Home Articles The Diabetic Shoppe on 4 Steps to Help Control Your Diabetes LIVING WELL Magazine The Diabetic Shoppe on 4 Steps to Help Control Your Diabetes LIVING WELL Magazine By Brent Trice, The Diabetic Shoppe, Texoma LIVING WELL Magazine Have you ever heard the statement, Its just a small case of diabetes? Taking diabetes lightly can be a costly mistake. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in Texas and more than two million Texans have the disease. Failure to manage your diabetes can lead to major complications: heart disease, stroke, eye problems, nerve damage, kidney problems, and gum and tooth loss. The National Education Program for the National Institutes for Health suggests four steps to help control your diabetes. Step 1 LEARN about diabetes. Diabetes is a serious disease. It affects almost every part of your body. Get information, and get as much as you can find. A is knowing your A1C results. This is a blood test that shows what your blood glucose (blood sugar) has been over the last three months. The A1C goal for most people with diabetes is below seven. B is knowing your BLOOD pressure. The goal for most people with diabetes is below 130/80. C is knowing your CHOLESTEROL levels. The LDL goal for most people with diabetes is less than 100. The HDL goal for most people with diabetes is above 40. Step 3 Manage you diabetes. Many people avoid the long-term problems of diabetes by taking good care of themselves. Work with your health care team to reach your ABC goals (A1C, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol) Step 4 Get routine care to avoid problems. See your health care team at least twice a year to find and treat any problems early. Ask what steps you can take to reach your goals. To learn more about managing diabetes, I suggest the following sites: The Continue reading >>

Diabetes-friendly Holiday Dishes
Take Control of Thanksgiving Dinner The current approach to dietary management of diabetes is to tailor the meal plan for each individual. But in general, a healthy diabetic diet involves controlling total carbohydrates (particularly refined carbohydrates), reducing calories and sodium, increasing fiber, and replacing saturated fats and trans fats with more heart–healthy mono– and polyunsaturated fats. This approach, of course, is healthy for anyone who wants to eat better. Try these healthier recipes when you're in charge of Thanksgiving cooking. First up: Sunflower seeds and brown rice pack a double nutrition punch, enhancing our Multigrain Pilaf with Sunflower Seeds side dish with vitamin E and niacin. View Recipe: Multigrain Pilaf with Sunflower Seeds Tuscan Turkey Forget dry, tasteless turkey. A rub of roasted garlic and fresh sage permeates every ounce of the bird, while a Dijon and white wine baste locks in moisture for juicy, tender meat. Save the giblets for our Classic Turkey Gravy. If your turkey starts to overbrown after the first hour in the oven, cover loosely with foil, and continue roasting. Remember to let the turkey rest so juices can redistribute and the bird can cool enough to carve. View Recipe: Tuscan Turkey Chorizo and Roasted Poblano Wild Rice Stuffing Hot cooked wild rice is incredibly nutty and fragrant, a perfect counter to smoky paprika, quick roasted poblano peppers, and spicy fresh chorizo. Look for ground, raw Mexican chorizo rather than Spanish chorizo (cured, cased sausage). The rice will absorb the drippings from the sausage as the two bake together in the casserole dish. If you can’t find Mexican chorizo, try hot Italian pork or turkey sausage. We treat the rice the same as a bread stuffing—binding it with a mixture of stock, e Continue reading >>

I want coffee first thing in the morning, something sweet about 3 p.m., and most nights, I like to pile the kids beside me and watch something awesome on TV, spending an hour laughing, talking, watching and snacking. OK, so not a great habit, the snacking part. Its fine for the kids, who swim daily. Not so much for Mom and Dad, who both have desk jobs. Aging slows down your metabolism, my doctor told me recently. Then she said to cut the night snacking. Or try to. It was no small task to follow her advice without ruining my entire life. Running a health magazine gives me lots of ideas, but I needed one that worked for all of us. Heres what I came up with: I asked the family not to snack in the living room anymore.
