredients needed to prepare a homemade meal. With rapid-delivery methods championed by Amazon, meals are shipped to your door in mini coolers containing your chosen entrees, along with premeasured and sometimes prechopped ingredients, including everything from creams and sauces to spices and garnishes. There are a wide variety of meal options — meat, pasta, fish, vegetarian — to suit anyone’s tastes and preferences. More importantly, the nutritional ingredients often are spelled out with each meal. For people living with diabetes, it’s easy to choose ones with the right level of protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, and fiber. “These meal-delivery plans are a fantastic idea to get people back in the kitchen and get to know ingredients again,” said dietitian and diabetes educator Sarah Haveman with the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. “If you’re b Continue reading >>

DIABETES DIET: CREATE YOUR HEALTHY-EATING PLAN Your diabetes diet is simply a healthy-eating plan that will help you control your blood sugar. Here's help getting started, from meal planning to exchange lists and counting carbohydrates. A diabetes diet simply means eating the healthiest foods in moderate amounts and sticking to regular mealtimes. A diabetes diet is a healthy-eating plan that's naturally rich in nutrients and low in fat and calories. Key elements are fruits, vegetables and whole grains. In fact, a diabetes diet is the best eating plan for most everyone. If you have diabetes or prediabetes, your doctor will likely recommend that you see a dietitian to help you develop a healthy eating plan. The plan helps you control your blood sugar (glucose), manage your weight and control risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure and high blood fats. When you eat excess calories and fat, your body responds by creating an undesirable rise in blood glucose. If blood glucose isn't kept in check, it can lead to serious problems, such as a dangerously high blood glucose level (hyperglycemia) and long-term complications, such as nerve, kidney and heart damage. You can help keep your blood glucose level in a safe range by making healthy food choices and tracking your eating habits. For most people with type 2 diabetes, weight loss also can make it easier to control blood glucose and offers a host of other health benefits. If you need to lose weight, a diabetes diet provides a well-organized, nutritious way to reach your goal safely. A diabetes diet is based on eating three meals a day at regular times. This helps your body better use the insulin it produces or gets through a medication. A registered dietitian can help you put together a diet based on your h Continue reading >>

Diabetic Meal Delivery For Seniors And The Elderly

Diabetic Meal Delivery For Seniors And The Elderly

Diabetic Meal Delivery for Seniors and the Elderly If you, or the senior you are buying for has diabetes, prepared diabetic meals provide a tremendous solution to help the one you love maintain healthy blood sugars. It's a great idea to maintain an inventory of diabetic prepared meals for people of any age. Say you do not have diabetes. You pre-meal blood sugar is about 100. You and a person with diabetes decide to have some pizza for dinner, and you both eat two slices. Your blood sugar will probably go up to 130 because it converts carbs to sugar, and uses the circulatory system to get this energy to different parts of your body.Your body will automatically produce insulin, which will lower the sugar in your blood. After a couple of hours, your blood sugar will go back to 100. Your diabetic dining partner will have a different experience. Chances are, their blood sugar is already higher before the meal, let's say 140, but can be much higher if your dining partner doesn't monitor and maintain their diabetes. Once they eat the same amount of pizza, their blood sugar can go up to 300 or more. A diabetic's body either doesn't produce enough insulin, their body doesn't absorb the insulin they produce, or both. This is why their blood sugar jumps so high. Worse than that, if the diabetes goes unmanaged, it can stay high. It takes a very long time for a diabetic's blood sugar to come down naturally. And more often than not, snacks or the next meal prevents it from returning to where it should be. High blood sugar, as the name implies, means there is a large amount of sugar in the blood. Your blood is thin, and has no difficulty circulating throughout your body. A diabetic can have blood that is thick like syrup. Most people think sugar is the culprit, but it is carbs, (suga Continue reading >>

Which Meal Delivery Service Is Best For You?

Which Meal Delivery Service Is Best For You?

Working in the diabetes space for as long as I have, Ive learned that the number one question people ask when diagnosed is, What can I eat ? What a difficult, convoluted, loaded, and (at times) even political question to ask. My answer? I dont know. Diabetes affects everyone differently, and you just have to find out what works for you. And thats a frustrating answer to give. Diabetes is an enigma. We dont know what causes it, we dont know what cures it, and often, and we hardly even know what manages it. People are often devastated, angry, and confused at diagnosis, and they just want some concrete answer to cling to in the sea of unknowns. Low carb, high fat ? Low fat, high carb? Plant-based? 100% vegan ? Vegetarian? Pescatarian ? Flexitarian (is that still a thing?)? Vegan till 6? Paleo ? Gluten-free ? Dairy-free? Both? Neither? Its enough to make your head spin. I get it. Ive gone through all of the various forms of vegetarianism and veganism; Ive flirted with fruitarianism; Ive sworn by low-carb. And you know what? Whats best for me isnt best for everyone (or anyone?!) else. Ive had diabetes for 18 years, and sometimes a cup of yogurt makes me spike up to 300 mg/dL, and other times I stay at a flat 110. We all know blood sugars depend on much, much more than just food and exercise (how about stress , weather, hormones , yesterdays exercise, yesterdays insulin, yesterdays food, caffeine , adrenaline, the list goes on and on). But people want answers. They want choices. And they definitely want a way to count carbs better. Ive found that the best way to tailor meals specifically to my dietary needs has been through the ever popular rise of recipe and meal-delivery services. Ive done the hard work for you, and have listed some of the most popular recipe planning and Continue reading >>

WASHINGTON — The newest entry to the fresh meal delivery business caters to customers with Type 2 diabetes, and it is the result of a project by MedStar Health Inc. The service, called WellRooted, was born out of a MedStar Health fellowship program that involved four young professionals who were challenged to come up with solutions for improving the lives of people living with Type 2 diabetes. As part of their Health for America fellowship, the four simulated living with diabetes, including eating appropriate meals. “We recognized an opportunity to bridge an educational gap between clinics and kitchens, while giving people easier access to diabetes-friendly, cost-conscious meals they’ll want to enjoy with others,” said Amanda Newman, one of the four fellows. The WellRooted service is run through meal delivery company Power Supply, with hubs in the Washington, D.C. region and California. It offers two diabetes-friendly options through its website, wellrootedfoods.com. One is a cook-at home plan that includes recipes and ingredient delivery through Instacart. The other provides ready-to-eat meals delivered by Power Supply. The meals contain no more than 600 calories, no more than 60 grams of carbohydrates and less than 750 milligrams of sodium. The cook at home deliveries include step-by-step recipe cards with pictures. The cook-at-home meals cost $6 to $10 per person. The ready-to-eat prepared meals start at $13. 9 Diabetic Friendly Meal Delivery Services You Can Order Online

Over 21 million Americans – that is about 7% of the population have diabetes. There is, however, a gap in the food market! It seems we can accommodate for paleo, gluten-free, and low-calorie, but there don’t seem to be the same options for diabetic friendly meals. You see it in restaurants, and you see it in meal kit delivery services. Originally, I wanted to compile a list of diabetic friendly meal kit services, delivering pre-portioned ingredients like Blue Apron, but only found one! A few can be customized to fit into a diet suitable for someone with diabetes, but so far, it’s just the one service that specializes this category of meal kits. Luckily, I found nine others that deliver frozen meals that cater to the crowd battling diabetes. Our bodies break down the carbs we eat into glucose and sends them into the bloodstream. Usually, the pancreas should produce insulin to transfer the glucose to body cells. For people with diabetes, however, the pancreas is either unable to create adequate insulin or, the cells are unresponsive to the insulin. The inadequate insulin production leads to high blood sugar levels. It is therefore essential for people with diabetes to watch the carbohydrates they eat (including sugar!). They must avoid causing spikes in their blood glucose levels. Diabetes also makes the body susceptible to cardiovascular conditions and preventing them should also be factored into the diet. Prepared meals specializing in fare designed for folks with diabetes takes out the stress of always picking the perfect diet-friendly foods, and then making them into a delicious meal. Usually, you have to choose one or the other – healthy or tasty. When someone else cooks, they can figure out how to combine both! This type of food service is also very relevant Continue reading >>
