According to the definition of WHO (World Health Organization) Diabetes is a chronic disease which occurs when the pancreas ( Vital Organ) does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This leads to an increased concentration of glucose in the blood (hyperglycaemia). The initial symptom of diabetes is unobvious and harmless. Patient will be likely to ignore its condition and miss the chance of early treatment. But some signs of diabetes are commonly experienced including frequent urination excessive thirst increased hunger weight loss tiredness and lack of interest and concentration. With the condition becoming seriously the symptom of a tingling sensation or numbness in the hands or feet blurred vision frequent infections and slow-healing wounds. For growth and energy our body digests what we ate. Most of the food people eat is broken down into glucose the main source of fuel for the body. After digestion glucose passes into the bloodstream and be transported to the cells which need to use glucose for growth and energy. Insulin must be present for glucose to get into cells. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. When people eat the pancreas automatically produces the right amount of insulin to move glucose from blood to the cells. But for diabetic the pancreas either produces little or no insulin or the cells do not respond appropriately to the insulin that is produced. As a result glucose cannot be well assimilated and builds up in the blood overflows into the urine and passes out of the body in the urine. To analyze why the insulin is insufficient or unworkable diabetes could be classified to three main types. is congenital caused by an auto-immune reaction where the body defence system attacks the insulin-p Continue reading >>

The Importance Of Foot Care For Diabetics

The Importance Of Foot Care For Diabetics

Israeli drone crashes in southern Lebanon Diabetes can affect every organ, but if theres one part of the body that is particularly vulnerable, it is the feet. Surprisingly, though, foot care is often ignored by diabetics and non-diabetics alike. Nearly 62 million Indians suffer from diabetes. What is startling is the little-known fact that 100,000 diabetics unnecessarily lose their legs in amputations every year, says A.P.S. Suri, diabetic foot surgeon and founding president, Indian Podiatry Association, New Delhi.Dr Suri also heads the podiatry department at Fortis C-DOC and is the director of the Diabetic Foot Care and Wound Care Centre, Delhi. A survey of type 2 diabetics in Puducherry, published in 2014 in the Indian Journal Of Endocrinology, found that only 54% of the respondents were aware that diabetes could lead to reduced foot sensation and foot ulcers, and only 22% of diabetic patients had their feet examined regularly by a health worker or doctor. If blood sugar remains high for years and diabetes is not treated effectively, it can damage the feet in two ways, says Sanjay Kala, national secretary, Indian Podiatry Association, and head of surgery at the GSVM Medical College in Kanpur. Firstly, the high glucose levels in your blood weaken nerves. Secondly, it creates vascular problems. Circulation and blood supply to the feet is diminished. This is because high glucose levels tend to clog the arteries of the feet in the same way that it affects the heart arteries. As a result of poor circulation and nerve damage, diabetics often experience a complete loss of sensation in their feet, developing a condition called neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy occurs gradually over a period of 8-10 years after one is first diagnosed as a diabetic. Thats why an early diagnosis Continue reading >>

Top 7 Special Foot Care For Diabetes Patient

In recent times, diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus has become one of the largest harmful chronic diseases across the world. The main causes of diabetes are the modern day sedentary lifestyle, genetic susceptibility, overdependence on harmful processed and packed foods, obesity and lack of physical activity. The feet of diabetic patients are at risk because diabetes can cause harm to the blood supply and nerves. According to researchers, approximately 383 million people throughout the world were suffering from diabetes in 2013. Diabetes increases the risks of stroke, heart attack, foot ulcers, eye damage and kidney failure. Types of Foot Complications Related to Diabetes There are mainly six types of diabetic foot complications like skin changes, neuropathy, calluses, foot ulcers, poor circulation and amputation. Skin Changes Diabetes can cause dry and cracked skin. It generates changes in the colour of the feet. When the levels of blood glucose become high, the body starts to lose fluid. This happens because the body is transforming the water into urine to surpass additional glucose from the body. The skin becomes dry when the damaged nerves of legs and feet don’t receive a signal to sweat. Sweating aids in keeping skin moist and soft. Broken skin increases the chances of infection as germs can easily enter the skin through the cracked area. Neuropathy Neuropathy is widely known as peripheral neuropathy. The main causes of neuropathy are repetitive injury, metabolic problems, physical trauma, and infection. Several drugs and toxins can also be the causes of neuropathy. It damages the walls of the tiny blood vessels of the nerves of the legs. It lowers the ability to feel cold, pain and heat. Various other medical conditions that can lead to neuropathy include Continue reading >>

Bengaluru Medtech Startup Has Diabetes Foot Care In Its Sights

There are over 420 million diabetics in the world, of which one million lose a leg as in, have it amputated every year. That is, one person loses a leg every 30 seconds to diabetes somewhere in the world. India has some 65 million diabetics; you do the math on how many among them undergoamputations every year. A Bengaluru startup, Yostra Labs wants to try and reduce the number of diabetic amputationswith two products aimed at diabetes foot care. Foot care is especially important for diabetics because they are at a risk of developing serious infections even from small ulcers or injuriesthatcouldlead to gangrene and subsequent amputation. Long years of poorly controlled diabetes causesnerve damage (called neuropathy)that lowers the sensitivity in the feet raising the risk of injury. The injury takes long to heal because of reducedoxygen flow to the affected part due to blood vessel damage, common among diabetics of long years. Long years of poorly controlled diabetes causesnerve damage (called neuropathy)that lowers the sensitivity in the feet Yostrahas developed two devices:Sparsh and Kadam. While Sparsh will screen diabetics to determine if they are at risk of developing nerve damage, Kadam promises to accelerate the healing process of feet ulcers in diabetes patients. Sparsh is a hand-held device, the size of a hair trimmer and Yostra claims it is the only device that combines all the three tests of touch (tactile threshold test), vibration (vibration perception threshold test), and temperature (thermal perception threshold test) to gauge nerve damage. The touch test is done completely manually by others which is totally subjective, whereas ours is an electronic device that automatically tells the exact amount of pressure via our smartphone app, says Vinayak Nandalike Continue reading >>
