Medical Pedicures Give Clients Peace Of Mind

Medical Pedicures Give Clients Peace Of Mind

Medical pedicures give clients peace of mind Editors note: This story appeared in the Healthy Living section on April 29, 2012. Sharon Westerlund is a big fan of pedicures. But shedoesnt frequent a salon at the nearest shopping center for her foot needs. Instead, Westerlund goes to Anh Hastings, a certified medical nail technician who works in the office of Rappahannock Foot and Ankle Specialists. Hastings provides a level of knowledge and experience that Westerlund said exceeds what she has found at nail salons. Ive been seeing Anh for about two years now, Westerlund said. If something is wrong with my foot, she can tell. I just like going to the doctors office better. Hastings worked as a nail technician at salons for years before deciding to pursue certification as a medical nail technician in 2002. Medical nail technicians are licensed by the state after successfully completing advanced education and training. They are taught to recognize problems such as fungus, and they learn advanced nail and foot care. An internship with a podiatrist is a standard part of MNT training. Many people are surprised to learn I completed internships, Hastings said. Hastings work space resembles a typical room at a doctors officeexcept that a salon chair with a foot bath stands in the middle of the room instead of an examining table. Working out of a physicians practice gives her clients peace of mind, she said. Its what prompted Westerlund, of Fredericksburg, to seek out Hastings for pedicures. I know Im never going to have to worry about my health with Anh, Westerlund said. The $45 pedicure Hastings provides includes everything people expect from a salon pedicurenail polishing, callus removal, filing and a foot bath. But there are additional benefits. Medical nail technicians like H Continue reading >>

Pedicures: Pampering Your Feet One Toe at a Time The feet are under a lot of pressure, literally. They are the key to mobility, and thats why foot care is so important. People tend to jam feet into tight shoes, pushing the toes and toenails into a very uncomfortable position. After awhile corns and calluses can develop, along with sore feet and toenails. Who is better fitted than a foot specialist and team to handle all facets of the foot. In recent years, nail infections/toenail fungus have been traced back to nail salons; thus, many patients have opted out of pampering their feet and hands. We want our patients to feel confident about their nail treatments, and we our confident about our services and sterile environment. A medical pedicure differs from the typical nail salon pedicures. The sterilization process for pedicures and manicures are as follows: We dont reuse any buffers and nail files. During a clients first visit, we give them their own nail kit with a file, buffer and/or a pumice stone. We Tailor to Your Feet: Classic & Diabetic Pedicures No foot is the same, which is why our staff of podiatrists and nail technicians offer two different pedicures: Treat Your Feet and Diabetic Treat Your Feet. Cleanse the skin of the feet to remove bacteria Trim the nails straight across, avoiding irritation and ingrown toenails Gently use a pumice stone on tougher parts of the foot The extended pedicure care for diabetes is very important. Massaging the foot and leg helps with circulation. If a person with diabetes has poor circulation, itll be harder to fight injuries to the feet, thus, increasing the risk of infection. The diabetic lotion softens the skin, so feet wont crack from drynessthis also decreases the chances of infection and injury to the foot. We target many Continue reading >>

The idea of a pedicure begins with good intentions. You just want to send your hard-working feet a little extra love and attention. Sitting back in a chair and letting someone else work on your toes and skin can feel refreshing and relieve a lot of stress and tension. The problem arises in the fact that you have to be certain that the nail salon you choose practices hygienic procedures and that they are effective. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. We think you deserve to be pampered without concerns, so we are proud to offer MediCureNow the medical pedicure. Did you know that it takes at least 10 minutes for sterilizing agents at nail salons to be effective? If not, how can you be sure that the people taking care of your feet are really taking care of your feet? The reason sterilization is so important in the foot care industry is because feet are a breeding ground for microorganisms. Fungus and bacteria thrive in warm, dark environments and do not require sunlight to survive. Kind of sounds like your feetor someone elses!when they are covered in footwear. For this reason, the American Academy of Dermatology warns that getting a pedicure does include health risks including fungal infections and bacterial skin infections. Thats why we are happy to offer a worry-free option with MediCureNow. If you do choose to go to a salon, keep in mind these measures that you should take tominimize the risk of infection: Make sure that each appointment begins at least ten minutes after the previous one. Inquire about sanitation procedures and ask to see the facilitys license, along with that of the nail technician who will work on your nails. Visually inspect the salon and worker practices yourself. As soon as you see any warning signsdirty floor, tools being dropped and not Continue reading >>

Nails By Mindy - 10 Photos & 18 Reviews - Nail Salons - 5501 Independence Pkwy, Plano, Tx - Phone Number - Yelp

First I just want to shout out to Mindy and say THANK YOU! Mindy literally saved me a trip to the podiatrist or a very painful toenail extraction. I watched my son endure having two ingrown toenails surgically removed. The weeks that followed were full of pain, infection, draining, medicine and antibiotics. Needless to say, as a diabetic, I was scared to death to see I had an ingrown toenail just two weeks later! I searched and searched and found Mindy. Mindy saved me from surgery. She gave me a completely excellent pedicure and fixed my ingrown toe nail with NO PAIN. She was so careful with my infected nail. I could not believe how wonderful she was. I will never let anyone else give me a pedicure as long as Mindy is around. She is truly an old school pedicure specialist unlike the common strip mall nail salons available on every corner. Mindy is one of a kind. KUDDOS to you Mindy for saving me from surgery!!Mindy is located in a high-rise with no sign out front. She's on the second floor and when you walk in she will greet you with a kind and unassuming persona. She is fabulous. Mindy, where have you been all my life???Do not hesitate to go to her for a medical pedicure for diabetes AND for your ingrown toe nails. Call her with any questions - she's super friendly. She is really the best. I made an appointment with Mindy because of her great Yelp rating and I was not disappointed! My feet...were not feet. They were hooves. She transformed my callused hot mess into beautiful soft feet, with pretty nails! She was extremely personable, kind and sweet. She was also very careful, thorough and professional in her services. Mindy even gave me "homework" and advice to help keep my feet from getting so bad again. Absolutely loved it and feel transformed! Mindy is a lovely, wa Continue reading >>

9 Pedicure Safety Tips for People With Diabetes Sign Up for Our Living with Diabetes Newsletter Sign up for more FREE Everyday Health newsletters . By Athena Philis-Tsimikas, MD, Special to Everyday Health Summertime is beach and sandal weather, whichmeans your feet and toes are more frequently on display. Professional pedicures can help your toes look their best and pamper your feet, but too often poor sanitation practices, shared tools, and the work of overzealous nail technicians can result in skin injuries or infections . Pedicure problems can happen to anyone, but if you have type 2diabetes , you need to be especially careful about protecting your feet . An infection can raise your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, can interfere with proper healing and increase your risk of serious complications likeulcers or even amputation. Before you schedule a pedicure, check with your physician to make sure its okay to have one. Once you getthe green light, do your feet a favor and learn what to look for and what to avoid at nail salons. Taking a few basic precautions can significantly reduce infection risks and lead to a safer, more pleasant experience. Know when to postpone a pedicure. If you currently have any infections, cuts, or open sores on your legs, feet, or toenails, skip the salon since these will make you even more vulnerable to problems. Instead, contact your physician for a referral to a podiatrist or other professional who is medically trained to care for feet. Avoid shaving your legs for a day or two before your pedicure. Shaving can leave tiny nicks in your skin (even if you cant see them) and increase the chance of infection. Its fine to shave afterward. Stick with a salon that is clean and practices impeccable sanitation. Tell the manager you have diabete Continue reading >>

Dr. Walsh, You always make me feel so much better. After having a severe case of Plantar Fasciitis, we tried all procedures and treatments to reduce pain and inflammation. Nothing worked. I was told by Dr. Bachmann of a new procedure, a laser treatment (MLS) that was new but very effective. I tried it and after treatment #1 I already felt an improvement. I'm on treatment 9 of 10 and can honestly say it has relieved the pain and constant irritation I was experiencing for the past 9 months. I would recommend this treatment and the excellent service of Dr. Bachmann's team of health care professionals. After just 2 treatments with the MLS Laser for my ankle injury, I felt a significant decrease in pain and swelling. I am very active in the gym so it was very important for me to heal quickly. Each treatment is quick and painless as well which is a definite plus! I would recommend this treatment to anyone in pain! I wanted to tell you that you have the nicest staff in the world. They seem to go out of their way for your patients. I wanted to thank you for being so tender with Hallie yesterday. She was eager to tell me that you thought she was "99.9% perfect." Although her psoriasis/arthritis in no way defines her, I know she is aware of her health versus her three sisters. You were the best part of her day and it meant the world to me. He's all fixed up thanks to your patience, sympathy and skill, Dr. Bachmann. Dr. Bachmann, Thank you for fixing my foot, so I could go climb Kilimanjaro! My 2 girlfriends and I summitted on Christmas Eve. What a gift you gave me - thank you! Thank you for your exceptional skill, warmth and generous spirit! Dr. Bachmann, You did a great job on both my toes. I am healing well on this last one. It feels good to mark it off my "to do" list. Now I Continue reading >>

Spa Safety For People With Diabetes

Spa Safety For People With Diabetes

What’s more relaxing than soaking your feet and getting a pedicure? If you have diabetes, you'll have more peace of mind if you take precautions to avoid nicks or cuts on your skin at the spa or salon. You'll also lower your odds of getting an infection. “Your blood flow is reduced, and even a small cuticle cut can get infected,” says Chuck Collins, 66, of Atlanta. Collins has type 2 diabetes, but he doesn't let that stop him from visiting a nail salon every 2 weeks for a pedicure. To stay safe, Collins bought a set of his own nail-care tools, such as files and cuticle sticks, for his specific use at the salon. “They do not use my tools on anyone’s hands or feet. And when I come in, I insist that they sterilize the bowl before I put my feet in,” he says, adding that they know he has diabetes. In general, it’s safe to get manicures or pedicures at a spa or nail salon if you have diabetes that's well-controlled, says Fred Williams, MD. He's a clinical endocrinologist in Louisville, KY. But choose carefully before you get services somewhere. “The general rule of thumb is that there are really good places to get a pedicure and there are bad places,” Williams says. “Talk to someone you know who has been to that particular spa. Make sure they practice good hygiene, that their soaking solutions are changed frequently, and their instruments sterilized before each use. If the salon doesn’t seem quite right or doesn’t look clean, don’t go back.” Always tell your nail technician or any spa-service provider that you have diabetes. This lets them know to use extra care while pampering you, even if you don’t feel anything is wrong, says Brent Bauer, MD. He is the medical director of the International Spa Association. “Patients with diabetes often have Continue reading >>
