Diabetes Foot Care

Diabetes Foot Care

You're more likely to have foot problems with diabetes because it can damage your nerves and lessen blood flow to your feet. The American Diabetes Association estimates that it's the reason why 1 in 5 people with diabetes who seek hospital care do so. You have to take care of your feet when you have diabetes. Poor foot care may lead to amputation of a foot or leg. Your doctor will check yours each year for problems. If you take good care of your feet, you can prevent most serious problems related to diabetes. Use mild soaps and warm water. Pat your skin dry; do not rub. Thoroughly dry your feet. After washing, put lotion on them to prevent cracking. But not between your toes! Look carefully at the tops and bottoms of your feet. Have someone else do it if you can't see them. Check for dry, cracked skin. Look for blisters, cuts, scratches, or other sores. Check for redness, increased warmth, or tenderness when you touch an area. Watch for ingrown toenails, corns, and calluses. If you get a blister or sore from your shoes, don't "pop" it. Put a bandage over it, and wear a different pair of shoes. Cut toenails after bathing, when they are soft. Trim them straight across, then smooth with a nail file. Avoid cutting into the corners of toes. You may want a podiatrist (foot doctor) to do it for you. Don't cut cuticles. Walk and work out in comfortable shoes. Don't exercise when you have open sores on your feet. Continue reading >>

Complications from foot ulcers are a leading cause of hospitalization and amputation among people with diabetes. When you have diabetes, foot care is important because you can be at higher risk for foot and wound problems for three reasons: The nerves responsible for the skin sensations might be damaged due to non-controlled diabetes. Therefore you may not be able to feel your feet, and may not notice injuries, sores, or high-pressure areas. You are more susceptible to poor circulation. Impaired circulation might delay the wound healing process. Wounds are harder to heal and can more easily become infected. Infections can develop when blood glucose is not under control. High blood glucose levels can interfere with your bodys natural defense system, increasing the chances of an infection and making the wound harder to heal. This is why foot wound care and prevention of foot wounds is extremely important for people with diabetes. All people with diabetes should follow a regular foot care plan. Always discuss any foot care concerns that you may have with your doctor and/or podiatrist, including the care of minor wounds and skin cracks. Treat even small wounds as an emergency if you have diabetes. Here are some tips for caring for your feet: Look at and touch your feet every day. Small wounds can develop at the bottom of your feet or between toes without you noticing or feeling them. Ask someone to help you if you cannot inspect your feet by yourself due to another health condition. A handheld mirror might help you observe areas that are hard to reach. Do not ignore redness, swelling, non-healing wounds, ingrown toenails, and other foot or wound problems. Bring these problems to the attention of your doctor and/or podiatrist as soon as possible. Early treatment is the best Continue reading >>

All opinions are mine alone. #RewardHealthyChoices #CollectiveBias Its really hard for me to admit this, but I spent my life making all the wrong choices when it came to my health. I ate whatever I wanted and not in moderation, I was lazy and hated exercise and I would never drink water at all. Other than being fat, I never really had to deal with any consequences of my actions so I guess I figured that nothing would happen to me. Last year, I finally said enough! I started to eat a little better and I got up and exercised a bit, but I couldnt kick the soda habit or even my smoking habit. I did feel a little better most of the time, but I knew it wasnt enough and I didnt do anything to change that. That is until January of this year when I started to have diabetic symptoms. While I waited for a snag in the insurance coverage to clear up, I immediately quit soda, started drinking water all the time and started eating even better than I was before, just hoping that I was imagining the symptoms. No such luck at all because on March24 I received the diagnoses that I was dreading for 2 months, I am a diabetic. I hadnt had soda in 2 months and didnt even miss it, but I knew I need to cut way back on carbs if I wanted to get my numbers under control and I did exactly that. In May, the doctor took me of diabetes medications and in June, I had my sugars tested again and they were almost normal! While I am doing really well with my sugar levels, one thing that I am not doing well with is my feet. My sug Continue reading >>

There are many toenail disorders that affect the patient with diabetes. However, by far, the most common condition is onychomycosis; the medical term for fungus toenails. This is often the presenting problem of the patient with diabetes. The nails are often too difficult to manage for the patient. Furthermore, a patient is at risk for self-injury trying to treat these on their own. Please let your podiatrist manage the problem. Most insurance plans encourage and cover this treatment every 61 days. Treatment ranges from professional debridement to medications to treat the problem. As far as medications, topical medicines are poor at best. I tell my patients they are usually safe but generally ineffective. What works best in my experience is oral medications. I start with Lamisil (terbinafine) if the patient is medically able to take it. However, I give a mini/pulse dose, and not the 90 day course. I have found this to be 70% to 80 % as effective as the full dose. Blood work is usually not necessary. Either way, this is a well-tolerated and safe medication, especially when given in an abbreviated form. Talk to your podiatrist or internist to see if you are a candidate . Continue reading >>
