If you would like to tell us about a blog, nominate them by emailing us at [email protected]! Diabetes is one of the largest health issues facing Americans today. More than 29 million adults in the U.S. have diabetes — and almost one quarter of them don’t know they have it. A further 86 million adults in the U.S. have prediabetes, a condition which increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A whopping 90 percent of these people are unaware of that, too. Both forms of diabetes — type 1 and type 2 — are chronic conditions, meaning they require a lifetime of careful treatment to be properly managed. If left untreated or improperly managed, diabetes can cause serious health complications. For those living with diabetes, the condition can be isolating and take up a significant amount of time as well as mental and emotional energy. Staying on top of your treatments can also be challenging, as everyday things can make a big impact on blood glucose readings, and treatment options are always changing. That’s why we’ve rounded up the best diabetes blogs out there. Whether you’re looking for recipes, resources, treatment options, or simple tips for living well, you’re sure to find something here for you. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in Dec 2009 with blood sugars from the 180s to the 220s (10 12.3 mmol) and an A1c of 8.6. It was certainly not unexpected, given my family history and my gestational diabetes during my pregnancies. When I went to my first diabetes education class I was the only newly diagnosed diabetic there who was not on medication yet (thanks to a doctor who believed in me!). Type 2 Diabetes And The Diet That Cured Me

Type 2 Diabetes And The Diet That Cured Me

Why me? At 59 I was 10st 7lb, 5ft 7in, and had never been overweight. I ran and played cricket regularly and didn't drink alcohol excessively. Yet at a routine check-up I was told that I had type 2 diabetes. In 10 years I could be dependent on insulin, it could affect my sight, feet, ears, heart and I had a 36% greater chance of dying early. In type 1 diabetes, the body produces none of the insulin that regulates our blood sugar levels. Very high glucose levels can damage the body's organs. Patients with type 2 diabetes, however, do produce insulin - just not enough to keep their glucose levels normal. Because I was fit and not overweight (obesity is a major risk factor in type 2 diabetes; however, a number of non-obese people, particularly members of south Asian communities, are also prone to it), my doctor told me I could control my condition with diet alone. Desperate for information, I headed to the web, where I found a report about a research trial at Newcastle University led by Professor Roy Taylor. His research suggested type 2 diabetes could be reversed by following a daily 800-calorie diet for eight weeks. When our bodies are deprived of normal amounts of food they consume their own fat reserves, with the fat inside organs used up first. The idea of Taylor's diet is to use up the fat that is clogging up the pancreas and preventing it from creating insulin, until normal glucose levels return. With my GP's blessing and a home glucose-testing kit, I began my experiment. The diet was strict: three litres of water a day, three 200-calorie food supplements (soups and shakes) and 200 calories of green vegetables. Thanks to my doctor's dietary guidance, and running three times a week, I had already lost a stone. Yet my glucose levels were still above 6mmol/L (millimols Continue reading >>

Beet egg whites to stiff peaks- put aside 4. THEN fold in your dry ingredients slowly. 5. Bring the water to a boil and add it to the vinegar 6. THEN add your wet ingredients slowly to your dry ingredients. Don't over mix the dough, the consistency should resemble Play-Doh. 8. Moisten hands and form dough into 4 or 8 pieces of bread. You can also make hot dog or hamburger buns. Place on a greased baking sheet or parchment paper. 9. Bake on lower rack in oven for 5060 minutes, depending on the size of your bread. They're done when you hear a hollow sound when tapping the bottom of the bun. Serve with butter and toppings of your choice. Store the bread in the fridge or freezer. After you roll your dough into a ball cut it in half, then into smaller rolls. Using wet hands pick up each roll and get the roll wet (not soaked) this will make a nice crust on the outside of the bread. Then you can sprinkle the roll with salt or butter, or herb butter, or whatever you like. Also when I made the 2nd set of rolls yesterday i ran out of almond flour so I did 1 1/2c almond flour and 1 1/2 c Sunflower Flour and they tasted great, and the smell was so yummy when you cut a roll open! My Mother In law said she liked this roll recipe best! Now THAT"S A Compliment! (trust me on this) -------------------------------------------------------------------- This recipe is adapted from an earlier bread recipe by Maria Emmerich. Preheat oven to 325 degrees and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. (For egg-free/vegan) To a small bowl, add flax seeds and water. Whisk together until fully incorporated. Set aside to set for at least 5 minutes. To a mixing bowl, add dry ingredients and whisk together. Melt coconut oil in microwave until liquid, about 30 seconds. Health Information Sharing On Facebook: An Exploratory Study On Diabetes Mellitus

Volume 9, Issue 6 , NovemberDecember 2016, Pages 708-712 Author links open overlay panel Zainab A.AlQarnia FaiselYunusb Mowafa S.Househac Increasingly, people are using Facebook (FB) to share health information. However, little is known about the type of information sharing and its potential health consequences in the Arabic speaking world. This study attempts to fill this knowledge gap for diabetes mellitus (DM). We conducted a retrospective qualitative FB content analysis using predefined eligibility criteria. The analysis was restricted to diabetes related groups in the Arabic speaking world. The data were collected between June 2010 and December 2015. A total of 55 groups were screened of which seven met the eligibility criteria. We found 6107 posts in Arabic related to DM of which 1551 posts were included for further analysis. There were 458 (30%) FB posts from Egypt with no posts from Somalia, Yemen, Comoros, and Djibouti. The majority of the posts, 863 (56%), were from females. The focus of the posts was on sharing personal experiences (n=423, 27%), raising awareness (n=210, 3.5%), providing spiritual support (n=162, 10.4%), sharing latest research (n=147, 9.5%), and providing education (n=110, 7.1%) on DM. A large number of the posts by people in 4060 year age group were around finding out diagnosis related information due to limited access to care in their home countries. Patients with DM are increasingly sharing their health information with other FB users. This study will help inform future research with regard to health information sharing and designing appropriate interventions to harness the power of social media in improving public health.
