Diabetic Drinking Guide: Holiday Edition. Cocktails, Wine, Mixers And More.

Happy Holidays! When family and friends get together during the holiday season, it usually involves a lot of different types of foods and beverages. When you are living with diabetes, one wrong decision can cause big problems, especially when it comes to choosing what to drink. This article will help you sort through the most popular drink options so you can choose what works best for you (it even includes drink carbohydrate charts - charts are great!). This includes beer, wine, spirits, mixed drinks and cocktails, shooters, juices, mixers, holiday punch, non-alcoholic drinks and even eggnog. So at this year's Christmas party or New Year's Eve event, you'll be able to make an informed decision for just about any drink that comes your way. There are two things to be mindful of when choosing something to drink: the amount of carbohydrate it provides and whether or not it contains alcohol (more on that later). For non-alcoholic beverages: Select diet sodas, seltzer or club soda instead of regular soda or tonic water. A non-diet soda can contain as much as 49 grams of carbohydrate per serving compared to the zero carbs found in a diet version. Choose unsweetened iced tea instead of sweetened and avoid the punch bowl. If you like to sweeten your coffee or tea, then it's always helpful to bring your favorite sugar-free sweetener along with you just in case there is none available. The chart below shows the number of carbs in commonly served non-alcoholic drinks (juices appear later). Beverage Carbs per 8-oz Carbs per 12-oz Diet Soda 0g 0g Regular Soda 23g 35g Regular Cream Soda 33g 49g Seltzer / Club Soda 0g 0g Tonic Water 22g 32g Egg Nog 20g Iced Tea, Unsweetened 0.4g 0.6g Iced Tea, Sweetened 22g 33g Fruit Punch (regular) 13-30g Holiday Punch with Juice & Soda 24g Holiday Pu Continue reading >>

8 Drinks That Help Fight Diabetes

8 Drinks That Help Fight Diabetes

So one great addition to a healthier lifestyle for people who are living with diabetes is to include more water in your diet. The problem here? Plain water every day can taste kind of boring, and people with diabetes may already feel that their diets are restricted. So what are some good ways to up your water intake while not completely boring your palate? One simple solution is to incorporate spa water into your diet. With a name like that, it sounds indulgent, and fortunately, it can taste that way, too, while still being very good for you. Spa water is a delicious combination of fresh fruits, and sometimes herbs, that you can infuse into cold water. It's great to keep a pitcher in your fridge running, and you can mix up a variety of different combinations with whatever ingredients you like so that you don't get tired of the same tastes every day. We recommend a combination of diabetes-fighting lemon and lime wheels with some anti-oxidant-packed fresh berries. You can slice up just one or two strawberries and they'll infuse a whole pitcher of water with their bright, berry sweetness. Peppermint, which is thought to potentially help both nerve and digestive disorders associated with diabetes, can be added to spa water as well, for a fresh, invigorating, and healthful taste. Eating and drinking well is something everyone should enjoy, and having diabetes should never prevent you from doing that. But learning how to make healthy (and tasty) drink choices when you have diabetes may take some getting used to. Take a look at our suggestions to find out more about healthful drink options you should feel great about enjoying. Chamomile Tea No calories, big flavor, and a boatload of antioxidants have made chamomile tea trendy for health reasons, especially for diabetics. Resea Continue reading >>

Cranberry-blood Orange Sugar-free Spritzer Recipe | It's Yummi

This sugar-free spritzer recipe was created as part of a social shopper amplificationwith Collective Bias and its client. I was compensated for creating the recipe post, but as always, all thoughts and opinions are my own. Healthy, cranberry blood orange sugar-free spritzer is a fruit sweetened holiday drink. Fresh blood oranges and cranberries pack this healthy drink recipe with healthy antioxidants and a sweet, tangy, refreshing taste. Im not being a grump when I say that Im seriously glad to see 2013 come to an end. I have unmet goals that Id like a fresh start on, including my plan to be 50 pounds lighter by my 50th birthday at the end of January. My goal to be #FitBy50 was derailed by the dreaded carb-loaded holidays. Although I have lowered my intake of carbohydrates over the past 9 months, it seems impossible to dismiss them completely. Truthfully, Id rather eat starchy carbs in moderation than to deny myself. That leads to binge eating by the light of the refrigerator. No, Ive NEVER done that. Well, maybe once or twice or 10 times. Anyhoo, the problem began when I couldnt decide between making mashed potatoes , sweet potato casserole , or stuffing for Thanksgiving dinner. Feeling the need to make and consume them all is my downfall. What to do when youre a health goals slacker: With 33 days before my 50th birthday, Im only half way to my goal. *Insert hammer to head*. Losing 25 pounds in 33 days is doable for some people, but Im not hopeful. Its my own fault. I wasnt making the most of my gym membership, so I cancelled it in November. Ill just jump back onto the healthy eating wagon and try again. Walking an average of 6-8 miles on the sales floor during work helps. Its not high intensity aerobics, but its keeping my heart in good shape and it burns off what I Continue reading >>

What’s To Drink?

What’s To Drink?

Staying Hydrated in the Heat On a hot day, nothing quite hits the spot like a cold drink. But cold (and hot) beverages are not just enjoyable; they’re necessary for good health. Drinking adequate fluids in hot or cold weather keeps your body hydrated and running smoothly. When your body doesn’t have enough fluids, you can feel sluggish and irritable, get headaches, and have trouble controlling your blood glucose levels. You tend to need more fluids in hot weather because more are lost through sweat. Water is a good choice for staying hydrated because it has no calories, carbohydrate, fat, alcohol, or caffeine. Beverages that contain calories, carbohydrate, fat, or caffeine still provide needed fluids, but when drunk in large quantities, they can make weight control and blood glucose control more difficult. Alcohol has a diuretic effect, meaning it increases urine output, so beverages containing alcohol can promote dehydration. When you’re thirsty, having a drink containing alcohol is not a good choice; it’s better to drink nonalcoholic beverages first to quench your thirst before drinking any alcoholic drinks for pleasure. However, alcoholic beverages also contain calories, carbohydrate, and, less commonly, fat. While water is a good choice for health reasons, many people enjoy beverages with a little more flavor, such as fruit juices, soft drinks, tea, or coffee. There’s nothing inherently wrong with any of these beverages — and in fact, fruit juices, teas, and coffees contain beneficial antioxidants — but a high consumption of sweetened beverages has been identified as one of the reasons the United States is having an obesity epidemic. Part of the problem is that people tend to ignore the calories, carbohydrate, and fat in beverages. Studies suggest that Continue reading >>

Diabetic Diet: Quick Recipe Ideas And Healthful Meal Plans

Healthy eating is also one of the most important factors in preventing the development of diabetes. A healthful diabetic diet includes foods that are rich in nutrients, low in unhealthy fats and calories, and that manage carbohydrates. It also involves carefully planning meal times and exercising portion control. This helps people with diabetes to manage their symptoms, avoid complications of diabetes, and enjoy a better quality of life. Contents of this article: Why diet is important for diabetes Eating the right foods is one of the primary ways of regulating blood sugar, or glucose, levels. Glucose is the main source of energy for the body, and it comes from carbohydrate in our foods. When blood glucose levels rise, the hormone insulin is released from the pancreas into the bloodstream.
