(Jump to Healthy Dessert Recipe Archive ) Who doesnt love a little something sweet after a meal, or enjoy a cookie to ease the stress of a rough day? While no one wants to live life without desserts, we all know the damage that too many can do to our bodies. In fact, sugar-laden desserts contribute to weight gain, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and even Alzheimers disease. You see, your blood sugar is directly linked to your risk of nearly every chronic disease. And when you dont make a conscious effort to reduce the sugar in your diet whether it be from a piece of cake, a snack of cookies or even fruit it is all too easy to consume a high sugar diet that drives up blood sugar and insulin levels, promotes inflammation , increases triglyceride levels and even speeds the physical signs of aging through the formation of AGEs . But heres the good news: You CAN enjoy healthy dessert recipes that will satisfy your sweet tooth and provide your body with nutrients that will actually work for your health not against it. One of the biggest problems with creating healthy dessert recipes is that one of the main ingredients in dessert recipes is sugar (and usually refined, processed sugars at that). And because of this, many healthy desserts contain artificial sweeteners as a replacement. But studies have shown that while artificial sweeteners may not contain calories or sugar, they are worse for your health. In fact, many common artificial sweeteners can cause a lessening of A1C control (a measure of blood sugar over time), an imbalance of healthy gut flora, free radical damage and many other harmful health effects. Thats why our dessert recipes dont use artificial sweeteners. Instead we rely on all-natural, low glycemic sweeteners such as stevia, erythritol , (with small amounts Continue reading >>

Easy Diabetic Jell-o Desserts

Easy Diabetic Jell-o Desserts

Use sugar-free Jell-O to make fruit-filled desserts.Photo Credit: olgakr/iStock/Getty Images Michelle Kerns writes for a variety of print and online publications and specializes in literature and science topics. She has served as a book columnist since 2008 and is a member of the National Book Critics Circle. Kerns studied English literature and neurology at UC Davis. Regular Jell-O gelatin or pudding might contain as much as 19 grams of sugar per serving. If you're diabetic, that can push traditional Jell-O desserts out of your dietary plan. However, sugar-free Jell-O products that contain artificial sweeteners like aspartame feature no sugar or carbohydrates in each serving. Use these products as the basis for easy desserts that won't sabotage your blood sugar level. Parfaits, desserts that feature different layers of ingredients served from individual glasses or dishes, are an easily customizable way to use sugar-free Jell-O in a diabetic-friendly dessert. A basic parfait might consist of nothing more than prepared sugar-free Jell-O cooled to room temperature, then mixed with your choice of chopped fruit, nuts or a combination, spooned into serving glasses and chilled until set. For an elaborate dessert, layer premade Jell-O pudding or gelatin -- one type or several -- with fruit, low-fat whipped topping and low-carb cookie crumbles or cake slices. A typical molded gelatin salad recipe can pack in nearly 30 grams of sugar per serving. For one that supplies extra nutrients with as little as 6 grams of carbohydrates in each 1/2-cup serving, the University of Illinois Extension advises diabetics to use sugar-free gelatin -- choose your favorite Jell-O flavor -- along with canned or chopped fresh fruit, shredded vegetables such as carrots or cabbage and slivered nuts. The Best Ways To Enjoy Dark Chocolate When You Have Diabetes

The Best Ways To Enjoy Dark Chocolate When You Have Diabetes

One of the most widely believed myths about living with type 2 diabetes is that all sweets are off-limits, and upon receiving a diabetes diagnosis, you may feel forced to say goodbye to all the after-dinner treats and 3 p.m. pick-me-ups you once loved. Fortunately, it’s actually true that some sweets are safe for people with diabetes — and in the case of dark chocolate, a moderate amount may even lead to some significant health benefits, including lower blood sugar. Among the possible perks of noshing on a square of the dark stuff are improved brain function, blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart health, according to the American Diabetes Association. Those benefits may seem like enough reason to race for the candy aisle, but not so fast. As with eating any food when you're managing diabetes, details are key. Follow this guide to enjoy dark chocolate safely without throwing your blood sugar out of whack. Why Dark Chocolate and Diabetes Make a Sweet Combination A plain square of high-cocoa dark chocolate is packed with good-for-you components that put that designer cupcake or gourmet chocolate-chip cookie to shame. “The antioxidants in chocolate help the body use its insulin more efficiently to help control blood sugar,” says Anna Simos, CDE, the diabetes education and prevention program manager at Stanford Health Care in Palo Alto, California. “This in turn helps lower blood sugar levels naturally and actually helps your body use your insulin. As a result, it helps decrease insulin resistance, which we see in type 2 diabetes.” According to an animal study published in the November 2017 issue of the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, it’s the compounds found in cocoa called cocoa flavanols that appear to enhance certain cells’ ability to secrete insuli Continue reading >>

A Sweet Life A diabetes-friendly diet calls for healthy carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables, and an eschewing of sodium, saturated fats and trans fats. One might think that this poses a problem when it comes time for dessert, but with some careful planning, desserts for those suffering from this disease can be as tasty as they are healthy. Generally speaking, baked goods are super-high in trans fats, no thanks to cups upon cups of white sugar, and sticks upon sticks of butter. But replacing these less-than-ideal ingredients with healthier alternatives is easy. Diabetic desserts often include dates, oats, and peanut butter. And don’t fret: chocolate is definitely not off-limits. We put together the best diabetes-friendly desserts we could find on diabetic food blogs. Check it out!: Continue reading >>
