Are Diabetic Test Strips Usually Covered By Insurance? - Agingcare.com

Are diabetic test strips usually covered by insurance? They are covered as long as the doctor writes a prescription for them. They are under Part B of Medicare. A few pharmacies only work with Part D and not Part B. If your pharmacy does not work with Part B, switch to one that does so the diabetic testing supplies will be covered. Most pharmacies will work with Part B, so it is rarely a problem. I am not aware such point. Can you please name a few pharmacies that work with Part B of Medicare. I need the solution for my grandmother. Let me add that some health insurance companies have preferred diabetic supply companies. You can order online, by mail or phone and they ship to your door free of charge. They just need a prescription from your doctor. You get huge savings, IMO. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say the name of the company, but if you google, diabetic supplies in Twinsburg, OH you should find it. I've used them for years and it's much less expensive than buying them from a pharmacy. My mother has used 4 different pharmacies since I've been here. Three of these will file Part B. One of them stopped for some reason, so we switched over to our current pharmacy in the Health Mart chain. They will file Part B for her diabetic testing supplies. QVC and Walgreen also did Part B. Just ask the pharmacy how they handle Part B for diabetic testing supplies, then select a pharmacy who handles it. Jessie beat me to it but follow her advice as well as Sunny for more savings. I agree ask the pharmacy and you could ask the doctor who they work with as well. One thing to consider is that if you can get part D for prescription coverage open enrollment is available now but ends on Dec 7th. Might be worth checking into. Either way, you should be able to get it. I did this for mo Continue reading >>

Omnis Health - Embrace Taking Glucose Meter Review - Diabetes Well Being - Trusted News, Recipes And Community

The Omnis Health Embrace is a relatively newer talking blood glucose monitor. Incredibly, I had not yet reviewed a talking meter when I first reviewed the Embrace in March 2012. Unfortunately, I am not sure I picked the right one to start with. The Embrace has some admirable qualities, but I dont think the meter is ready for prime time yet. Lets start with the positive and see where this leads us. Talking Feature: Many diabetics need verbal assistance with using their glucose meter. Omnis has a nice video demonstrating the talking feature and other features of the meter. I touch upon a little more regarding the talking feature below in the disadvantages. Price: Lets face it. This meter is cheap. You can pick up the meter for about $15 and 50 test strips for about the same price. Auto Coding: Again, if you want (and even need) testing simple, this is a no code glucose meter option. Marketing Material: The Omnis Health Embrace website is simply awful. It lists a couple of key features of the meter but almost nothing else. For most information, including where to buy the meter, the company wants you to fill out a contact form. Really? Website: How about that talking feature? Does it come in other languages besides English? You cant tell by looking at the Omnis website. The website gives no information. The meter brochure states that it is bi-lingual and later in the brochure it states that you can set the meter to select another language besides English. Only after looking through 6 different products downloads, not on the main Embrace meter page by the way, did I find that the other available language is Spanish. For those of you who only speak English, you probably dont care, but this type of oversight is indicative of the entire site. Another example of poor quality co Continue reading >>

Do Diabetic Test Strips Expire?

Do Diabetic Test Strips Expire?

Glucose test strips are expensive. Are you wasting money if you throw away expired strips? Are they still accurate if you use them after they have expired? These are important questions to ask if you cannot afford new test strips, or want to use old ones. Furthermore, you may have too many and want to sell diabetic test strips before they expire. A company named Glucomart performed some tests to help answer these questions. The design and results of their study are shown below. Design They used test strips from different manufacturers that had been expired for 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 years. The expired strips were compared with the same brand unexpired strips. Three control solutions were used: normal, high, and low concentration glucose solutions. Test trips were tested three times in each control solution. Statistics were used to test the accuracy of each strip. The brands tested included: Accu-Check Aviva Plus Accu-Check Compact Advocate Bayer Breeze 2 Bayer Contour Bayer Contour Next Element Embrace FreeStyle FreeStyle Insulinx FreeStyle Lite Liberty Nova Max One Precision Xtra One Touch Ultra One Touch Ultra Blue TrueBalance TrueTest Results The accuracy of the test strips depended on: The brand of the test strip. The length of time since expiration. [thumbnail target=”_self” alt=”Accuracy of the test strips by brand ” src=”There was no significant difference between the accuracy of unexpired strips and those that had been expired for up to 1 year. Most strips that expired 2 years previously were accurate, except for Precision Xtra: Precision Xtra strips that expired 2 years ago were not accurate or precise. Those that expired 3 years ago gave false low readings. Most test strips that expired at least 5 years ago were less precise and accurate. They sometimes ga Continue reading >>

A New Talking Meter

A New Talking Meter

At least 38 companies now offer us meters that we can use to test our blood. I list and link them in my web page "Blood Glucose Meters," Part 14 of the On-line Diabetes Resources. Almost all of those 38 companies sell their meters in the U.S., and most of them have several different meters for sale here. So why would we ever need a new one? For one thing, meters are getting better. While they still aren’t good enough, higher standards of accuracy and precision may be coming soon, as I wrote here a year ago. Instead, meter manufacturers focus on adding features. Many of these features are just nice bells and whistles. But one feature is essential for some of us. Since loss of vision is all too common a complication of diabetes, many of us need a blood glucose meter that will talk to us. Not only people who are totally blind but the much larger number of us who have limited vision need a meter that they can listen to rather than look at. Actually, we have had talking meters for many years. Diagnostic Devices in Charlotte, North Carolina, has offered two different Prodigy meters for at least five years, as I indicate on my "Blood Glucose Meters" web page. Diabetic Supply of Suncoast in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, offers two different versions of the Advocate blood glucose meters that talk. Last year Omnis Health in Natick, Massachusetts, became the third company to currently offer a talking meter, the Embrace Blood Glucose Monitoring System. And now here is BioSense Medical Devices in Duluth, Georgia, with another talking meter, the Solo V2. We all the choices already available, does anyone need the new meter? The Solo V2 Talking Meter I think so. It has several advantages over the meters that we already had. BioSense took nearly two years to design and manufacture the meter Continue reading >>

Can I Change Brands Of Test Strips In My Glucose Monitor Kit?

Can I Change Brands Of Test Strips In My Glucose Monitor Kit?

Nope! No generics in the meter biz. Every brand of meter will only work with its own kind of strips. Within some brands, a particular strip will work in several different meters. OneTouch comes to mind as a good example of a platform with a number of meters that will all work with the same strip. With other brands, every meter in the lineup has its own unique strip, AccuChek would be a good example of this approach. Other manufactures may produce generic test strips that work with your glucose monitor kit. These are usually cheaper than brand name test strips. However, always carefully check the packaging of the generic test strips to see if your glucose monitor kit is listed as compatible. A generic test strip may not work with your monitor even if it looks exactly like the brand name one. If your results seem unusual, the generic test strips may not be working properly. Using Expired Test Strips

Using Expired Test Strips

Using expired test strips can save you a lot of money, but are they accurate? This is an important question for diabetics who can not afford new test strips or for those who want to know their old test strips are still safe. We tested several brands of test strips that had been expired between 1 and 5 years and found that accuracy depended upon the length of time since expiration and the brand of test strip. Test strips were tested with brand specific controls that had at least 6 months until expiration. Test strips were tested 3 times per each control solution (normal, high, low) and averages, standard deviations, and %RSD were used to determine accuracy and precision. Brands of test strips tested included: One Touch Ultra, One Touch Ultra Blue, FreeStyle Lite, FreeStyle, FreeStyle Insulinx, Accu-Chek Aviva Plus, Accu-Chek Compact, Bayer Breeze 2, Bayer Contour, Bayer Contour Next, Advocate, Element, Embrace, Liberty, Precision Xtra, TrueTest, TrueBalance, and Nova Max. Results are for educational purposes only and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please follow the advice of your physician. Expired Test Strips Data Test strips that had been expired for 1 year or less were not found to have a statistically significant variation in readings compared to unexpired test stirps. The majority of test strips at the 2 year mark were within the control solution range with the exception of Precision Xtra. Precision Xtra test strips that had been expired for more than 1 year were very slow at absorbing the control solution and readings were neither accurate nor precise. At three years past expiration Precision Xtra test strips read on average 102 below for high controls and read low (<20 mg/dL) for low controls. Test strips that had been expired m Continue reading >>

Are Blood Glucose Meters Accurate? New Data On 18 Meters

Are Blood Glucose Meters Accurate? New Data On 18 Meters

Results from the Diabetes Technology Society’s Blood Glucose Meter Surveillance Program identifies only six out of 18 meters that passed. Did yours make the cut? The Diabetes Technology Society (DTS) recently revealed long-awaited results from its Blood Glucose Monitor System (BGMS) Surveillance Program. The rigorous study tested the accuracy of 18 popular blood glucose meters (BGM) used in the US. These FDA-cleared meters were purchased through retail outlets and tested rigorously at three study sites in over 1,000 people (including 840 people with diabetes). The results were troubling: only six out of the 18 devices met the DTS passing standard for meter accuracy – within 15% or 15 mg/dl of the laboratory value in over 95% of trials. The devices that passed were: Contour Next from Ascensia (formerly Bayer) – 100% Accu-Chek Aviva Plus from Roche – 98% Walmart ReliOn Confirm (Micro) from Arkray – 97% CVS Advanced from Agamatrix – 97% FreeStyle Lite from Abbott – 96% Accu-Chek SmartView from Roche – 95% The devices that failed were: Walmart ReliOn Prime from Arkray – 92% OneTouch Verio from LifeScan – 92% OneTouch Ultra 2 from LifeScan – 90% Walmart ReliOn Ultima from Abbott – 89% Embrace from Omnis Health – 88% True Result from HDI/Nipro (Trividia) – 88% True Track from HDI/Nipro (Trividia) – 81% Solus V2 from BioSense Medical – 76% Advocate Redi-Code+ from Diabetic Supply of Suncoast – 76% Gmate Smart from Philosys – 71% Get the full data and all the accuracy information here. While all of these meters received FDA clearance at some point, this study shows that not all are equivalent in terms of accuracy. The FDA looks at company-reported trials when it reviews new meters; this study took an independent look, purchasing the meters di Continue reading >>

Performance Variability Of Seven Commonly Used Self-monitoring Of Blood Glucose Systems: Clinical Considerations For Patients And Providers

Performance Variability of Seven Commonly Used Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose Systems: Clinical Considerations for Patients and Providers 1Rainier Clinical Research Center, Renton, Washington 2CGParkin Communications Inc., Boulder City, Nevada Corresponding Author: Christopher G. Parkin, M.S., CGParkin Communications Inc., 219 Red Rock Rd., Boulder City, NV 8900; email address [email protected] Copyright 2013 Diabetes Technology Society This article has been cited by other articles in PMC. Blood glucose data are frequently used in clinical decision making, thus it is critical that self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) systems consistently provide accurate results. Concerns about SMBG accuracy have prompted the development of newly proposed International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards: 95% of individual glucose results shall fall within 15 mg/dl of the results of the manufacturers reference procedure at glucose concentrations <100 mg/dl and within 15% for values 100 mg/dl. We evaluated seven marketed systems against the current and proposed ISO criteria (criterion A). Capillary blood samples were collected from 100 subjects and tested on seven systems: Accu-Chek Aviva Plus, Advocate Redi-Code, Element, Embrace, Prodigy Voice, TRUEbalance, and WaveSense Presto. Results were compared with manufacturers documented reference system, YSI or perchloric acid hexokinase; three different strip lots from each system were tested on each subject, in duplicate. Compared against current ISO criteria (95% within 15 mg/dl for values <75 mg/dl and 20% for values 75 mg/dl) the Accu-Chek Aviva Plus, Element, and WaveSense Presto systems met accuracy criteria. However, only the Accu-Chek Aviva Plus met the proposed ISO criteria (criterion A) in all three lots. The ot Continue reading >>

Blood Sugar (glucose) Test Strips

How often is it covered? Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers some diabetic test supplies, including blood sugar test strips as durable medical equipment (DME). Who's eligible? All people with Part B who have diabetes are covered. Your costs in Original Medicare If your supplier accepts assignment, you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount, and the Part B deductible applies. Medicare pays for different kinds of DME in different ways. Depending on the type of equipment: You may need to rent the equipment. You may need to buy the equipment. You may be able to choose whether to rent or buy the equipment. Medicare will only cover your DME if your doctors and DME suppliers are enrolled in Medicare. Doctors and suppliers have to meet strict standards to enroll and stay enrolled in Medicare. If your doctors or suppliers aren’t enrolled, Medicare won’t pay the claims submitted by them. It’s also important to ask your suppliers if they participate in Medicare before you get DME. If suppliers are participating suppliers, they must accept assignment. If suppliers are enrolled in Medicare but aren’t “participating,” they may choose not to accept assignment. If suppliers don't accept assignment, there’s no limit on the amount they can charge you. Competitive Bidding Program If you live in or visit certain areas, you may be affected by Medicare's Competitive Bidding Program. In most cases, Medicare will only help pay for these equipment and supplies if they're provided by contract suppliers when both of these apply: Contract suppliers can't charge you more than the 20% coinsurance and any unmet yearly deductible for any equipment or supplies included in the Competitive Bidding Program. You may need to use specific suppliers for some types of diabetes testing sup Continue reading >>
