Especially in patients who are genetically prone to thrombosis, cerebral infarction may develop due to inflammation, dehydration, and hyperviscocity secondary to DKA. A 6-year-old child with DKA is diagnosed with cerebral infarction after respiratory insufficiency, convulsion, and altered level of consciousness. Femoral and external iliac venous thrombosis also developed in a few hours after central femoral catheter had been inserted. Heterozygous type of factor V Leiden and PAI-14G/5G mutation were detected. In patients with DKA, cerebral infarction may be suspected other than cerebral edema when altered level of consciousness, convulsion, and respiratory insufficiency develop and once cerebral infarction occurs the patients should also be evaluated for factor V Leiden and PAI-14G/5G mutation analysis in addition to the other prothrombotic risk factors. Participate in flashcards for terminology Identify normal limits, high limits," Presentation transcript: 2 Objectives: Explain the signs and symptoms of high blood glucose. Participate in flashcards for terminology Identify normal limits, high limits, and very high limits Discuss diabetic ketoacidosis View video on ketoacidosis Discuss treatment of high blood glucose 3 High blood glucose, also known as hyperglycemia, is the technical term for high blood glucose (blood sugar). High blood glucose happens when the body has too little insulin or when the body can't use insulin properly. 5 People who do not have diabetes typically have fasting blood glucose levels that run under 100 mg/dl. In general high blood glucose is considered "high" when it is 160 mg/dl or above your individual blood glucose target. At diagnosis, some diabetics have blood glucose that surpasses 1000 mg/dl! This is often a fatal number. 6 What is ketoacedosis? Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious complication of diabetes that occurs when your body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones. This usually occurs when a diabetic is ill or has high blood glucose readings. 7 Diabetic ketoacidosis signs and symptoms often develop quickly, sometimes within 24 hours. For some, these signs and symptoms may be the first indication of having diabetes. You may notice: Excessive thirst Frequent urination Nausea and vomiting Abdominal pain Weakness or fatigue Shortness of breath Fruity-scented breath Confusion 8 SOUR Continue reading >>
